The Sound of Pure Analogue - Vintage Tone meets Modern Modular in Eurorack form

video upload by AJH Synth Official

"The Sound of Pure Analogue - Vintage Tone meets Modern Modular in Eurorack form, no compromises. This is a compilation of moments from our past videos, demonstrating the sonic power, character and flexibility of our MiniMod system modules. From the early-Minimoog based MiniMod voice with classic Transistor Ladder Filter, to the various other audio and CV processing tools and generators in our range: Each clip is taken from a full-length video, either demonstrating how to create a specific patch, a performance example, or a complete video user guide to the featured module.

'Classic Flute' - How to create a more realistic all-analog patch than Classic vintage preset synths

video upload by AJH Synth Official

"A more realistic flute patch than you'll find on classic vintage synths, showing how it's possible to attain a more convincing recreation of an acoustic sound with modular synths, and without the need for samples or digital modules. A truly realistic flute is too much of a tall order - a greater amount of modules, and a more complex controller, would no doubt get you nearer, but here is a more modest way of achieving a reasonable, and nice-sounding impersonation.
Some of the early self-contained synths of the 1970's tried to make useable impersonations of 'real', acoustic or familiar instruments using easily-selectable presets with a very simple voice architecture. Some sounded better than others, but whilst they were often sonically appealing in their own right, they were seldom anywhere near realistic. Among the more famous were the ARP Pro Soloist, Roland SH1000/SH2000, and the Korg 700/700S - all of which very characterful and unique instruments, with their own strengths, and much loved to this day. This patch is a nod to those classic synths, but also exploring what is possible now with modest amount of purely analogue Eurorack modules.
Patch sheet with notes below.

NOTES
_______
Green dots show approximate pot and switch positions. Pots and switches that do not have green dots are not used in this patch, and should be left at their zero or off positions. Multiple cables may branch from one output to different destinations, so here a multiple should be used.
This patch needs a lot of fine-tuning, so precise pot positions cannot possibly be illustrated, but this should serve as a starting point, from where further experimentation should be applied. The video tries to explain what is happening with the core modules, which should make it easier to understand what needs fine-tuning.
KEYBOARD: Here the controller's MOD output is used to send Aftertouch, but alternatively Velocity, or direct control from the MOD wheel/strip could be sent to the Dual LFO's CV input instead, depending on your controller and personal preference. In the video I also used the Glide module as 'slew' to soften the harsh changes in aftertouch CV from this particular controller, which may not be needed on others.
TAP TEMPO LFO: Because the base tempo is selectable by tap, the rate of the LFO will have to be set by ear.
VCO: If you don't wish to use the envelope to affect PWM, then PWM SHAPE will need to be set just below -1 - the envelope makes a subtle difference here, changing the shape of the VCO's sound slightly.
NEXT PHASE: This is optional, as the noise is heard subtly in this patch, and only becomes more apparent when the AUDIO MIX of the Gemini is in favour of VCF1 (noise) rather than VCF2 (VCO), but to my ears it makes the sound of the noise more similar (see video description).
GEMINI 2412: I'm using the 'high resonance' setting on VCF1. which is set by the rear jumper, or optionally using the Gain Switch (see User Guide video or manual on the website. Without it the resonance will need to be set to maximum, but still might not be quite enough.
Modules used from top-left to bottom-right: Glide + Noise, Vintage Transistor Core VCO, Contour Generators, V-Scale, Tap Tempo VC-LFO, Next Phase, Gemini 2412, Discrete Cascaded VCA.

'Next Phase Voices' - Vocal-like patch using a Phaser like a VCF (Eurorack Modular Patching Guide)

video upload by AJH Synth Official

"This week's 'Patch of The Week' uses the powerful NEXT PHASE Eurorack phaser module as though it was a VCF, with a step sequencer controlling it's frequency by CV - this allows suitable frequencies to be cherry-picked to suit each sound or event. Here the Next Phase is being fed 2 VCO's and some pink noise, which it is tone-shaping to create a human voice-like timbre. The 2 sawtooth waveforms are being pitch-modulated by separate sources to create some organic, human-like instability, and noise is added to give some 'breath' to the tone.

The Next Phase is a complex beast, whilst it can be used very simply and easily, even just to emulate the best phase pedal designs of the past, it can however go way beyond that. Extensive CV control of parameters, coupled with a total of 64 combinations of both 12 phaser 'Stages' and 12 'Emphasis stages', means that this is a very powerful tool for creating unusual or otherworldly textures and soundscapes. See our Next Phase User Guide video for examples."

'Für Klaus' - Tribute to Klaus Schulze, a Eurorack Modular Performance #eurorack #synth #ajhsynth

video upload by AJH Synth Official

"On this channel Sunday 8th @7pm GMT - a 13-minute track recorded as a single-take performance, and a purpose-made tribute/dedication to the late Klaus Schulze. The piece is inspired by his music directly, creating some sounds akin to those he used in the late 1970's, even including one of his sequences. Much of it was composed and rehearsed, whilst some of it was improvised, but I suspect much less so than Schulze's works, which were often much longer, involving more improvisation and more instruments. This piece consists of just three voices across 4 audio tracks/channels, altered or converted in real-time during the performance to achieve different sounds.

