About 12,000 units were manufactured during that time, and while the TR-808 was popularized by progressive artists such as YMO, its sales during those two years were not what one would call a success. It would be several years later that they would be appreciated.
In the late 1980s, a group of forward-thinking creators discovered the untapped potential of the TR-808, and it would change the music scene forever. The 808 sound is used in many new musical genres. The sound of searing hi-hats, snappy snares, ticking rimshots, distinctive cowbells, and floor-splitting kicks can still be heard decades later in hits and legendary underground tunes around the world. And it continues to this day.
It has a "step recording" function for easy typing (it's a so-called step sequencer), and while its sound is not the same as a real drum, it's still the same low bass drum, the handclaps that have become a standard sound, and the apple-penned that song that took YouTube by storm. It is the one and only sound that has changed the music scene and is still loved by many.
There are a variety of 808 sounds available, such as sampling, software sources, clone machines, etc., but the real sound can only be reproduced on the original machine.
Please come and experience the kick of the 808 with a bass so heavy it will send your speakers flying.
