05 27 22 Serge WAD with MN3207 chips

video upload by batchas

"I am sharing here the all session, without cutting it, so you can discover like I did some sounds produced by the modified WAD.

I send a sinewave from my 258j into the input and the WAD is modulated by DUSG (random voltage from Paperface modulating DUSG and also snt to CV IN on 258j).

The WAD saturates very quickly, this is a bit frustrating and I'm still not 100% satisfied, knowing how much time I spent on trying to get the best out of calibration, but there are also some nice sounds here and there popping out. I'll spend more time anyway on it, that's for sure and I'll record on video like I always do.

The mod:
I had great difficulties calibrating the small board with MN3207, cause there’s no support available after I bought this replacement board. No video of calibration process as it was announced bythe maker/seller either.
The RETICONs on my WAD were working, but I thought I should try this replacement which as I understood it was advertised as being better. A small board to plug into the RETICONS headers.
It sounded indeed better in the demos I heard.
I did regret a bit once I read the instructions that came with the board that several resistors had also to be changed or removed on the original WAD board. I knew then I would not be able to simply swap the board and put back the RETICONs if I wanted, but would have to replace again the resistors.
It appeared then, while trying to decipher the instructions and the schematics, that the references between the instructions/schematics and my STS WAD were not matching. This also was first a source of confusion and frustration. Not only the references, but also the values given were not achieving what the instructions were saying they should. So I had to adapt values. Then after finishing the mod I was quite stressed by the huge hiss at the output, even when the module had nothing plugged in.
I did put it aside for months, not ready to troubleshoot.
Yesterday I decided to go back to the trimmers and set them again as well as possible, having them just in right position not to saturate, including the important A trimmer on the WAD board. Like with the RETICONs, the trimming is very sensitive. On the WAD board you either get no signal, a crappy one, or a decent one. I had already experience with trimming 2 x WADs. So logically I choose to set the trimmers on the position where the sound is decent.
I'm still not sure all the resistors are 100% ok, but I’ll leave it like this for now, I spent enough time on this module. I need now to take good care of the pot settings on the WAD. The settings for input signal, filter and feedback, to have a signal that is not too much destroyed and too noisy.
Also it's important not to have the VCA fully opened on the XFader to avoid the huge noise/hiss.
The B output still saturates too much, even at low volume, but I'm gonna let it go for now.

In this video we hear the direct output of the WAD. No EQ or whatever else.

BTW, I'm just sharing my own personal experience with this replacement board. I guess some advanced users will have better understanding of the modification requirements, maybe even CGS boards which match better than the STS ones when it comes to resistor references and values and will feel ok that there's no support offered after all. It was not my case, but I'm impatient now to focus on making music and have fun with some weird delays, rather then spend hours on technical details or with a soldering iron in my hands."

"I had been making all sorts of cool music on my newly acquired Squarp Pyramid... but then it gave me 'Fatal Error' and I lost the entire track I had been writing. Sounded lovely, I think. Well, now it's gone and I'm nervous I bought a (used) machine that is faulty. :/ Sigh..........."

Meet The 3rd Wave - Advanced Wavetable Synthesizer

video upload by Groove Synthesis

"Special thanks to J3PO for the demo (julianpollack.com). The 3rd Wave is a powerhouse wavetable synth with analog filters, 24-voice polyphony, and 4-part multi-timbral performance capability that’s like having four independent 6-voice synthesizers at your fingertips.

Each of its 3 oscillators per voice can be a classic PPG-era wavetable, a modern high-resolution wavetable, or an analog wave shape. Create up to 32 custom wavetables of your own with the 3rd Wave’s Wave Maker tool, which features sample-to-wavetable capability. Connect an audio source to the built-in audio input and generate a wavetable at the touch of a button.

Linear FM, a 6-stage wave envelope per oscillator, 4 envelopes and 4 LFOs with delay, dual effects per part, a pattern/song based sequencer per part, and an easy to use 16-slot mod matrix all make it a sound designer’s dream.

The 3rd Wave — wavetable synthesis that will keep you inspired.

Andy Fletcher of Depeche Mode Has Passed Away

Andy Fletcher passed away today at the age of 60. I saw Depeche Mode live for the first time as a teenager back on July 14, 1986, at the Irvine Meadows Amphitheter in Irvine, CA. I grew up with their music and still listen to them to this day. They will always be a staple in my life. I have Andy Fletcher and the rest of Depeche Mode to thank for so much magic in my life on so many levels, from being a kid frolicking about in the 80s, to an adult dealing with the trials a tribulations of the day. Depeche Mode is a big part of that and Andy Fletcher was core to the band. He will be sorely missed by so many of us.

This post features two images of Andy. One from Wikipedia, and one from Discogs. The following bio is from Wikipedia. Don't miss the last sentence.

"Andrew John Leonard Fletcher (8 July 1961 – c. 26 May 2022), sometimes known as Fletch, was an English keyboard player, DJ, and a founding member of the electronic band Depeche Mode. In 2020, Fletcher was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Depeche Mode.[1]

In the late 1970s, Fletcher and schoolmate Vince Clarke formed the short-lived band No Romance in China, in which Fletcher played bass guitar. In 1980, Fletcher met Martin Gore at the Van Gogh pub on Paycocke Road in Basildon. With Clarke, the trio, now all on synthesizer, formed another group called Composition of Sound.[2] Clarke served as chief songwriter and also provided lead vocals until singer Dave Gahan was recruited into the band later that year, after which they adopted the name Depeche Mode at Gahan's suggestion.[3] Clarke left the group in late 1981, shortly after the release of their debut album Speak & Spell.[2]

Their 1982 follow-up album, A Broken Frame, was recorded as a trio, with Gore taking over primary songwriting duties.[4] Musician and producer Alan Wilder joined the band in late 1982 and the group continued as a quartet until Wilder's departure in 1995. From then on, the core trio of Gahan, Gore, and Fletcher remained active, up to the release of their 2017 album Spirit and ensuing world tour.[5]

Fletcher's role within Depeche Mode was often a topic of speculation. In early incarnations of the band, he played (electric and later synth) bass. As the band evolved after Vince Clarke's departure in 1981, Fletcher's role changed as each of the band members took to the areas that suited them and benefited the band collectively. In a key scene in D.A. Pennebaker's 1989 documentary film about the band, Fletcher clarified these roles: "Martin's the songwriter, Alan's the good musician, Dave's the vocalist, and I bum around."

Andy Fletcher and Daniel Miller talking about Depeche Mode early days

video upload by Michele Bisceglia

"This interview was shot in november 2015, but never edited and published.
We were in Verbier, Switzerland, for the 3 days happening Audi-o-Rama.
Depeche Mode founding member and keyboardist Fletch & Mute Records boss Miller remember the day they met and discuss other stories about the early days of the band"

A search on the first video to feature Depeche Mode comes up with the following 1981 performance from Top of the Pops. Andy Fletcher is on the Moog Prodigy.
