User Petition to Make Waldorf Kyra Open Source

This one is in via Sérgio.

You can find the petition here.

Details via Fabio Montarsolo:

"Waldorf acquired the valkyrie project from Mr. Manuel Caballero back in 2018. After a quick cosmetic change, they put it into the market with the name Kyra.

Despite strong requests from the community of users, they did not release any significant firmware update. Now in 2023 they declared no further firmware update is to be expected.
The valkyrie/kyra is an FPGA implementation, so in practice it is a software designed synth, with much lower limits of hardware ones.

We as kyra users asks Waldorf to release the code of kyra firmware into open source in order for the community to take over their unfinished work."

Note the Kyra was initially the Exodus Digital Valyrie as pictured. It was picked up and rebadged as the Kyra by Waldorf.

  1. Hey I'm just hoping for 49 or 61key versions that's all I want

  2. If they've said no firmware updates, it sounds like maybe they parted ways with Manuel Caballero after the acquisition? I have considered a Kyra a few times in the past, but I have to say this lack of support makes me question investing time or money in any Waldorf products

    1. I'm not quite so concerned usually about lack of support, but with a synth that has v1.0 software, it IS a concern, as so much gets fixed in any modern synth after release. But the bigger obstacle to me is the total lack of a selection encoder. Just can't figure out what Waldorf were thinking when they designed it. A re-release with a much improved user interface would sell like hot cakes I reckon, as there's little to compete with it for sound or multi-timbrality that is still made. Such a huge wasted opportunity.

  3. I read this blurb while racking my brain over what 'pertition' means. Partition? No. Petition. Now, I am just annoyed. The one saving grace is that I never spent money on a Kyra. To blazes with everyone at this point.

  4. The Kyra is a great synth! Underrated and has had a troubled life. At its current price where will you get a multitimbral synth? Unfortunately Waldorf had no support plan after it's release and I believe the firmware is still owned by the designer. So Waldorf just does not have the power to make it open source.
