"Side-Piece is out: a free custom OS layer for the Roland SP-404MKII. It sits on top of Roland's own system 5.52 and adds what we wish the sampler had. Open beta 0.1.0, free for everyone.

WHAT'S IN IT
• FX screen on SHIFT + PATTERN EDIT
• FX stacks: four slots on BUS 1 to 4 and DRY (filter, lo-fi, EQ, chorus, phaser, delay, transient shaper)
• Stacks on a pad, latched or held
• Four LFOs, including PRESS, CHAOS and LORENZ
• Euclidean lanes over your patterns
• EQ per bus with pick-up knobs
• Frequency chop into four bands
• Smoother time-stretch with tempo and pitch override
• Ducker and tempo pump, input level
• Main-screen views, including the PSY1 visualizer
• CPU guard instead of dropouts
• Your own opening pictures from the SD card

HOW IT WORKS
The patcher builds Side-Piece in your browser from your own copy of Roland's system update 5.52. Your file is never uploaded, and we never host firmware. Copy the new SP404MKII_APP1.bin to the SD card, hold SHIFT while switching on, press VALUE. Never put SP404MKII_APP0.bin on the card.
