Plan B Modular: Processing control voltages through 'audio' waveshapers

Published on Jul 7, 2013 Peter Grenader·19 videos

"Incorporating processors which you may intellectually reserve for audio use only - such as waveshapers - to modify control voltage generators, in this instance the Envelope Generator which opens the Timbral Gate via the M25 waveshaper, can lead to results you may not expect, and just may like. Try it!"

New Division 6 Mr. Crotchety Eurorack Module

via Division 6

"Um... Wut? Why in tarnation does that Eurorack module have a smiley face on it?

At its heart, Mr. Crotchety is a random voltage generator. ...only it's not really random. This module has moods. I'd love to explain how to use it, but during development it's become increasingly clear that it is just going to do whatever it wants. Controls? Ha! Mr. Crotchety was having none of that nonsense, so we ended up removing them all. If you mess with it enough you can alter its disposition to some extent, which does make for some interesting live performances, but mostly you can forget about it.

This module is useful wherever you need a touch of uncertainty and cantankerousness.

Specifications:

Power supply: +/- 12 VDC (reverse-polarity protected!)
Power draw: Whatever it feels like drawing
Width: 4HP
Depth: Your face
Inputs: Nope
Outputs: Yup, there's one.
Controls: Good luck with that.

Includes:
Mr. Crotchety
Doepfer-style Power Cable
(2) M3 x 6mm Rack Screws w/ Nylon Washers

Coming November 1, 2013. Probably."

Control Voltage in Portland Featured in The Oregonian

Check out the full article online here.

"Pilgrims to Control Voltage aren't uncommon. The store is one of only a handful in the United States devoted exclusively to electronic music gear. In most cities, if you want to buy a synthesizer, a drum machine or -- bless you -- a theremin, your choices are general music stores, which typically don't have a wide electronic music selection, or online, where you can't test products before buying...

Today, Control Voltage's roomy shop is stocked with a panoply of musical gadgets. All the merchandise is set up to use and connected to headphones, inviting customers to sample the goods while sparing bystanders the cacophony. Control Voltage focuses on analog synthesizers, which have gained popularity over digital synths in recent years for their more organic sound. The store also specializes in modular synths: old-school, increasingly in-demand synthesizers made up of a case and an infinitely customizable set of 'modules.'

To a layperson, the instruments look as alien as flying-saucer consoles. To an electronic musician or a DIY type, they look like potential.

Those are Control Voltage's people. And, fortunately for Kramer and Bambina, there are a lot of them here. Portland boasts a flourishing music scene and a growing electronic community, and the city's culture encourages artistic impulses and obsession.

'In Portland, you've got to let your freak flag fly, right?" Kramer says. "People are open to expression out here. It's cool these days to be into something so much that that's the only thing you're into, as long as you're expressing yourself.'"

Benge's Twenty Systems Re-Released

via Benge's It's Full of Stars

"My 2008 album Twenty Systems has been reissued at last! So if you have been looking for it out there in the shops or online since it sold out a few years ago - well you can get it here (if you are in USA you can pre-order it here). The release is exactly the same as the original with the exception of a few minor tweaks that niggled me about the original (but the content and audio are identical). Thanks to Steve Malins, Darren at Cargo, and Paul Agar for helping to make it happen this time round!"

This is a great release and comes with a booklet filled with synth pics as you can see from some of the shots below.  Click here for a pic of the book.  Each track features only one synth.  You'll find a link to an interview with Benge on the initial release with some additional notes here.   The release transverses synths over time starting with the 1968 Moog modular and ending with 1987's Kawai K5.  This release is HIGHLY recommended for the music, the pics and audio showcasing individual synths.
