A melodic and ambient performance, live with a eurorack case.

Fair warning: Play All Day sent the PlayFader over for free for me to try. There was no explicit discussion of a deal beyond that. Take that as you will. I will say that it's an extremely nice-feeling piece of gear, much heavier and sturdier than I'd expected. Its idea is quite limited—just two mono sequencers, and limited to 64 steps (though you can set it to unusual step counts)—but I can imagine it as a fun controller to complement a setup with a more traditional sequencer. For me, its use will be limited, as I tend to like unusual sequence lengths for the mono synths over top of standard sequences. But I like the feel of the hardware so much that I'm looking for more excuses to use it.

Beyond that, this was an excuse to put together a case with a lot of sound-shaping potential. Vhikk X was doing bass drone, Eowave Domino was the melody / lead synth, and Rample Turbo was playing some samples that I think were kalimba. But the Qu-Bit modules—Stardust for a separate tape reel, Nautilus on delay for Domino, and Mojave on granular for the Rample Turbo—radically transformed the sound. Those Qu-Bit modules are really growing on me: each unit does way more than you'd expect, with Stardust having filter/tape effects/reverb/bitcrushing/glitch, Nautilus having delay/reverb/saturation, and Mojave having granular/reverb; and each unit is decently sized so that they're easy to play.

Altogether this created a sort of sonic landscape that I couldn't have achieved through exploration in another setup. That's the joy of eurorack.

Thanks for listening.

Performed and recorded live, with EQ, compression, and limiting on the master.
