In this video, we take a deep dive into the sound of the legendary Roland JUPITER-4 Compuphonic, one of the most iconic vintage analog polyphonic synthesizers of the late 1970s.

The New Wave synth.

Released in 1978, the Jupiter-4 was the first Roland synthesizer to carry the JUPITER name and helped establish Roland's reputation for powerful analog polyphonic synthesizers. It features four-voice polyphony, analog oscillators, a resonant low-pass filter, an arpeggiator and Roland's early Compuphonic digital control system. Roland also gave the Jupiter-4 the ability to store user presets — an important feature for its time.

The Jupiter-4 may have fewer voices and controls than later Roland classics such as the Jupiter-6 and Jupiter-8, but its distinctive combination of fast envelopes, powerful filter, analog warmth and lush ensemble character gives it a sound all of its own.

Originally released in 1984 as the second single from Ultravox's seventh studio album, Lament, Dancing With Tears In My Eyes became one of the band's biggest international hits and remains a defining classic of the 1980s New Wave and Synthpop era. The song reached No. 3 on the UK Singles Chart and became a Top 10 hit across several European countries.

For this cover, I used a selection of legendary vintage synthesizers and drum machines to recreate the iconic sound and atmosphere of the original recording as authentically as possible.

Robert Palmer - I Didn't Mean to Turn You On | Vintage Synth Cover | PPG Wave System & Emulator II

"Robert Palmer's classic hit "I Didn't Mean to Turn You On" recreated using an authentic collection of legendary 1980s electronic instruments.

This cover was produced primarily with the iconic PPG Wave 2.2 and PPG Waveterm A. Most of the synthesizer sounds and samples were created directly on the original PPG Wave System, delivering the unmistakable sound of early wavetable synthesis.

Additional textures and sampled guitar sounds were performed on the legendary E-mu Emulator II, while the rhythm section combines the unmistakable punch of the LinnDrum with the electronic percussion of the Simmons SDS8.

The drum and percussion tracks feature two true vintage classics:

Since years I making background music for the documentaries of the Dominican Republic Speleological Society (DRSS). It's a non-profit company and I don't take any money for it. The purpose is to sensitize and educate the population about the protection of the native nature.

It`s all about good sound programming. The deep Moog Bass sound is one of the most iconic sounds in history of synthesizers. Sure is the Casio CZ no Moog. But you can create also on cheap and underrated synths useful sounds with soul. Try it.

The patch feature 2 different moog bass sounds (2 lines)
You can play one sound (1+1) or both sounds in combination. (line1+2)

No external fx, compression or eq used. The pure sound.

The rare synthesizer has 1 VCO with 4 waveforms, waveshaper, PWM, 2 ADSR , VCF, various modulations, vibrato and portamento effects. You can use individual OSC waveforms (triangle, saw, square, waveshape) or mix them together.
The later Alisa 1387 has 2 VCOs with Sync and more functions but the sound is very different. The Alisa 1387 demo coming soon.

The Korg Maxi-Korg 800DV Synthesizer from the year 1975 is one of my favorite analog synthesizers. The 800DV is duophonic with two separate synthesizer sections and different play modes. The legendary traveler filter with low pass and high pass and the powerful VCOs + Sub Osc sounds phat and dark.

The Taurus 1 use linear VCOs. The Minimoog and the later Taurus 2 and 3 use exponential VCOs. Linear VCOs are the secret for the stable bass sound of the Taurus 1.

I used the Roland M-VS-1 for the Mellotron (choir, strings) and synth sounds.

Can you replace a classic 70s string machine with a synthesizer?
Yes, you can, even if the concept is different. With the Polysix you get a synthesizer with analog chorus, phaser and ensemble effect. The Ensemble fx in particular is ideal for creating wide and soft strings. The internal effect section is generated via three serial BBD delays. Another plus point is the soft SSM filter.
