ARIES MODULAR ANALOG SYNTHESIZER

images via this auction

"Aries was an innovative company located in Massachusetts that sold modular synthesizers in either kit form or pre-assembled through the late 1970's. Aries modules sound very much like Moog equipment (the voltage controlled filters are clearly a patent infringement) and use a similar patching system, except that mini jacks are used to make connections rather than the standard 1/4" leads.

As a result, Aries equipment is quite compact (by standards) and a fraction of the price of a second hand Moog or Emu system. With the exception of the Aries III, most of the systems were housed in rather bland plywood cases, and designed to be used for serious academic or studio work. (Aries assumed that its customers were serious bad-ass synthesists who would not care about cosmetics.)

The Aries marketing department appears to have had something of an attitude problem, and its promotional literature shows a clear distain for the pre-set and portable synthesizer market.

The Aries manual is prefaced with comments that "you bought one of our systems, so you're obviously not an idiot and we won't insult your intelligence by explaining basic functions to you". Potential customers were assured in a mildly threatening tone that modular synthesizers were the ONLY choice of a real musician.

Aries modular systems were not cheap, and ranged from about $1,400 for a very basic System I to almost $4,000 for a complete Series IV (in 1978 dollars!). At the same time, they were successful enough to drive Moog out of the kit market, and establish a reputation for well made, if ugly synthesizers. When I have had to bring Aries modules across the border, Customs has had trouble believing that this is musical equipment and not military surplus!

Pictured here are close-ups of four Aries modules: To the left are the (from left to right) AR-331 Pre-Amp/Envelope Follower, the AR-334 Sequencer and the AR-318 Sample and Hold. To the right is the AR-315 Balanced Modulator. Note the slight cosmetic and colour variations from year to year. Many of the modules had dual controls, such as the 8/16 event Sequencer. Pitch was set manually with the rotary pots, not an easy thing to do given the cramped space."

Update via Peter Grenader in the comments:
"Aries was NOT a patent infringement! That's completely inaccurate and I dare say ignorant comment. Electrically they were one of the best-designed synthesizers ever produced. These guys were engineers and smart ones at that. This becomes immediately obvious to anyone who sweeps their schematics and knows what they're looking at. Aries was the real deal.

Let's not forget the ARP 2600 was designed by Aries' co-founder Dennis Colin and would have been twice a good as it was if it wasn't later cheapened up by Pearlman who replaced the active CV mixers with passive summers which introduced bleed and interaction which wouldn't have been there if they had stuck to Colin's initial design.

Think twice before passing the Aries off as just another 'kit'. They're dual core VCOs were probably the best ever in the history of modular analog instruments."

More info on the Aries System Modular

via kkissinger on this electro-music.com thread (see the thread for updates):

"After 33 years, my Aries still works to specification.

They used Allen-Bradley pots and they have not become scratchy after all these years. I have had to replace a bypass switch on the Phaser and have, in the past, had to replace the big capacitors on the power supply.

The oscillators are extremely stable.

I have made a few mods to the synth. I dioded the gate and trigger inputs to the envelope generators to prevent "backfeeding" of trigger and gate signals. I've added a Paia MIDI-to-CV converter to it.

The only module that I don't (and have never liked) is the output module because it is too noisy. However, not a big deal because I always just fed the output from the end of my signal chain (generally a VCA) directly to my recorder and/or amplifier-speakers. I want to rebuild the output and power module to bring the level up to +4dbv balanced output for compatability with the rest of my studio.

The keyboards have also held up very well. The contacts are self-wiping gold-plated contacts that never need cleaning. If a contact is intermittent then all one has to do is repeat the note a few times (this happens on some of the less-used high notes).

The Pitch-to-Voltage converter is really an awesome module that works very well.

How does it sound? Well, if you like Moog or Arp Synthesizers, then you probably would like the Aries.

If you purchase one, make sure that it comes with all the schematics. Since it is a kit synthesizer, the quality may vary depending on the skill of the builder.

Also, I power up my Aries on a regular basis -- this is important. An instrument that has sat in an attic for thirty years may require a major restoration effort.

The Aries is a precision instrument -- for example, if you want to do classical transcriptions, then the keyboard action and tuning accuracy permits this kind of use. The five-octave keyboard was quite a luxury in the mid 1970's. They utilize 1% metal film resisters across the keyboard voltage divider. The keyboards are two-voice capable. The voice output produces a voltage that corresponds to the lowest note that is pressed. The aux-voice output produces a voltage that is the difference between the highest and lowest note. Thus, to track the highest note one must sum the Voice and Aux Voice voltages.

