"While you were Asleep" - Quad ESQ's meet the EMW WCS-1

Published on Oct 16, 2012 by TimeSynthis

"Recorded early in the morning hours, just one take, no overdubs. An electronic piece called "While you were Asleep". Just got this rack reconfigured, and for this piece, I'm playing four ESQ's with the VCO Analog EMW WCS-1 (the Wave Composition Synthesizer by Electronic Music Works). The ESQs have quad mono outputs, and one mono output from the EMW is the lead mono voice. Sit back and enjoy. First you'll hear some ESQ VCF sweeps. Then in a middle section, doing some sweeps on both an ESQ patch and the EMW. No effects added until the last slow section, I unclicked the bypass on the Lexicon MX300 to add some spatial effect. The EMW has much less effect treatment than the ESQ's here. I hope you like it."

"Controls include:
• On/Off
• 4 way mode switch: A/B, Gate, Duck, Bypass
• Threshold
• Hold
• Channel A amount
• Channel B amount

Back Panel Connections:

• Channel A In and Out
• Channel B In and Out
• Key input (audio trigger)
• S-Trig input (switch trigger)
• 12VDC power input

Here's what Paia says about the unit:
You can think of a Ducker as lo-tech automation - invaluable when hands to ride gain controls are limited. The PAiA Ducker+ is particularly useful because in addition to the ducking function, it can also serve as a stereo gate and has an unusual toggle mode that lets you use it as an audio router as well. Front panel controls consist of Trigger Sensitivity with LED "active" indicator, Hold Time to keep the outputs active during brief quiet intervals, individual Attenuation Controls on the program channels and 4 position Duck/Gate/Toggle/Bypass Mode select switch. A Footswitch Jack provides for manual control. Works with either line or low level signals.

Duckers automatically decrease the amplitude of program material in response to the presence of a Key signal, such as narration. Ducking the program source makes audio space for the voice-over.

In Gate Mode, the Ducker + boosts the level of the program channels in response to the key signal. When the program and key inputs come from the same source, the result is a noise gate that mutes the channel when the program level drops low enough to make the noise floor noticeable.

In toggle A/B mode, one channel Gates while the other Ducks. The footswitch jack makes this a handy manually controlled channel selector or switchable preset effects mixer."

"Chimera BC-8 in excellent working condition, and excellent cosmetic condition. Comes with 3xAAA batteries installed.

'bC8 contains a stereo headphone amplifier connected to a 24bit / 48KHz digital to analog converter (same unit as used in the bC16). A powerful DSP generates a VCO and LFO (similar to the bC16), also the DSP performs VCF and VCA functions as well controlling the patching of functions to each other and running a simple but powerful ‘ one button’ pattern sequencer. bC8 is controlled by eight rotary knobs and one push-button. Four LED’s indicate battery status, LFO and EG level and other mode elements. bC8 pattern sequencer records the timing/duration of the button presses and all the knob settings for each action, these can be altered live for acid loops etc…'"

Folktek Microgarden

"From Folktek:

Here is the bare-bones version of the garden; perfect in its simplicity and capable of a beautfful range of sound.

The Garden is a conceptual sound art work and a phenomenal instrument for extending micro sounds into waves or generating odd sounds based on an accoustic source.

This piece is a smaller version with a huge sound...The sound very much reflects the asthetic - an electric garden with waves growing from the sound field they're created from. The sound board and spouts of wire extending from it are picked up with high sensitivity and run through a digital delay with a very warm sound. This delay can be as tight as possible or extend to about one and a half seconds. Every sprig of string has a unique sound and the Garden can be played as a percussion piece or soundscape generator. The feedback can be adjusted to generate long perfect extentions of micro sounds to become waves then captured in long format if desired. There is as much musical potential as there is a potential for strange sounds - bits of waves can be strecthed in real time and become distant-relative abstractions of themselves.

The sound very much reflects the asthetic."
