Generative Patches: Behringer Edge+Crave+Spice Live Jam Demo

video upload by Anton Anru

"πŸŸͺ🟧πŸŸ₯ ECS Generative is a collection of 25 patches (+Crave patterns) for the semi-modular system by Behringer: EDGE + CRAVE + SPICE.
This genre of sound design is highly popular within modular culture, and the Behringer synths offer an excellent feature set to explore it.
Controlled chaos and randomness, probability, non-repetitiveness, tempo shifts, pattern uniqueness, the alternation of short and long sounds, unexpected changes, silence and density, harmonic and FX-like tones, and glitchy bursts throughout sequences — all of these elements are part of the soundset.

Generative timbres can serve as a strong addition to, or the main element of, ambient or techno tracks, jams, and performances. You can also record fragments into your DAW or sampler, slice them into one-shots or loops, and obtain unique material for further processing.

πŸŽ› The main focus of the soundset is the high level of interconnection — not just syncing the synths with independent timbres (individual soundsets for EDGE, CRAVE, and SPICE are also available on my website). In this patchbook, the timbres of the synths are fused together and cannot exist separately:
πŸ”Ή they modulate each other with LFOs and Envelopes
πŸ”Ή a sequence from one synth may control parameters on the others
πŸ”Ή trigger interaction, clock/rhythm, and run/stop modulations break predictable patterns
πŸ”Ή audio signals from VCOs may serve as modulation sources, creating harmonies/intervals or wild experimental inharmonic tones
πŸ”Ή or they can be routed as audio into another synth to be processed by its filter and envelope, giving the sound a “second life.”

πŸ“» EDGE, CRAVE, and SPICE take on different, well-defined roles. The result is not a sound mess, but synths working in close cooperation.

πŸ“– The soundset comes in a PDF format. Each page contains notes explaining how the patch works, which parameters are worth tweaking during playback, and how to develop the timbre in performance. If you make the settings consciously and try the techniques described, you will discover the true depth of these instruments.

🧿To recreate these patches, you’ll need up to 20 patch cables.
The Crave pattern titles include the key in which they are saved. You can transpose them using the keyboard on the front panel of the Crave.

🎧 Audio examples for all patches are included in the soundset folder, presented in four versions: EDGE only, CRAVE only, SPICE only, and all together.

πŸ’‘ I added pads to the video demo to place the presets in a musical context.
These pads are not included in the soundset."
