Soup Granular by The Strange Agency

"Retro Future

Inspired by the oil can delays of the 60s and our previous granular explorations, Curtis™ and Spunk™, Soup brings you a virtual magnetic fluid that you can record onto, slosh around, and play back from. You can use it as a unique delay effect or more like a granular synthesizer, concocting your own wholly novel sounds.

Quantum Sound

Soup breaks up recordings into individual sound quanta with which you can interact as if they made up an audio fluid. They can be played linearly or randomly, forward, backward, or even sideways. They can, moreover, be stirred together, giving a whole new meaning to mixing sound.

Sounds Touching

Not only is this an extremely visual audio experience, it’s terrifically tactile as well. With support for multi-touch, Soup lets you get in there and mangle the fluid in a way that’s simply not possible with knobs and faders.

Audio Palette

Soup will let you literally paint with sound. You can record external sounds through the microphone or import WAV files, slathering sound over the virtual fluid. Then your fingers can become play heads, reading back the sounds from any position, or multiple positions at once."

Sound Scope Space for iPad

Published on Jan 16, 2013 Apps4idevicesMusic·334 videos

http://apps4idevices.com/read/sound-scope-space-for-ipad
"Sound Scope Space for iPad is a synthesizer (a noise machine) from the Strange Agency developer team. I'm really fond of their Synth Apps... So, this one allows you to "sculpt" the oscillator waveforms with your finger. It also comes with the Kuzmoscillator™ modulator which is an LFO control for pitch and volume and it also has an arpeggiator. You can store your own presets. Unfortunately you cannot record your performances. A Super App!"

An interesting look back. Sound Scope Space was out in 2010 as you can see in this video. The last updated was on Oct 21 of 2012. The Strange Agency also brought us Curtis [video below] and other apps.

"The famous waveform-sculpting synthesizer finally available for iPad!

The latest generation of our Sound Scope synthesizer, with a completely rewritten audio engine, Kuzmoscillator™ modulator, echo, arpeggiator, more range, and higher resolution!

WAVEFORM EDITOR:

Use your finger to sculpt the oscillator waveforms! Try to draw a jagged shape for rich harmonics. Draw a smooth wave for smooth tones. Use a square shape to create hollow, flute-like sounds. Use the preset wave shape buttons as starting points for different timbres. The oscillators will morph to the preset shapes in time with the arpeggiator tempo.

New features: The flat lines silence each oscillator. The stair step lines turn on aliasing, for a harsher, more retro 8-bit sound.

PERFORMANCE AREA:
Simply touch the play area in the bottom third of the screen to play notes like you would on a keyboard. You can use a pinching motion on the ruler on either side of the screen to zoom into a particular pitch region for more precise control. Use two fingers to drag either ruler left or right to change the pitch region you are playing.

With the arpeggiator set to on, try using more than one finger on the central column; Space will step through all of the pitches you have pressed!

MODULATION AREAS:
Here you can change the arpeggiator and echo mode, and change their timing. With the arpeggiator on, you can use several fingers at once on the performance area, and Space will repeatedly step through these notes. With the arpeggiator turned off, you can play Space one note at a time like you would a keyboard.

The Kuzmoscillator™ modulator is an LFO control for pitch and volume. Drag across it horizontally, and you will cause the sound to go up and down in pitch. Drag vertically, and you will do the same to volume. The distance of your drag determines the AMOUNT of variation, while the speed of your drag determines the SPEED of variation.

For fans of Curtis, Sub Shredder, Ocarina, Leaf Trombone, and BeatMaker! For beat box maestros, drum machine programmers, 303 tweakers, synth heads, and analog junkies. If you love your Moog, Prophet, 808, 909, MKS, Juno or Jupiter, you will love Sound Scope Space!"

Truly bizarre. Like some freakazoid thing found at an alien crash site. You keep it under your bed. Away from others. It whispers to you to touch it after you turn the lights off.

Couldn’t agree with the first reviewer more. Like a Strange Agency App, yet stranger still. What does this have to do with either primatology or The Last Train To Clarksville? Absolutely Nothing.
Indeed.

Granular synthesis works by combining many tiny grains of sound from an existing recording, generally creating new sounds with the textural properties of the original.

