Lifeforms SV-2 from Pittsburgh Modular is a duophonic analog semi-modular keyboard synthesizer that honors classic East Coast subtractive architecture while packing a punch of flavorful twists afforded by modern technology. A full-blown revamp of the SV-1, it features updates to nearly every aspect of the instrument: new oscillator core, classic PGH filters updated with new character modes and overdrive stages, new spring reverb, new response curves and range modes on the ADSR envelopes, a custom 37-key keyboard with pitch-bend and mod wheels, and a redesigned interface with eighty-four patch points along the top. Moreover, a 24hp Eurorack expansion bay with three power headers sits alongside them, so external modules of your choosing can be dropped into the signal path at any point.

The two thru-zero triangle-core oscillators offer a wide range of timbres on top of the standard quartet of Saw, Sine, Triangle, and Pulse, including Blade, Random, and Pulse Symmetry waveforms, plus thru-zero and linear FM, phase modulation, and hard sync. Additionally, there are dedicated white-noise and square-wave sub-oscillator outputs, one and two octaves below the main waveform, which can be mixed in for a fatter and richer sound. A pair of voltage-controlled LFOs extend the tone-shaping possibilities further with selectable Saw, Triangle, and Square waveforms, linear FM, reset, and a range switch which can alternate between slow and audio-rate modulation—push them into the upper range and they double as a third and fourth audio oscillator.

The classic Pittsburgh multi-mode filters offer Highpass, Bandpass, Lowpass, Combo, and Random filter responses, as well as new character modes. Warped changes the waveform shape without altering its harmonic content, while Warped and Rectified mode halves the warped waveform and rebuilds it from what remains, causing different results depending on the incoming wave—sine morphs to double-frequency sine, triangle to double-frequency triangle, saw transitions to triangle, and there is a range of responses on varied symmetry pulse. Altogether, SV-2 provides a vast foundation of sonic flavors for uncompromising flexibility in analog sound design.

Then there is the drive, and it's not just a single knob amplifying the signal at the end of the chain, but rather six saturation and overdrive stages dispersed throughout the signal path, allowing for precise invocation of analog grit—from subtle to extreme as your heart desires. Twin switchable saturation points on the dual mixer add warmth and mild compression to the waveforms, a pair of pre-filter overdrive stages each boost the signal up to fivefold, and the variable preamp section offers up to thirtyfold amplification. Lastly, the saturation circuit in the spring reverb adds some vintage heat. Collectively this sums into an unmistakably true analog tone.

There is also quite a bit to say about the control structure of the SV-2. The instrument can be set into monophonic, one-button paraphonic, and full duophonic voicing modes, providing a flexible range of playing modes. The built-in complex arpeggiator, on top of the premium-feel keyboard, adds extended performance options. The digital modulation tool provides tactile control over a clock-syncable LFO, a decay envelope, and a random level source. USB and 5-pin MIDI I/O further expand the instrument's potential to integrate into a variety of set-ups.

Although Pittsburgh's SV-2 is a true homage to vintage East Coast charm, it is much less about looking into the past, and more about imagining new futures for analog synthesis.
