ako - Basic Microwaving (4 track tape version) - recording w MT-50, MMT-8, CZ-1000, PSS-480, TR505

video upload by ako

"Here's a video of the recording of the B-side for my new single (links to all formats below). It was recorded on a Yamaha MT-50 four track tape recorder with a Casio CZ-1000 (bass, this is honestly the weirdest synth I own and I think this the only track I’ve released with it on bc it’s just so weird), Yamaha PSS-480 (lead, despite masquerading as toy this thing packs some serious heat) Yamaha DX21 (chord layer) and Roland TR505 (drums – this gets some stick from TR purists, but it has some really usable sounds and the sequencer is super nice). The track was sequenced with the frankly legendary Alesis MMT-8 (the only hardware MIDI sequencer I’ve ever enjoyed using). Synchronisation between tape and MIDI was achieved using a Yamaha YMC10 MIDI clock to tape-synch converter. Dub style delays used on the lead came from a RocLab DD3000 (pretty obscure unit, sounds nice if you tweak it just right); Reverb came from a Behringer DR600 (solid reverb pedal, even more solid price at ~£25) and chorus for the bass via a Boss CH-1 Super Chorus - my favourite chorus, to me it just sounds how chorus should sound (this one is a vintage ‘made in Japan’ model, so fully analogue compared to later digital CH-1 models, and just sounds super warm). It was mixed on MT-50 but also with a Peavey Unity Series 2000-16 (for submixes and sends etc.), this mixer has a flavour all of it’s own, certainly not high fidelity, but kinda gritty and warm… The track is out now for stream and download (links below), hope you folks dig the track 🙂"

ako - Home3D (four track tape version) - recording w/ a Yamaha MT-50 tape recorder, DX21 & RX5

video upload by ako

"Here's a video of the recording of the A-side for my new single (links to all formats below). It was was recorded on an Yamaha MT-50 four track tape recorder (a solidly underrated recorder, with an advantage over various more popular Portastudio models in that you can record on all 4 tracks simultaneously, rather than just 2 at once) with a Yamaha DX21 (bass, chords and FX), Novation Ultranova (additional chord layers) and Yamaha RX5 (drums). Synchronisation between tape (which had the chord layers bounced down to 2 tracks to free up tracks) and MIDI used to sequence the bass and drums was achieved using a Yamaha YMC10 MIDI clock to tape-synch converter (solid little converter). Reverb was provided by an Alesis MIDIverb II (an FX unit that needs no introduction) and chorus for the bass via a Boss CH-1 Super Chorus - my favourite chorus, to me it just sounds how chorus should sound (this particular one is a vintage ‘made in Japan’ model, so fully analogue compared to later digital CH-1 models, and just sounds super warm). It was mixed on MT-50 but also with a venerable Peavey Unity Series 2000-16 (for submixes and sends etc.), this mixer has a flavour all of it’s own, certainly not high fidelity, but kinda gritty and warm and just kinda ‘Peavey’… The track is out now for stream and download, hope you folks dig the track 🙂

ako - Home3D (four track tape version) [vaporwave / synthfunk / utopian virtual]

video upload by ako

"Taken from my new single - previously unreleased versions of ‘Home3D’ and ‘Basic Microwaving’ recorded on four track tape (FFO: Eyeliner, FM Skyline, Rustie). Out now on Spotify, BandCamp, YouTube and all other digital platforms, all formats here: https://linktr.ee/simeonsoden

This track (the A-side) was recorded on an Yamaha MT-50 four track with DX21 (bass, chords and FX), RX5 (drums) and some bits and pieces from a Novation Ultranova.

I made the video by retexturing the classic win95-98 '3D Maze.scr' screen saver with archetypal win98 desktop wallpapers to create the sensation of the desktop opening as a portal to virtual worlds beyond. Re-filmed from various CRTs and projectors. Hope you folks enjoy :)"

FAT Freebass FB383 analogue synth tutorial, review, sound demos: is this a good Roland TB-303 clone?

video upload by ako

"I've been really liking the FAT Freebass FB383 analogue TB303 clone again (even if staying in tune is more of an aspiration than guarantee with this thing). It’s fully analogue and the filter does all the good self oscillating squelchy things you want from a 303 even if it does lack a sequencer (slides and accents can be triggered with MIDI). Some sources claim it's a fairly faithful clone of a TB-303, not sure how valid that is though. For those outside the UK wondering, this synth is just a MAM MB33 with a different paint job. You can also feed audio into this synth and use it as a MIDI triggered enveloped / gated filter, which is kinda cool! Had this set up recently for some acid parts (ofc) and it’s been fun using this synth again so I thought I'd make a video on it - hope you enjoy :)

Chapters:
00:00 - review, background info and basic features (incl. how it differs from a "real" 303 and other clones)
07:58 - Programming sounds (pt1. VCO and tuning)
10:20 - Programming sounds (pt2. filter and envelope)
12:24 - Programming sounds (pt3. Accent and slide)
15:47 - Programming sounds (pt4. Using the filter's external audio input)
21:07 - Sound demo 1 - the synth in a track with no effects on it
23:02 - Sound demo 2 - the synth used in a track through an overdrive pedal

Sound demo 2 is a verison of my 'MYST.wave II Unfinale':

EMS Synthi AKS analogue modular synthesizer jam / demo (dank techno vibes on an original 70's AKS)

video upload by ako

"My first jams with the original 70's EMS Synthi AKS modular synth at work at the Keele University music production studios, or rather 13mins of the best bits edited from footage of my first couple of hours jamming with this monster. After the 'satanic dub siren' patch I made, I noticed the keyboard pitch control used the same points on the patch matrix as the external audio inputs, this gave me the idea to see if it would track the pitch / follow external audio. I tested this with a Yamaha MU15 and then by sending some drums into the audio inputs from Ableton Live. I really like heavily processed percussion and I ended up jamming with this idea for an hour or so with various different drum patterns (which makes up most of this video). It (unsurprisingly) worked very well with techno / gabber-esque kick and cymbal patterns. Although the kicks were actually low toms as toms seem to work the best for tiggering the oscillators (presumably because the toms have more pitched content). It also seems to mix the input audio with the synth audio (as you can clearly hear the audio of the original cymbals at various points). This all makes me wonder how the built in keyboard works, does it generate audio frequencies? Also I noticed you can fire external audio in and still use the keyboard and both will simultaneously control the oscillators. I must admit I don’t know a ton about this synth (and I couldn't really figure out the envelope generator, it seems to loop and retrigger itself – any info on synth is welcome!) but it sounds insane! Hope you folks enjoy"
