Korg Wavestate demo by James Watson

Published on Apr 8, 2020 Patchwerks Seattle

"In this video James Watson (Eightch) of Korg shows us some of the unique and legendary sounds you can find within the new Korg Wavestate. Thank you James and thank you Korg for visiting us in Seattle!

From Korg:
KORG’s legendary Wavestation introduced the world to Wave Sequencing, transforming raw samples into sounds that no-one had ever heard before. The flagship OASYS and KRONOS keyboards developed Wave Sequencing even further, expanding on its unique palette of lush, evolving pads and driving rhythms.

Now, KORG is proud to announce the next step in digital synthesis: the wavestate. Featuring the radically re-imagined Wave Sequencing 2.0, the wavestate delivers astonishing, ever-changing sounds with extensive hands-on control.

Far from a nostalgic reissue, the wavestate is designed from the ground up for a new generation of musicians, producers, and composers, taking cues from sources as diverse as modular synths, groove boxes, and algorithmic composition. The compact form-factor, with 37 full-size keys, transports easily and fits neatly into any stage, studio, or desktop setup.

Running the Landscape HC-TT through the Roland VT-4

Published on Apr 1, 2020 Patchwerks Seattle

"In this video Matthew Piecora (aka EZBOT) processes the Landscape HC-TT (human controlled tape transport) with the Roland VT-4 (voice transoformer). The results are a vocalized robot dreamscape.

From Landscape:
The HC-TT is a compact cassette manipulation device which allows you to manually play a cassette with your hands. The resulting sound can be incredibly similar to scratching a vinyl record. Sound will only be produced while your hands are turning either of the large playback knobs. By turning these knobs you are directly rotating the cassette spindles which moves the tape across the internal tape head. The knobs “play” a regular cassette forwards and backwards. There is no motor in this device, so direction and speed is left to the performer. The illuminated touch switch is a momentary mute for both the mono audio output as well as the CV/Gate outputs. The Arches and Moons touch plates allow for feedback and other strange interactions. This device does not record audio but only outputs pre-recorded audio from any cassette tape.

Order Landscape HC-TT here:
https://bit.ly/landscape_hctt

From Roland:
The VT-4 is an effect processor for the instrument inside us all—the human voice. And like the human voice, the VT-4 is easy to use, yet devastatingly effective. Whether you’re a solo electronic artist, DJ, or singer in a band, the VT-4 lets you craft and shape your own unique vocal sounds, from subtle augmentation to radical transformation. Everything is hands on, with no menu diving or programming to get in the way. Jaw-dropping effects like harmonizing, vocoding, pitch shifting, hard tuning, and more are just a push, slide, or turn away. And with its compact size and five-hour battery life, you can use the VT-4 anywhere.

Empress Zoia and Roland JU-06A: A True Romance

Published on Feb 4, 2020 Patchwerks Seattle

"In our 3rd video Mathew Piecora (aka EZBOT) explores the midi sequencing capabilities of Empress Zoia by teaming up with the Roland JU-06A. The Zoia patch used consists of 4 sequencers, a clock divider and 2 FX's modules to process the returning audio from the JU-06A.

From Empress:
"The ZOIA is basically a modular synthesizer in pedal form. Instead of being a delay effect or tremolo, the ZOIA provides the modules necessary to build a delay or tremolo from the ground up. But since you're the one building it, you can make it do whatever you want. With the ZOIA you can build your own custom effects, synthesizers, midi controllers, and virtual pedal boards. And to make life a little easier, we've created modules for all your standard guitar effects. So for instance, if you want a phaser, you can just plop down a phaser. You don't have to break out the textbooks to learn that they're built out of all-pass filters. (Of course, if you're a nerd like us, you can use the ZOIA to build them out of all-pass filters)."

http://bit.ly/empress_zoia

From Roland:
"The JU-06A is the best of the JUNO-60 and JUNO-106 in one synth. It has the continuous high-pass filter of the 106, the envelope-controllable pulse-width-modulation of the 60, and the unique filter behavior of both, instantly switchable from the front panel. The sound is indistinguishable from its vintage counterparts, even while tweaking controls or using extreme settings. And no vintage JUNO would be complete without the swirling sound of its legendary chorus, faithfully recreated, right down to the lovable (and thankfully adjustable) noise."

Korg Volca Modular: The little synth that could!

Published on Jan 27, 2020 Patchwerks Seattle

"Matthew Pieccora (aka EZBOT) demonstrates 4 basic patches that can be found on the included quick start patch guide. After the short sound demonstration enjoy an improvised jam with the Volca Modular and the Elektron Octarack!

From Korg:
A semi-modular analog synthesizer that makes modular synthesis more accessible and understandable than ever before.
Creating new sounds that don’t exist in the outside world is an unending dream which has continued since the birth of electronic musical instruments. This dream has evolved and expanded throughout the development of new and unique music production devices. The popularity of modular synthesizers around the world has generated new excitement and interest in the so-called "West Coast style" of synthesis that deviates from traditional synthesis norms. The compact body of this volca synth features eight modules and 50 patch points. While learning the basics of a modular synth, you can use popular features of the volca synthesizer line to control a unique and different flavor of analog sounds.

1. Øchd: Overview and Demo
Welcome to the Patchwerks video series! In this inaugural video of our series, our resident expert Matthew Piecora (aka EZBOT) demos the amazingly simple and musically powerful features from the new DivKid module øchd. Remember to like and subscribe, because we'll have more videos of great gear coming your way soon.

From DivKid:
This collaboration between DivKid and Instruo is a 4HP all analogue triangle LFO generator with 8 outputs. Each of the 8 outputs are free running and are musically tuned intervals, as opposed to synced or variable phase outputs from each other. A range of fast to slow outputs can be set to make any patch drift organically and beautifully, letting your modulation freely drift various parameters. There's a global rate control to go up into either lower audio rates on the fastest outputs, or glacially slow. A CV input with attenuverter allows for waveshaping via feedback patching, everything from log, lin or expo curves through to odd staircases waves and more. A negative voltage can reliably halt the circuit which gives 8 track and holds over the outputs.

2. Earthquaker Devices Afterneath in stereo!?
In this video we patch the Earthquaker Devices Reverb: Afterneath into the Make Noise Rosie to take advantage of the mono to stereo send. Doing this allows us to patch a second audio output from the reflect send into the right input of the stereo return giving us a stereo reverb effect.

From Earthquaker:
The Afterneath Eurorack Module brings the Otherworldly sounds from the effects pedal world right into your modular synthesizer with an expanded feature set. The Afterneath module features one main audio input, one main audio output, an audio send and return for the Reflect feedback path, and nine controls. Four of the parameters are controllable via CV, and each has been equipped with a dedicated attenuverter to process the incoming CV. The Afterneath module has a completely analog dry signal path and a totally digital wet signal path.