The control voltages are standard 1v/Octave. The gates, triggers, VCO, and LFO voltage are all 10v peak-to-peak. Thus, the Aries modules are compatable with modern equipment.

I just posted some looped/improvised tracks at http://kevinkissinger.com/ariesinfo.shtml. You will also see a number of multi-track works and other Aries synth tracks from my tape "archives" there.

On my theremin page, I used the Aries for parts of the Franck "Prelude, Fugue, and Variation".

I'm not entirely sure -- from what I've seen my collection of Aries tracks may be one of the largest that is available all in one place.

We are holding a regional electro-music festival here (near Kansas City) in July. I plan to have the Aries there in the exhibition space and may use it for a set. Would be great to have you attend and you will get to experience the Aries and a lot of other homebuilt/DIY equipment there. Smile

ARIES MODULAR 300 Vintage Analog Modular Synthesizer

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

See the original demo records for the Aries Modular posted here.

via this auction

"Aries Modulars are quite rare. They were designed in the 1970s by Dennis Colin (RIP), the designer of the ARP 2600 (which we’re selling too), and they sound incredible. You can find the original demo record for the Aries here: [posted here]

And here are a few sound effects demos we did on another system we sold ages ago: [embed above]

This Aries system is in great shape for a used item of its type and age. It was assembled by a Bell Labs engineer (in other words, someone who was very qualified to assemble electronics from kits) and contains more modules than most Aries modulars we’ve seen, with a total of 14 modules. Our tech spent over 24 hours fully cleaning and overhauling it and the end result is a perfectly working example and perhaps the most beautiful Aries system out there. We have 32 photos of this system, but eBay only allows us to post 12, so please contact us for a link to the rest.

We feel this system should make anyone looking for a used Aries System very happy. It's a real pleasure to play. If it doesn’t sell soon, we will either end up trading it for another rare vintage modular synth or it will end up in The Synth Sanctuary vintage synth recording studio, along with the 33 module Aries system and tons of other amazing gear that’s already there. Finally, we have recently begun restoring vintage synths for others, so if you’ve got a synth you’d like restored to the highest standards, we may be able to help."

BSEM - The Boston School of Electronic Music Website

This one in via an anonymous comment:

"Everyone should check out this link for info about Boston School Of Electronic Music, founded by Jim Michmerhuizen, who also wrote the original Manual for the ARP 2600. Somewhere at the site is a pdf with a graet patch for the 2600 by Jim in 1972. A SAMPLE/HOLD PATCH THAT SWINGS.
http://2little2late.org/BSEM/"

via the website:

"The Boston School of Electronic Music was "founded in Boston, Massachusetts, in May of 1972 by Jim Michmerhuizen, BSEM was the first independent school of electronic music in the United States.

Closing in 1978 as the result of a catastrophic fire, BSEM was a focal point for those interested in electronic music synthesis. This site is an attempt to preserve some of the history and culture, and to document that unique moment in the late 20th century..."

An interesting side note according to this post, "a former ARP engineer told me that this was a side project of a ARP/Aries engineer for the Boston School of Electronic Music."

I'm curious if this was Jim Michmerhuizen's or Dennis Colin's, the engineer behind the ARP 2600 and Aries modular. If anyone knows, feel free to leave a comment below. A search for Jim Michmerhuizen on the site brings up a couple of previous posts but no mention of Aries.

Updates via the comments:

Fletcher Ingram:
"The person in question is Ron Rivera. I can't find where I saw that he was evolved in the ARP techy stuff department, but the following link: "http://www.gentleelectric.com/AriesMusic.html" indicates his having done work for Aries Music and that he did fix, clean, restore all things synthesizers. In his dining room was either a Moog 55 or 35 continuously being worked on, or it was the dining room table. You also had to be aware of the rabbit droppings throughout his apartment. He help with the Aries analog Sequencer & Sequential Switch. He offered modified ARP2600 & Minimoogs, adding Sync and other enhancements. I work with him several times doing menial work. I attended & resided at BSEM for several years before it closed as a student, house keeper, office boy, and Lab assistant. I may have embellished a few things here, but I was indeed involved with most things going on at BSEM in the middle to late 1970s. BSEM was a hell of an experience that I will remember till I go to be with Lord. If further info and corrections are needed:

Michael Wm. Gilbert
"According to Jim M. this synth predated Aries. Per Jim:
'This is a picture of the big synthesizer BSEM built for Wesleyan University around 1974. This was basically Bob Snowdale's initiative; he came to us from W.U. having studied with Alvin Lucier there. Later, of course, Snowdale went on to found Aries.'

