New Uses for Old Circuits 01: Slew Generators as Lowpass Gates
video upload by La Synthèse Humaine
"New Uses for Old Circuits is a series looking at linear and nonlinear processes in the modular system.
In this video we start from the basics and look at the two most famous modules of the Serge system: the Dual Universal Slope Generator (DUSG) and Smooth/Stepped Generator (SSG). These two flavors of slew generator allow us to not only create modulation sources but process audio signals, acting as low level lowpass filters."

Random Source SERGE INORI + TKB // DAY 14 #jamuary2026
video upload by Dexba
"This feels so wrong – but why? 😄
A sprinkle of acid with my Serge INORI, using 8 steps only from the TKB, lane A for pitch, lane B for glide, lane C for filter modulation (and lane D was for pitch transpose, but that was a bit harder to master in a quick jam, so I ended up leaving it out).
One oscillator provides the bass, the other one the kick, you know the drill.
So much fun, I hope you'll enjoy it! 🧡"

Patch Memory Performance #3 | Modular synth terrace jam with 4MS SMR and R*S Triple Waveshaper
video upload by djr brunstein
"Patch Memory Performance.
A modular synthesiser performance recorded on my terrace in Porto, built around the 4MS Spectral Multiband Resonator and the Serge Random Source Triple Waveshaper [with Play all Day's PlayFader].
This patch became something to play rather than explain, with dense cross modulation and unstable feedback paths.
Watch the companion video looking at the underlying patch structure here:"

video upload by djr brunstein
"Another patch exploration video, this time focusing on chaotic cross modulation between the 4MS Spectral Multiband Resonator and the Serge Random Source Triple Waveshaper.
This is a short overview of the patch logic rather than a full performance or a repeatable recipe. The sounds are unstable by design and difficult to reproduce exactly.

Everything Oscillates: A closer look at the Serge Random Source Helios & Paris Flash
video upload by Bleeps and Boops
"Following up on Part 1 - • From DIY to Cult Legend: The Serge Synthes... [posted here] - here's a closer look at two of the R*S Serge 50th Anniversary Paperface panels. If you've not seen the first part yet, please do since it gives a decent background on where these came from. Any corrections or questions, please comment below: I've tried my best but there's always going to be an omission or mistake.
All the background music was made on the Serge - if I get the chance I'll upload it somewhere. It's genuinely the most productive six weeks I've ever had with one synth.
These new versions are a re-work in collaboration with Serge himself, to update and improve his original Paperface circuits. As such the oscillators track nicely over the full range, everything is stable, and overall it's better suited to life in a modern studio.
As before, an enormous thanks to @serge-modular for the loan of this beast.
Time to start saving I think...
As ever, thanks for watching!"

Serge’s 1979 ÷NCOM - It Compares, Counts, Waits, Fires and It Always Rises
video upload by Cinematic Laboratory
"I bought the #Serge #NCOM in the blind because a) it's the work of a living legend, b) I had no idea what it did, and c) after reading the manual and looking on YouTube I still had no idea how to use it in real life music.
The ÷NCOM is short for pulse divider (by N steps), a comparator (gate goes high where +IN is higher than -IN) and last but not least, a staircase CV is raised one semitone when the compare goes high and the max steps N is not reached. So now you know, and just like me, it still remains a mystery how it can play a role in modular music.
÷NCOM is from 1979, and quantized CV was rare, especially when it's derived from any two compared voltages. It's using two CMOS chips, but only 5 of 8 bits were used (step 0 to 31 = 32 values). So is it early digital? Yes, but without a CPU or code and state of the art precision - for 1979. Is it still relevant in 2025? I am not sure how many voltage comparators are around in eurorack, and you probably never needed one. A staircase CV waveform is simply a matter of running a ramp through a quantizer, and you may be able to use an END of RAMP event on a Maths clone. The ÷NCOM circuit is often used for rhythmic patches, and the staircase is super useful to make synchronized ramps you can use to open a filter or wavefolder. Not to mention arpeggios. It's the opposite of high-tech, it's low tech. A circuit you need to learn, discover and find use for. It was special in 1979, and today it's part of the joy of owning a true Serge module that can always do more than you think."

Serge Modular - New Frequency Shifter Sound Impressions
video upload by Serge Modular | Random*Source
"The New Frequency Shifter (FRS) is a completely new design by Serge, much improved over the original 1979 version. Actually it is a combination of two new Quadrature (sine) Oscillators plus two (!) Frequency Shifters, offering 5 different modes from separate use to true Stereo Processing.

Serge New Gates - Complex Sounds
video upload by Serge Modular | Random*Source
"The new generation of the Serge Gates from 1973 was (re)designed by Serge himself in 2022 and is now available for eurorack (in combination with the equally new VCFX filter). Originally intended as a VCA with selectable characteristics, the new version adds ring modulation. However, since the other 2 CV inputs can be used at the same time (with varying results depending on the mode and knob settings), the New Gates are an invitation to be (able to)used to mangle different waveforms - this videos aims to give an idea of what that can sound like.
Modules used: Serge GTS, NTO, Extended ADSR (handling keyboard input from Microfreak in some patches), additional GTO in some."

It's all Voltage | The Modular Classroom | Lesson 1 (feat. Serge DUSG and GTS)
video upload by Cinematic Laboratory
"OK, here's episode 1 of my modular classroom series. Again. I had to reupload due to editing errors. So I worked on it some more, added some stuff and removed a segment that went to Lesson 2.
I had to pick a reference because we all own different case layouts. I assume everyone can follow and try some of it if you own a Maths, Falistri, Rampage or Abacus. I'll be using Serge DUSG and GTS for most of this video. I did not include the 281T quad function generator because it will get its own lesson.
We're going to be taking about rise and falls a lot. They're the foundation for modular sound generation and movement. It's all voltage. When we think of a triangle wave as a basic waveform, we can break it apart and see it as a rising voltage, a falling voltage in a repeating cycle over periods of time. Time will determine if it's a VCO or LFO."
Slope Language | The Modular Classroom | Lesson 2 (feat. Maths, Rings and Clouds)
video upload by Cinematic Laboratory
"In Lesson 1 I introduced a hidden sonic world of rise and falls, a foundation for making sounds and movement and for interaction with other sounds and movements. I realized it's hard to make lessons without reference gear and I picked Maths as the No. 1 module to explain the core concepts of low level synthesis. While making this lesson, I figured out this 'slope language' which could be an alternative to patch diagrams. Diagrams only work on a system with a fixed layout and modules. In modular this just doesn't work because all modulars are different and personal.
I also needed to find a way to combine high level music making with low level modular techniques and explain why it's worth it to dive a bit deeper. I used Rings and Clouds as a methaphor for 'fastfood' because it's really easy to make great music. This often sounds like a bad thing but it's not. Too easy is good. It confirms that modular synths can be cool. But it's even cooler to hear what happens when we add a bit of low level movement. Sticking to the metaphor of cooking with sound, it becomes a Chef's kitchen, where Rings/Clouds are the signature ingredients, and Maths is the secret sauce.
The goal for these classes is to learn how to think in voltage slopes (rise and falls) and these 'slope language' diagrams seem to work for lots of module combinations. I was able to 'translate' a Maths patch to Tides and Blinds. It works because we're taking a step back from the panel layout, and focus on what the voltage is doing. The recipe. For me, it felt like a missing link that really helps me to explain things. Now let's hope this works for you too."
