"Muson Toy Synthesizer Mego Corp 1978. Condition is "Used".

Used by Devo and recently circuit-bent by Simon the Magpie, Muson Synthesizer is one of the rarest toys/musical instruments around.

Ten keys, speed and pitch controls, and a sequencer with 9 of the tab widgets for programming notes in sequence. 1-4, 1-6, 1-8, and 1-10 phrase lengths."

MUSON SYNTHESIZER Custom Knob Hack

We Hacked A $500 VINTAGE TOY SYNTHESIZER Simon The Magpie

"With some help from my good buddy JW OTTO I finally hacked the MUSON SYNTHESIZER! No bending = super safe diy. It’sstill a pain to use.. but a cooler pain now (insertcoolemoji)"

So that's how the Muson works. Interesting hack. The colored "switches" or rather patch points have different levels of resistance to alter the pitch and sequence. So why not make replacement switches with knobs/potentiometers to attenuate the connection?

via this auction

"Fully functional vintage 1978 Mego Corp Muson Synthesizer, with original box.
All the sequencer pegs/pins are included and has no battery leaking inside of the battery slot.
Everything is in working condition, the box is in fairly good condition for its age but still has seen better days, as well as the label on the front of the synth which has slightly discoloured from age.
[As seen in the pictures]

This is a really rare and sort after toy synthesizer which is capable of making some pretty incredible experimental video game/arcade, robotic, spacey sounds.
The internet description going around for this thing says: ''Kind of a ROLAND TB-303 but much cooler & cheaper - still cheaper...''

The box says:
"The sound of music. An electronic and music synthesizer. You can play a tune or make the strangest sounds in the galaxy.

Play dozens of simple tunes on the piano-type keyboard. Or make strange and spacey rhythms on the color-coded electronic board. Play them together for Rock 'N Roll sounds, eerie sounds, or outerspace electronic music. Separate slide levers, change the pitch and tempo. Experiment with thousands of combinations of sound. "

Description:
The coloured buttons can be used to change the melody and rhythm. Each color has a different note.
The speed and pitch of the sequence can be changed with sliders on either side of keyboard.

The keys play just over an octave of whole notes.
A unique vintage music toy from 1978.
Requires 4 - C batteries that are not included (placement of batteries go under the 'Muson' cover on top of the machine."

Note the bottom pic is the more common pic. Can't be the lighting can it?

"This is a vintage (1978) Muson Synthesizer toy. It works, but the switches and dials are a little bit scratchy, so the internal electrical connectors will likely need to be cleaned. Some of the colored selector pins are missing, and the purple one does't work, but the rest do. The labels show some slight moisture damage. The box and manual are not included."

Some pics of the plugs pulled below.

"Up for sale is a Vintage 1978 Muson Synthesizer by Mego Corp. in the Original Box. This is such a fun vintage electronic synthesizer that is still used in studios today that allows you to create endless sounds & rhythms or play simple tunes on the piano type keyboard. This is in great working condition and has been well tested. The unit itself is very clean and shows minimal to no signs of use. The decals are intact & vibrant in color on the battery compartment and along the top of the keys. There is some discoloration from the vintage adhesive (see pictures). All 10 colorful plugs are present including the 'black C plug' which is necessary to have to be sure the synthesizer generates the proper sounds before each use. There is a manual that was found in the box, it looks to me like a photo copy from years ago as this unit is colorful and I would think the manual would reflect the same. It explains your steps in using this synthesizer and the different functions it is capable of doing. This can make some really neat old school sounds from arcades, robots and space sounds. I understand why there are so few that come up for sale as this piece is a timeless treasure and is still used in studios today and it makes a nice curiosity display piece! This comes in the original box with one Styrofoam insert to hold it in place. The box shows some storage wear and some taping on the bottom and is missing some of the side art from possible tape removal. This requires 4 C batteries not included."

Vintage Mego Muson Synthesizer Analog Toy Mini Synth Organ SN 27041

"The bottom white keys are for the normal organ section. They are like the white keys on a keyboard with no sharps for flats. The fun part is the sequencer section. The color pegs are different notes. If you take the pegs out and plug them in you can make various sequences. The two sliders on each side control the speed and the pitch of the sequence. It can go so incredibly fast and high pitched. The only thing I can describe the sound to is Pac-Man.

Some cool things about the Muson Synthesizer..
You can see it in Devo's 'My Baby Gave Me A Suprise' video. Also, it was used in some early recordings by the synth-punk band Crash Course In Science..."

Rare Modded 1970s Mego Muson Synthesizer with Original Box SN 00357

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
via this auction

"This is an auction for a rare Mego Muson synthesizer from the 1970s. It is in working condition with original box. I modified this unit several years ago by adding a small volume pot on the side and a 1/4" jack on the back to facilitate better recording of this unit (see photo). When a cord is plugged into the back the speaker is bypassed and the pot scales the output volume. When there is no cord plugged in the sound comes out the speaker and the pot scales the volume.

The unit is in really good shape as you can see in the photos. There is some slight curling on the very edges of the stickers and the foam in the battery compartment is no longer spongy and is a little browned. I have a little folded piece of paper towel in there that I put over the batteries to keep them snug in the compartment like the foam used to.

Also included is a non-original black hard case that works perfectly for transporting the unit (see photo). I will ship the Muson inside the black case with that inside a cardboard box with appropriate padding. The original box I will flatten and put in that same cardboard box. The original box is in ok shape but there is some discoloring and one of the inside flaps has come off completely (see photos).

The serial number sticker fell off but it will be included in this auction (see photo - it used to be on the bottom of the unit)..."
