"The Supernova is a poly-timbral analogue modelling synth that was released in 2002 and was the grandfather of the Nova, UltraNova and MiniNova. It features 3 oscillators, 2 LFOs, 3 envelope generators, hi low and bandpass filters, a vocoder function, arpegiator, up to 16 simultaneous voices and 7 effects per voice. There are also build in drum sounds and a performance mode which can be played from the keyboard or MIDI sequence.

Everything is housed in a sleek blue package with both metal and plastic construction, a 61 note keyboard with aftertouch, and a knob for nearly every function. This synth is a total beast."

No the external power supply is custom.

"This is novation's best analog modeling since they ever made. I have owned the Supernova and the Supernova II and I personally think this sounds better for some reason don't ask me why I have thought that for 15 years. Must be the DA converters. Me and my friend bought one on the same day I got the Supernova 2 and he got the Nova desktop synth (over 15 years ago from guitar center). We were roommates so I got to hear his all the time at the same time I was making songs of mine and I always thought the Nova sounded better."

Never heard this before now. Anyone else confirm this? I was actually gifted a Nova in the early days of running the site by a generous reader (I will never forget that - it was the first and only time in running the site for over 10 years now), but I never compared it to the Supernovas.

"The Nova IIX is one of the best virtual analogs ever made, which is why you don't see them for sale very often. The Nova II has the complete synth engine from the top-of-the-line Supernova II, and this is the X version, which means that it has 24 voices. It's got an unbelievably fat and smooth sound, and some features that most brand-new synth models don't even have. It can shriek, belch, and howl like a massive 80s analog polysynth, or it can be silky, sparkly, and ethereal like a D50 or WaveStation. Or both at once.