Somewhere there was also a big customized Moog synthesizer that we (BSEM) installed at UMass Boston in the mid 70's. Bob Moog himself came, and after it was set I enjoyed driving him back to the airport and hanging out with him while waiting for his flight.

For Fletcher - Ron Rivera's bunny was named Pummel :)"

A Hybrid Digisound & Aries Modular Synthesizer at Switched On

Published on Sep 5, 2013 Switched On·49 videos

"This spectacular synthesizer system is a combination of Digisound modules (white faceplates) & Aries Modular (black faceplates). Originally there were two non-functional systems, an Aries Modular system and the Digisound. Switched On was asked to resurrect two separate system and combine them for the best arrangement of modules. The result was very pleasing to say the least!

This patch is based around the 4 wavetable based Digisound DCOs cycling through a bank of 8 wavetables each. Each DCO has 4 banks of 8 waveforms totaling at 32 possible waveforms. Occasionally you will see the bank being switched to allow a different set of 8 waveforms to cycle. By "multing" the pulse signal off the Digisound Quad LFO we are able to make all 4 Digisound DCOs step through various waveforms in time. One of the DCOs is being processed through the Digisound Ring Modulator to add some extra metallic brilliance, and another DCO is being processed through the Aries Frequency Divider adding even further versatility to the timbre. All 4 are being mixed and summed into the gorgeous sounding fully discrete state variable filter made by Aries. In our opinion the sound of the filter is somewhat reminiscent of a Sequential Circuits Pro-One. We are also sending just a touch of modulation from the Digisound Quad LFO to the cutoff frequency and resonance of the Aries Filter to add some extra animation to our sound. In this circumstance we are using the filter as an output stage as well.

We hope you enjoy the sounds of this very rare and unique modular system that we had the pleasure of working on!

Additional Tone Tweakers Listings

"The Aries Modular Synthesizer was designed by Dennis Colin, designer of the original ARP 2600 synthesizer (which is another synth we buy, meticulously refurbish and sell).

This unit has been meticulously refurbished over dozens of hours to make it not only work perfectly but to also hopefully keep it working perfectly for a long long time. You won't find a better one. Contains the hard to find Phase/Flange module, which makes an already incredible sounding synth sound even better - check out the clips below! And if you want to read about more about Aries synthesizers, please search our website for our other Aries listing(s).

This modular system includes the following:

-AR-318 Sample and hold / clock noise generator
-AR-312 Envelope generator
-AR-312 Envelope generator
-AR-317 VCO (single)
-AR-316 VCA
-AR-327 Multimode Filter
-AR-329 Phase/Flange
-AR-324 Dual LFO Lag / Inverter
-AR-332 Dual VCO
-Output & Power
-New blank panels
-Keyboard

This cabinet was custom built by its original owner. If you're planning on adding modules to this system, please note that the way the cabinet was designed, theres wood protruding behind the 2 blank panels near the middle of the unit that will prevent you from adding typical aries depth modules in those sections without modifying the cabinet. So, either plan on modifying, or stick a couple shallow attentuator modules or custom modules in those two slots. The end two empty spaces will fit additional modules just fine."

1978 Aries Modular Synth

via this auction

"If you are reading this, you know all about the Moog, Buchla, Arp, etc. synthesizer craze of the Early 70’s. But these synths were expensive. Some companies decided to make modular synthesizers available at a slightly less astronomical price by offering them in kit form. At the low end was PAiA and at the high end was Aries. Aries was only in business for a few years, but they were considered the best modular kits of their day.

While I was building my PAiA, a more well-heeled friend of mine built this Aries. However, he was a real electronics genius and made some modifications to his keyboard and input stage so that he could run it as a polyphonic synth using a microprocessor. This was a fairly advanced idea at this point in time.

After he played around with it and got bored with it, it went into his parents’ attic where it remained untouched for 30 or so years. It was given to me during a recent attic cleaning.

Here is a list of modules:
1 Keyboard
3 VCOs
1 Dual LFO/Lag inverter
1 S&H Clock/Noise Generator
2 envelope generators
1 balanced modulator
1 dual mixer
2 multimode filters
1 phase/flange
1 stereo (spring) reverb/Output
1 VCA
2 unknown & unlabeled modules - these are probably custom interface modules for the keyboard/microprocessor, but I don't know since they have no labels."

Aries Modular Synthesizer Track

Title link takes you to a post by kkissinger on electro-music.com featuring a track done with the Aries Modular.

"After the EM2007 festival, I spent the next few weeks at home doing all the stuff that I had put off doing so that I could prepare for the festival. Lately, I have been heads-down to create more live-looping works and look forward to completing new works in the next few months.