As a creator of electronic music, Schulze was one of the most significant influences for me (the video creator). His music, his attitude towards it in the interviews I read of his, and the way he worked alone to create dense, fascinating, complete musical performances and soundscapes, at a time when the technology was in it's infancy, and before later technologies such as complex computer sequencing, sound creation, processing and mixing were available. As a solitary musician, his was a great, empowering example. His bravery to improvise, experiment, and co-exist with imperfections, embracing them rather than fearing them, makes me warm to the artist and the music even more. Schulze used, among others, an early Minimoog (leads) and a large Moog modular system, which he customised with additional modules over the following years. Since the core AJH MiniMod system is directly based on the early, more desirable R.A.Moog version of the Minimoog, yet is entirely modular, it makes a great choice for this homage to one of electronic music's greatest pioneers.

Performance of The Week: 'Vangelis'-inspired Melodic Eurorack Jam w/ Arturia Keystep Pro

video upload by AJH Synth Official

"A melodic modular synth performance loosely inspired by the late composer Vangelis, who sadly passed away this year (2022), particularly his unforgettable music for the 1983 movie 'Blade Runner'. This is a kind of homage to someone whose work has doubtlessly coloured the music of many musicians who came after him. The instrument used consists of a range of AJH Synth modules to create rudimentary analog percussion, choir' like pad, choppy monophonic pattern, and Blade Runner-is lead sounds, all of which are entirely analogue.

Modules used:
Percussion - Entropic Doom, Multi Burst Envelopes, Discrete Cascaded VCA
Choir Pad - Glide + Noise (a little glide added), Precision Voltages (for choosing note intervals whilst composing) Vintage Transistor Core VCO (x2, sawtooths), Wave Swarm, Fixed Filter Bank 914, Lunar Module (as noise source), Next Phase, Dual LFO + VCA (for panning FFB), Muting Mixer & VCA
Sequence - Vintage Transistor Core VCO (x1), Ring SM (adding 1 sub-octave, Sonic XV filter, Dual RVG (modulating filter), Contour Generators, Discrete Cascaded VCA
Lead - Full MiniMod voice (Glide/VCO x3/Ladder Filter/Contours/VCA), Dual LFO + VCA (pitch vibrato), DH-ADSR (providing envelope for vibrato level)
Sequencer used is the Arturia Keystep Pro"

Next Phase User Guide - Vintage-Voiced All-Analogue Eurorack Modular Phaser

video upload by AJH Synth Official

"The NEXT PHASE is a hugely versatile phaser, with extensive voice controls, CV control, and an ability to attain vintage tone without the significant noise floor of many famous guitar pedal phasers of the past. It's based on the EHX Small Stone made famous by Jean-Michel Jarre and others, but since it's modular it goes way beyond it in sound-sculpting potential. It can produce the familiar 4-stage phasing sounds of such phaser pedals, but can have up to 12 stages in both the phase stage, and emphasis (resonance/feedback) stage independently, creating even more harmonic complexity. Also, it's internal LFO can be disabled, sent to other modules, or used in combination with external CV signals, such as envelopes or sample & hold for example. It has 2 outputs taken from different points in the phasing process, which can be used to create a stereo effect, and a 100% wet output for processing externally. With all of these features combined, the Next Phase can go from classic early electronic music and synth pop, to modern electronica and sound effects/soundtracks/soundscapes, even percussion processing. See this video showing how it can be used as an interesting alternative to a filter/VCF: [posted here]

Patch of The Week: Envelope-Controlled Phaser - with Next Phase, an all-analog module for Eurorack

video upload by AJH Synth Official

"This week I'm using an envelope generator to control the phasing effect of an analogue phaser - the AJH Synth Next Phase, which can be used in a similar way, or as an alternative to a filter/VCF. Phasers are often heard swirling around in answer to their own internal clock, but with the Next Phase's CV control of frequency, this can be controlled by an ADSR in the same way you would control a filter, producing similarly expressive, but also unique results.

The Next Phase can be configured to sound more akin to vintage phasers of the past, with perhaps only 4 stages, less emphasis (resonance), and the colour control to create a darker tone. However, with it's huge range of possible combinations of both stages, and emphasis stages (up to 12 for each), extensive frequency and emphasis range, depth and modulation controls, it can go way beyond famous vintage units and produce some otherworldly modulations, from subtle to extreme.

Next Phase User Guide video coming soon.

AJH Synth Patch of The Week Videos

video uploads by AJH Synth Official

Videos by supoorting member, DreamsOfWires.

Playlist: 1. Patch of The Week: The Sonic XV's Wave Folder - So many tones from just 1 VCO's Triangle wave
'Sonic Arps': The Sonic XV Transistor Diode Ladder Filter has a built-in Wave Folder, and in this video I'm using an arpeggiator in random mode to show the many subtle flavours of sound it can achieve from just a simple triangle wave from a single VCO. I will also pull a huge variety of timbres from a sine wave in a similar fashion.
The filter is a re-creation and expansion of the VCF from the Musonics Sonic V (5) synth of the 1970's (predecessor of the Moog Sonic Six), and shares a similar character to that of the EMS Synthi and VCS3, also being early diode filters. Bearing that in mind you might expect it to produce aggressive tones and chaotic feedback, which it can do well enough, but you might not have expected that it can also be very subtle, organic and warm in character, particularly well-suited to melodic arps/patterns and percussive sounds. With the added wave shaping functionality that wasn't present on the original, along with 24dB and 6dB low pass modes, and band pass filtering, this module packs a lot of tone shaping into 14hp.

