Metasonix Wretch S-1000 demo

"Fiddling around with the Metasonix Wretch S-1000 vacuum tube Synth. Weirdest thing in my studio by far."

Looks like Dave of The Packrat and Retarded Animal Babies [see umop for even more], stepped up and answered the call of the bear. Here's his Metasoniz S-1000 Wretch video. Thanks for the plug Dave!

BTW, if anyone ever runs across another Metasonix video, send it in.

  4. So is the metasonic stuff actually useful musically? I love the idea of a gritty alternative to a vco, but this thing is so quirky I think it would drive me crazy. Any demo I've seen makes it look like a noise machine and not very musical at all. It seems like circuit bent stuff, looking at first to be unlimited creatively but in reality it just makes a few crappy sounds over and over.

  5. I have been able to squeeze a lot of interesting noises out of this thing, but no, it's not meant to me used as a traditional musical instrument. Think "experimentation," not "composition."

I'll be putting together some loops using the Wretch pretty soon & that's where it's strengths will surface.

If you're a creative soul and love really outrageous & uncontrolled chaos, it's *very* useful to have a box like this that doesn't do all the work for you. I had a Triton for about six months and I never created a damned thing with it. I just sat there playing presets and listening to all the pretty loops. I guess I just work better with limits... Hell, Don Buchla never even like keyboards attached to his stuff because he's got the same approach... find the noises on your own, man... (lights spliff)

Anyway, with the Wretch I've come up with a ton of really insane stuff that I can't wait to try and assemble. With the Triton, I got nuttin, and even if I did, it would just be the same-sounding shit you hear everywhere else. If all you care about is presets and/or want a compositional scratchpad, save a few grand and just use Garage Band instead. That's what I do...

Eric's a complete nut, but his stuff offers a new direction. It's ugly, and definitely not for everyone, but it's definitely unique.

  6. Anonymous: If you accused Eric of designing something musically useful, he'd probably hurt you. ;)

  7. There's just something about that sound as well. Squelchy, rubbery and fat. If you want that sound, that's the only way to get it. It's like a good cleaning of your ears with a q-tip, or the MS20 filter, it just has that quality. : )

  8. I can second Dave's oppinion: it is not for everyone but at least it is different. What do we have these days? Digital and analog synths producing more or less the same kind of sound or effect.
Needless to say that I have the Wretch and frankly I have more fun with it than with Andromeda A6. The Wretch has many CV inputs/outputs for modulation. It is real fun when I drive and modulate it via my Voyager...
    Cheers,

  9. I agree that it is different.

I'm wondering if a V2 design with more 'range' would be better.

What keeps me from picking one of these up is that it doesn't seem to have a lot of 'range'. I've seen demonstrations of about 3 basic sorts of sounds and about 2 effects.

Even a Buchla 200e can do four things with three effects ;)

But the Metasonix Wretch does those 3 things with aplomb.

    tee hee

  10. My young niece walked through the door today with dog stuff all over her tiny Nikes.

They're ugly, and definitely not for everyone, but they're definitely unique.

I'm asking only $700 for the pair.

  11. But can the Nike's do 3 things?

  12. After the last NAMM everyone was talking about the Radias and the SH-201, but I think the stand out synth from the show was the Wretch. The damn thing is fantastic! It sounds like barbwire being sucked up by a vacuum cleaner.

I cant wait for Tom Waits to get his hands on one, and finally go synth.

  13. I find presets interesting because you can build things on top of it or modify it. Still can get pretty weird; that's what i am doing on my Radias now and I am thankful it has quite a large number of presets... but finding things from scratch is cool too and Radias has empty banks for you to do that with raw oscillations going and you build your own stuff... not VC of course :) Anyway, I don't think the Wretch is in my list yet coz saving up for other stuffs...Like a Voyager! But neat box!!!
