YAMAHA TQ5 FM TONE GENERATOR w/ Original Box & Japanese Manuals

Interesting note on the design below.

"The Yamaha TQ5 tone generator is a 4op FM synthesizer with 8 voices, 8 notes polyphony and the usual 8 algorithms. It belongs to the same family of the Yamaha DX11 and TX81Z but it also adds ten built-in effects including reverb, delay and distortion, sharing a lot with the V50 and EOS B200. The unit also includes a 8-track sequencer, which makes it a great all-in-one machine in a rather small package."

"The TQ5 has 100 presets, plus another 100 patches in RAM and an optional RAM card containing an additional 100 slots. The built-in sequencer is capable of storing 999 bars of music (about 10,000 notes) that can be recorded in real time or step time from a master keyboard. It also has a function of dubious utility which shows the current time, date and day of the week after a minute of inactivity. It does however expand on the "easy edit" functionality first introduced with the TX81Z and DX11, letting you modify FM parameters with an analog-like approach.

The TQ5 sits in the middle of Yamaha's departure from the DX era: on one side it still retains full compatibility with the classic 4op FM technology while adding bits and pieces to make it sound better and easier to program, but on the other side it's a hard break with the hardware design and interface paradigms that made Yamaha famous during the 1980s.

Supposedly, the slanted design of the control panel should make it easy to operate when placed on the left side of the controlling keyboard. Yamaha suggest having it on top of a PF1500 electronic piano, which is probably the only place it was designed for, considering that every synthesizer made by Yamaha till 1988 had sliders on the left side of the top panel. It won't even fit on a KX76 MIDI keyboard which should be a better companion than an electronic piano.

Although no further information could be found, the TQ5 has apparently been designed (together with the YS200) by the German design firm Frog, which was also responsible of Apple's successful design language of the late 1980s but probably never really understood how a synthesizer works."

"This is a really nice example of the top of the line 4 operator Yamaha synth module.

Generally less well known than its predecessors the FB01 and the TX81Z it is better featured also possessing stereo effects, 8 note polyphony, 8 part multi timbral and an 8 track sequencer a card slot for ROM or memory and a fast edit feature.

There are 99 preset voices, 99 user voices already programmed and I am including an RCD102 Contemporay ROM which integrates seamlessly giving instant access to nearly 300 voices in all."

If you follow MATRIXSYNTH, you know these do come up now and then, so relatively rare would be more accurate than hyper rare in the description from the listing that follows. One of the coolest retro designs for a desktop synth imo.

"This is a hyper rare Yamaha FM synth from 1988. You won't find another one for sale. It's sounds are from the DX line and don't get more 80s. It's in great condition and comes with the original manual which is very in depth and covers all aspects and functions of the synth.

Specs:

The TQ5 is a pressure and velocity sensitive desktop (8 voice multitimbral) FM synthesizer.

4 operators (8 waveforms and algorithms) with dedicated (ADSDR) envelopes,

3 stage pitch envelope, an LFO (saw, square, triangle, random waveforms),

10 effects, card and MIDI interfaces

8 track sequencer

200 presets (100 editable)"

YAMAHA YS100 FM DIGITAL SYNTHESIZER - 4op FM with EFFECTS

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

Here's one we don't see often. Funkiest looking synth ever? You tell me. Note the serrated ends. The following are some details from the listing:

"In GREAT Condition EXCEPT: The first three keys are broken (see photos)

Everything else JUST FINE

EXCEPTIONALLY CLEAN SOUNDING Fourth Generation 16-Bit, 8-Part Multitimbral, Programmable Multi-Waveform 4-Operator FM Synthesis with Onboard EFFECTS and Data Card Storage. The sound engine is essentially identical to the TQ5 Synth Module minus the sequencer, and the next generation from the rack-mounted 4-Op TX81Z.

Because of this synth's unusual styling, it has become very collectible apart from its ability to create just about classic 80s FM sound you'll ever need. Especially those icy DX Strings and that DEEP, snappy LATELY BASS."

"Think of it as a desktop TX81Z with the addition of a sequencer and great-sounding STEREO EFFECTS. Comes with an external 15V Power Adapter and a copy of the MANUAL on CD-r

NOTE: Although all the preset patches all work fine and the unit functions perfectly, the internal battery has not been changed, and if you wish to save your own presets, you'd either have to replace the battery or use a RAM Card (not included). If you're looking, I assume you're aware of this."

Yamaha TQ5 Tone Generator Sound Module FM Synth

via this auction

"This is a sound module, FM synth, basically an 'entry-level' FM synth. This unit is in working order, I've used it extensively, recorded with it, etc... However it does have a few quirks that I never did figure out, the date and time settings never stay when I set them, and also it always starts up out of tune. By that I mean the 'tune' setting always resets to +62, meaning it's sharp. Not a huge deal, but it may need a new battery, not sure..."

Yamaha TQ5 FM Synthesizer Sequencer with Clock Out Mod

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Good condition save for minor sticker residue which will come off with alcohol.

Has been specially modified to have a Clock out. There is a diagram attached to the listing which explains where this is in the circuit.

The metronome is very loud, and is added to the audio after the volume control.

There is a 1/4" socket on the side of the machine that taps that clock out, so you can run it through a separate mixer channel and taper off the high end and modify it's volume.

Does not include power supply or keyboard shown in picture.

Power supply is listed as "15v" on back of unit, however, 12v is sufficient."

Factory presets demo video posted here.

"The TQ5 was an entry level FM Workstation in a keyboardless, sparsely decorated desktop unit. It takes after the smaller line of FM synthesizers like the DX-100, DX-21, DX-11, TX81Z, and FB-01. These featured 4 FM operators per voice, and 8 voices of polyphony. And like the latter three, 8-parts multitimbrality was featured. The TQ5 also had easy "Quick Edit" keys to access some basic parameters for instant tweaks. The TQ5 was capable of many of the good, the strange & the weird sounds FM synthesizers made.

The TQ5 featured built-in digital effects and an 8-track sequencer (with 8 song capacity) rounding out the "workstation" aspect of this machine. Designed for use as a stand-alone FM workstation or as a MIDI module, the TQ5 was poised to bring high-end FM sounds to entry-level users."

via the seller: "looks like the previous owner disfigured top of this TQ5, maybe trying to clean it with an acetone based cleaner. so to clean it up I had to sand and repaint the partial face w/ a silver/grey "hammered on" textured paint. it looks pretty cool and a lot better that it did. and while I was inside,i removed dead battery & I soldered in a new battery holder w/ replaceable 2032 battery, i did a factory reset & set day & time, item works great & sounds fantastic!"

"One of the most innovative items Yamaha produced.  It's got the same sound chip as a TX81z, deliciously grainy effects, a sequencer, basic sound editing from the front panel --- oh, and a clock. By Clock, I mean days, months years, hours clock. It has a real time clock chip inside, and when the screen times out, you get a nice clock.

You can see pictures of this machine, and internals of this unit, and general information here.

My unit has Click Out modification that I developed.  The machine has a metronome you can turn on, but it's a very loud, very harsh digital beep which is added after the volume control. If you insert a jack into the socket on the right of the machine, it outputs this beep through that socket. You can then run it through a channel on your mixer, EQ down the harshness, use it to trigger tap-tempo equipment without MIDI to keep it in tight synch with this."
