"In this video, I’m taking a look at what has happened to melon since my last video. My 4HP Eurorack adaption of Hagiwo’s amazing RP2350-based MOD2 has grown quite a bit since then, with new panels, new firmware, community contributions, and improvements to the overall infrastructure.
🍉 Melon is all about flexibility. Depending on the firmware, the same hardware can be a kick drum, hi-hat, FM voice, sampler, drum machine, experimental effects processor, or even run full oscillator engines like Mutable Braids.
🎨 Since the last video, I’ve created 6 different panels for the various firmwares, with more planned for the future.
🔇 I also managed to track down and fix an annoying whining noise that affected some firmwares by lowering the PWM carrier frequency to 96 kHz. Melon is now completely silent and ready for live performances — and two artists have already taken a melon on stage!
🌐 The browser-based firmware flasher is still making it incredibly easy to try out different firmwares. It now automatically pulls the latest UF2 files directly from GitHub, where the firmwares are automatically built using GitHub Actions.
🔧 Existing firmwares have also received some great updates:
the Radio firmware now features speed control during sample playback
the Braids firmware now includes a drone mode
attack and release parameters can now be adjusted through a new settings page
🎧 And of course, the melon ecosystem has grown massively with a whole range of new firmwares:
🥁 Metal Hit by Hagiwo
🎲 RALPS — a Random Algorithmic Looping Percussion Synthesizer by mxzr, featuring 16 different sound engines and controlled randomness for evolving rhythmic structures.
🎸 Reese Bass by Effiksmusic, using three detuned sawtooth oscillators and a slow LFO to create a classic living, chorused Reese bass sound.
🥁 Drums by Vincent Maurer — a seriously feature-packed 15-kit, 3-voice drum machine with its own multi-effects section and a sequencer inspired by Mutable Instruments Grids.
🌀 fxloperformer by mxzr — an experimental effects processor that pushes the RP2350 to its limits by processing external audio through the effects section of the Drums firmware.
Huge thanks to Hagiwo for the original MOD2 design and all the open-source work that made melon possible, and to everyone who has contributed new firmwares, improvements, ports, and infrastructure to the project.
This is exactly why I love open source hardware and software — a small project can grow into something much bigger when other people start building on top of it."

"In this video, I’m taking a closer look at melon, a Eurorack module I’ve been working on over the last couple of weeks. It’s based on the amazing MOD2 by Hagiwo, built around the RP2350 microcontroller — but with a few tweaks and improvements to better fit into a Eurorack workflow.
🍉 Melon is all about flexibility.
Depending on the firmware, it can be a sampler, FM drum module, hi-hat, or even run full oscillator engines like Mutable Braids — all on the same hardware.
🔧 Compared to the original design, I added:
a 5V regulator for standard Eurorack power (2x5 header)
support for a WS2812B RGB LED for improved visual feedback
a dual LED footprint (RGB or classic 3mm THT)
a symmetrical layout allowing for flippable panels
🌐 Flashing firmware is super easy:
I implemented a browser-based flasher on my website — just connect via USB-C, open Chrome or Edge, pick a firmware, and you’re ready to go in under a minute.
