I got to spend some quality time with the Hexdrums - it sounds really beefy and each voice has a tonne of sweet spots. The Hexdrums has loads of saturation available, is built to a high standard and feels very performative. This is the first of four videos.

The formidable Perkons HD-01 was available at Machina Bristronica - how could I resist? For my money the Perkons is the most 'jammable' and gratifying drum machine on the market, hands-down. The person using it before filming this session was dancing and really enjoying their time with it. Was a joy to witness!

The excellent DR-2 drum machine from Modor aka Marcel Belmans. Was a treat to finally meet Marcel and discuss his creations. In this video Marcel kindly demonstrated the DR-2 for us.

Over 300 one-shot samples, 20 loops, nine sample chains and a bespoke Ableton Live instrument rack - this is my love-letter to the Erica Synths x Hexinverter HexDrums!

The HexDrums is a modern hybrid analogue drum machine released by Latvian powerhouse Erica Synths - the analogue circuits are derived from the Mutant Drums eurorack modules created by Canadian sonic maestros Hexinverter, while Erica Synths provided a version of their digital Cymbals module for maximum sonic flexibility.

The HexDrums is a punchy and performative drum machine, representing a vintage soul with modern trimmings. This pack is my attempt to squeeze every last drop of variety from each voice, allowing a sampler to act as a more flexible and economical doppelgänger for the hardware.

One-Shots (304):
Recorded through high-quality preamps and encoded in 24-bit 48kHz, these individually-crafted and diverse sounds push the entire sonic potential of the device, grouped by voice type into folders:

Bass Drum 1 (BD1)
Bass Drum 2 (BD2)
Machine (MC)
Snare Drum (SD)
Clap (CP)
Hi-Hats (HH)
Rimshot (RS)
Clave (CL)
Crash (CR)
Ride Cymbal (RC)

Loops (20):
A selection of click-free loops carefully recorded from the hardware through high-quality preamps, and encoded in 24-bit 48kHz and organised by BPM.

Sample Chains (9):
All one-shot samples of each type contained within separate files and equally-spaced designed to efficiently work as a single ‘track’ of any sampler with a slice function but with the Elektron Octatrack in mind (16-bit 44.1kHz). Octatrack users can simply transfer each chain and corresponding (.ot) data file onto their CF cards for instant pre-sliced results.

Ableton Live Selector Kit (designed with Ableton Live 12 Suite):
Designed to capture the analogue heart of the machine, this Ableton Live project houses a custom drum rack containing all the variants of the one-shots from each kit type, selectable with a macro knob and set to cycle through the different samples of each sound type, as well as individual voice settings, presets for each voice and overall kit settings including compression and EQ.

Audio Formats:
Sample Chains: 16-Bit // 44.1kHz WAV
Everything Else: 24-Bit // 48kHz WAV

This pack aims to capture every nook and cranny of this device - each individual sound recorded with attention-to-detail and organised in a logical fashion. Enjoy!"

"My Hexdrums arrived a couple of days ago, and it's been great to get to know it away from the hustle and bustle of Machina Bristronica!

In this video you will hear two custom samples on the Crash and Ride (Cymbals) channel - an open hat and a clap. I find adding custom samples to this device really helps it cut through, and works great when layering them with the internal voices.

"A slightly dirtier HexDrums workout today, this time with the Master drive gain all the way down but at 100% for a slight definition boost. I think this is my favourite setting. Definitely makes things sound hairier without going into mangled territory.

Apologies for when my head gets in the way of the camera - will attempt to stay further back in the future. :)