Granular synthesis allows you to regenerate the recording, playing it forward or backward at any speed, to skip around the recording playing tiny slices of it at random, or to loop a small portion with a varying loop size.

Check out Curtis Heavy, the free original version for a taste and come back here for more!"

1973 Moog Satellite With an Interesting Bit of Synth History

YouTube Uploaded by richspe on Mar 6, 2012

via this auction

Read the description for an interesting bit of synth trivia involving this individual synth. The story starts at the second image below.

"I purchased this Moog new in 1973. It was occasionally used in a recording studio I owned. As you can see it shows little use. Also included are the user’s guide, service manual, and a tech bulletin with detailed tuning information. The user's registration guide is useful for basic settings for most musical instruments and a variety of other strange sounds. A year or two ago I tuned this Moog and cleaned all key contacts planning to sell it, which I didn’t move ahead with for some reason. It was working great. Now it works great some of the time and other times the tab settings don’t change the sound, as they should. Not sure what the problem is. It seems to be somewhat temperature related in that when the temperature is cooler it generally works fine. Perhaps a transistor needs replacing or something else. I am selling it as-is with no returns. The service manual has a full schematic, parts list, and picture views of the PC board. See the video I made 2/29/12 below, at which time it was working. This synthesizer has a great bass sound.

More than you wanted to know: It was used to produce the first radio/TV commercial for electronic money transfer, which became today’s ATMs. Yes, a Lincoln Nebraska savings and loan company started electronic money transfer. It was called TMS, transmatic money service. TMS service was at a special service counter in chain grocery stores. It was very rudimentary, sort of like going to a bank and requesting money from a saving account – no mag card or machine was involved.

The savings and the loan company that pioneered TMS knew that the banking industry would use legal means to shut down this service and that the courts would decide if TMS was legal. The banks claimed that the savings and loan company had not chartered a branch operation through the Banking Dept. of the State of Nebraska, which in their view was required for any money transaction. Not knowing which way the courts would rule the ad agency for the savings and loan company had me do a relatively low cost track rather than purchase a track from the jingle-jungle in Dallas Texas. ATMs are everywhere today so we know how the court ruled. At that time I think I was recoding with my Ampex 440, 4 track recorder (like the Beatles used early on), or an 8 track Ampex 350 deck with 440 electronics. Some of my synthesizer settings for the TMS commercial are written in the back of the user’s guide on blank registration pages. I know some say this is a wimpy synthesizer, but the fact remains that it has that great full Moog sound and it is a quick way to lay down a bass line, banjo track, or a track using any of the other great sounds it will create."

"CP 1919 is the latest and most experimental audio app from The Strange Agency.

A physics-based fluid simulation drives an additive synthesizer, controlling a fat stack of up to 24 oscillators. The multitouch interface lets you control the fluid with your fingers, exciting the oscillators like strings on a liquid harp.

Various settings alter the fluid’s behavior as well as the resulting sound. Coax the fluid into a gentle motion, or crank the parameters for instant sonic madness.

Furthermore, a large ribbon controller lets you detune the oscillators, creating rich, sonorous harmonies or the thickest dissonant cacophony. Meanwhile two independent LFO's allow automated control of both oscillator spread and aggregate pitch.

Play CP 1919 as a drone by strumming the fluid with one hand while tapping the ribbon with the other or use the on-screen keyboard to play it like a more traditional device. The HOLD control lets you leave the sound on or make it keyboard-activated. Hold down ZERO to force the fluid to subside, or turn up the DAMPEN slider to kill its momentum. As always, experiment!"

"Donut™ lets you record loops in two dimensions.

You can use it like a phrase looper, by recording horizontally while using the step controls to step through vertical recording position. You can use it as a realtime processor by using ThruRecord mode. You can record and playback at completely differently speeds. You can even record backwards! You can record and playback diagonally across the Donut™ surface, creating glitchy staccato sounds. You can record and playback with multiple heads, recording or playing multiple positions at once. You can spread the heads vertically to access different portions of the Donut™, or you can spread them horizontally to create an echo effect.

Imagine two dimensional time! Now on the App Store."
