54HP Episode 8: iPad Acid Composer

"Episode 8 of 54HP includes something a little different, an iPad controlled case with drums and bass-line, the 'iPad Acid Composer.' The Quicco Sound Mi.1e module connects over bluetooth to an iPad running a free app that has sequencers, clocks, LFOs and sliders that can output control voltages. The drums are made with the Snazzy FX Kick_me, ALM Dinky’s Taiko and Bastl Skis and Noise Square. The Synth sound is made with an Intellijel Dixie II+ oscillator, and LXD for VCA, and the Eternal Spring Filter as the wild and squelchy acid filter.

54HP Episode 7: Touch Synth

"After a short break 54HP is back with a touch controlled synth voice on episode 7. The only sound generator is a Mutable Instruments Plaits run through a 2HP Verb. The other three modules in the case focus on touch controls. The Intellijel Tetrapad in fader mode has four faders which each output both fader position and pressure. The Trogotronic M11 is a simple touch button but it has a great tactile feel can can also be used as a VCA or CV processor. The Sound Machines LP1 Lightplane not only has outputs for X & Y positions and pressure, but has a built in recorder feature so you can loop your touch control gestures. This system shows how playable a eurorack system can be without using any sequencers or non human controlled modulation sources.

54HP Episode 6: Bass Monster

"'Bass Monster' is the sixth 54HP case and it is built to be a traditional subtractive synthesizer voice with a few extra tricks. Instead of an analog noise generator the VCNO can generate multiple noise sounds to be added with the oscillators or used for percussion sounds. The mixer, filter and extra VCAs all have boost and saturation effects for adding dirt and distortion, or boosting line to modular levels the way the Volca Beats is boosted in the video. The multiple envelopes and VCAs can also be used to generate drum sounds or do amplitude modulation or analog FM. To finish the Case off is the DPLR which is an interesting dual delay with an adjustable filter and crosstalk for many different delay sounds.

54HP Episode 5: Wave Machine

"On episode 5 of 54HP we put together 'The Wave Machine' which is based around the Piston Honda MKIII dual wavetable oscillator. A Noise Engineering clock/divider and sequencer were used to control the Piston Honda. For modulation there is the Quadra which can be used as envelopes or LFOs. There is a Cinnamon state variable filter and dual VCA to control dynamics and harmonics and a delay for effects.

54HP Episode 4: Lo-Fi Groovebox

"On this episode of 54HP we built a lo-fi sample based groovebox case with the new Assimil8or as the sound generating core. This 8 track sampler and sample player can play back sounds as well as DC coupled CV sequences and modulation. The Assimil8or is capable of high quality sample playback as well, but features bit reduction and lo-fi aliasing options. Clock dividers and mathematical sequencers were used to trigger the samples and the Mum M8 filter adds some more lo-fi sampler character at the end of the chain.

54HP Episode 3: Incessant Noodler

"In episode 3 of 54HP we put together a generative ambient system called the “Incessant Noodler” which will just keep playing droney ambient music for as long as you let it. It has a few random voltage generators to create sequences and modulation, then a powerful quantizer with built in shift register will convert those random voltages into a scale. For generating sounds the Noodler has an analog and a digital VCO and envelope with built in VCA. To make everything sound more ambient there are two effects units with multiple types of delays and reverbs to create a wash of sounds from your generative sequence.