Has been a while since I've posted a track here on electro-music. Many folks here enjoyed hearing my Aries synth version of the Bach Concerto in d-minor (3rd movement) and I'd like to share the 1st movement with you.

The track below is a remix from the 4-channel master tape (originally recorded in 1977). The performance of the solo part is recent -- I used the Aries synthesizer and used a touch-sensitive keyboard (I didn't have such a keyboard in 1977). Originally I used a foot pedal to control the volume of the solo.

Hope you enjoy all these vintage synth sounds, painstakingly recorded one line at a time on analog tape (ah, the memories!).

Many thanks to you, the electro-music.community, for your support and encouragement."

I did mirror it here, however do go to the post to check it out along with any discussion and updates on it.

Vintage Aries 300 Series Modular Synthesizer with 61 key Control Keyboard

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"What you are looking at is a special instrument.

300 Series Modules
The core of this system is five modules from the Aries 300 Series. There is one VCO module, one VCF module, one EG module, one VCA module, and one Clock/Noise/S&H generator. Yes, this is basic; here are the module names:

AR-317 VCO
AR-312 EG
AR-314 VCF
AR-316 VCA
AR-318 SH/Clock/Noise Generator
But of course, that's only the core. This system is bookended with some interesting devices. To say that it is "modified" would really be an understatement. It has been lovingly built by a lifelong musician.

The great thing about this system is that it was used by a professional musician as part of his home studio and performance rig for decades. It's often the case with these vintage units that they have aged poorly due to being left for decades in a closet or basement or whatever. But this was used consistently over its lifetime, up to the time of its builder's death. It has been played, as pieces like this need to be.

As you can see, the VCO module has been modified to include a further fine-tuned frequency control, right in the middle of the four knobs.

The Sound

There are an enormous number of modular and semi-modular systems available for musicians right now; the possibilities are almost endless. However, this has an edge that many modern synths don't have: the sound. These modules together sound much more like an ARP 2600 or vintage Moog modular than anything currently on the market. In fact, the sound of the filter is somewhere between Moog modular and early ARP filter. This probably isn't a coincidence, since Aries was a DIY synth-kit company founded by a former member of ARP in Massachusetts.

Ebashi Audio Eurorack Modules Including Dual Aries PMS 338 PP

Ebashi Audio CMOS 7555 CORE VCO /259 Timbre EXP /Triple LFO First touch ( no talking ) video upload by Dziam Bass

Ebashi Audio is a new maker of eurorack modules. You'll find their modules further below, including one based on the vintage Aries PMS-338 VCO. Note Nonlinear Circuits made one as well. The above video features the CMOS 7555 CORE VCO, 259 Timbre EXP, and Triple LFO (pics and descriptions for each further below).

Video description:

"It features Linear AC and Exponential FM inputs with attenuators, one Hard Sync input and a 1V / Octave tacking input, output and offset switch.

Connecting a signal to the EXP FM input will change the pitch of the oscillator.

The H-Sync and FM functions produce a full sound, and it octave tracks very well.

This VCO features four waveforms: Sine, Triangle, Ramp and Pulse wave.

There are trimpots for 1Volt / Octave tuning, High Frequency tracking, and Ramp wave connection. There are two trimpots for the sine wave: one for roundness and one for symmetry. The roundness trimmer also adjusts the amplitude of the sine wave a little.

Parameters are already set. If you would like to adjust these you can do it by ear or using an oscilloscope.

This 7555 VCO also features a 3-way switch providing 3 frequency ranges: MID, VCO and LFO.

The back of the module allows you to ‘pre patch’ various functions.

The Ebashi 259 Timbre module is a dual wavefolder inspired by the famous Timbre section of the Buchla 259 oscillator as implemented in the Easel.

There are four CV inputs, the first and fourth can be controlled with an attenuverter.

Two IN attenuators control the overall wavefold amount of each wavefolder.

Two inputs allow two oscillators to drive the Dual 295 Buchla Timbre simultaneously.

A switch enables the rich timbres of both wavefolders to be shaped in series or parallel.

A triple low frequency oscillator that provides manually variable wave shapes in a wide range of frequencies.

Two waveforms are available: triangle, and square wave.

Rate and Depth of each LFO can be adjusted and an independent 3-way switch provides 3 frequency ranges: MID, VCO or LFO.

The module also offers three outputs (A, B & C) which can be conveniently mixed down and out.

The back of the module allows you to ‘pre patch’ each of the four outputs.
The back of the module allows you to ‘pre patch’ various functions, including CV 1 and 4 as well as both inputs and outputs. There are also two trimpots for gain adjustment."
