Groovetube - testing production machines

video upload by Telmatronics

"A longer clip, seeing what different sounds a Fusion brand tube can make.

With the first batch of machines now built up, it’s time to get the run code and EQ settings finalised. The sub had to be cut a bit here, otherwise the sound is as recorded from line out. WAV audio version available at: telmatronics.co.uk/groovetube-release-info/

Also been trying out more fluorescents - they vary wildly, it's pot luck how a given tube will sound. This one makes a very harsh noise that responds well to a magnet, though it also makes some popping at high modulation/low drive, where the plasma momentarily disconnects.

Fresh tubes definitely sound crazier, though a strong magnet can stabilise the noise in most cases. And after running for some hours, fluorescents calm down and become less noisy.

For me the most interesting sounds occur around the edge of noisy, where the response is less predictable and small changes in magnet position have a large effect."