Index:
00:00 'Sonic Arps'
00:34 Introduction
01:01 Assembling the patch
01:39 Sounds & Settings
04:33 Patch Sheet

A PDF file of the patch can be downloaded here: https://kvisit.com/8AE/xfUG

Patch notes:
Green dots show approximate pot and switch positions. Where a pot has two dots, this illustrates the range I move them during the video. Pots and switches that do not have green dots are not used in this patch, and should be left at their zero or off positions.
I'm using the VCA as a mixer so that I can use the outputs from both the BP and 6dB outputs of the Sonic XV. Notice in the video they are set at different volumes at different points depending on the sound - you will need to adjust this too, as different combinations of IN LEVEL, IN MIX, IN WAVE, and filter settings can make a significant difference to volume levels.
Modules used from left to right: Vintage Transistor Core VCO, Sonic XV, Contour Generators, Discrete Cascaded VCA.
2. Patch of the Week: 'Schulze School' - Melodic Eurorack performance + 'how-to' guide & patch sheet
This week's patch makes use of the V-Shape wave shaper/wave folder to sculpt the great analogue tone of the MiniMod VCO to create some delicate timbres that reminds us of Klaus Schulze's mesmerising sounds created on his sequencer-driven Moog modular synth systems in the 1970's. It also makes particular use of the Ring SM as a sub oscillator generator, and the rich tones of the Sonic XV diode filter.

Check out the AJH Synth playlists for more 'Patch of The Week' videos, which will be either performances or 'how to' guides detailing a range of sounds, some familiar, some less so, and each containing a patch sheet at the end to show you how to construct it for yourself.
3. Patch of the Week: 'Singing Gemini' - Dual Analogue VCF as a Dual Sine Wave VCO How to & patch sheet
This patch uses each of the 2 analogue filters of the Gemini as a dual VCO, self-oscillating, so that they produce sine waves and can be sequenced melodically using the Korg SQ-1 or any analogue step sequencer. This guide shows you how to make this patch, along with a patch sheet at the end. It is one of the many ways you can use just a couple of Eurorack modules to make music, as modular synthesis can be rewarding even with a minimal gear list.

Ghost Money

"Improvisations using two of the rather excellent AJH Synth Next Phase modules I recently acquired. One for each manual/subharmonic generator. Lens focus leaves something to be desired but the camera is an SLR with only basic video facilities and the only angle I could record from. Not intended as a module demonstration, just exploring some of the timbral possibilities and sharing with you. For in depth demo and review see the Divkid video" [posted here]

Published on Jan 9, 2019 DivKidVideo

"So here we have the Next Phase from AJH Synth. A great follow up from the original Mega-Phase 12 from AJH Synth. The next phase is a dual input, stereo output phaser with selectable stages and separately selectable emphasis (resonance) paths. It's all analogue, sounds absolutely lush and is a lot quieter that the original Mega Phase, but for those looking for a bit of noise a mojo you can mix a bit of noise back in which is a nice effect.

AJH Synth Synthfest 2018

Published on Oct 15, 2018 DivKidVideo

Playlist:
1. AJH Synth Sample & Hold and Slew // Synthfest 2018
Here's the new Sample & Hold (SH / S&H) and Slew module from AJH Synth. It has a shapeable noise source and clock source on board alongside a gated slew circuit with linear and exponential control as well as your standard sample in and outs.
2. AJH Synth Fixed Filter Bank 914 // Synthfest 2018
Here's the rather tasty sounding Fixed Filter Bank 914 from AJH synth. I'm sure the 914 in the title resonates with a few Moog Modular fans out there. It's a low and high shelf/filter with completely isolating bands in between. There's odd/even or stereo outputs as well as CV blend-able mix output between the left and right bands and the dry and wet. So you can fully exploit the huge range of tones and shaping this can offer. Looking forward to getting this one in to demo.
3. AJH Synth Fixed Filter Bank 914 // Synthfest 2018
I really liked the Mega-Phase 12 from AJH Synth and now there's the new (totally uniquely named ... ) Next Phase! This is an updated version of the Mega Phase which a much lower noise floor, dual inputs with level control and a new colour control to tilt and shift the colour of the phasing. This was one of 4 new modules from Synthfest others below.
4. AJH Synth Updated Glide + Noise // Synthfest 2018
The Glide + Noise module was the only AJH Synth MiniMod module that wasn't skiff friendly. The new version is now a slim single re-designed board that's skiff friendly, now responds to negative CVs and has a huge 14 octave range. There's positive, both or negative only slewing, noise generation and a unique gated slew effect that was unique to the original Moog Minimoog Model D.
