  2. I see a theme,

people with the big kick ass modular setups make crap.

the only person Ive seen do decent stuff is liquidcolor on youtube, there have been like 3 other posts that Ive heard decent stuff on here (buchla 200e, and that one serge post). Whats with this? Don't you have to be a pretty serious musician to afford a huge modular??

  3. I agree, there is definately more gear than talent on the majority of the big modular demo videos.
Many of these videos don't even scratch the surface of what these machines can do. And more often than not you are left scratching your head saying "is that it?"
"is there something wrong with his machine?" It takes effort and some understanding of modular synthesis to make make them sing. It is tragicaly more and more evident that although people find the money to purchase these big systems, unfortunately they don't find or make the time to learn how to play them to there potential.
    Patch On!

  4. The world is filled with tweakers and noodlers. Modulars are for tweakers. Meanwhile, lots of keyboard synths not really plugged into anything but an amplifier are for us noodlers.

The best all-around musicians are a little bit tweaker AND noodler. Not too much of either to step on the toes of good taste.

Videos by folks who are too far in one camp or another can still be useful for learning a technique, or can at least be an entertaining, if alien, diversion.

  5. i think lots of the modular videos on youtube are rubbish but then so are lots of the videos made by people with non - modular gear too....

  6. very true, but every once in a while there are some real gems from the tweakers, the noodlers and even the hackers.

  8. The youtube videos from Morbius and Yves Usson are quite good.

    ReplyDelete
  9. yeah, morbius knows his way around a modular and it shows, good stuff.

  10. Couldn´t agree more with axiom-crux. I´m tired of watching groups of fat men mastubating in front of a zeroscillator.

  11. hahaha how do you know they are fat?

I was thinking, maybe these people are lawyers or doctors that just want to have a bad ass sculpture that makes sound? I mean you either have to be a mad sucessful musician or a well payed professional buisenessman to afford something like this. And this guy aint Richard James

  12. >hahaha how do you know they are fat?

    Didn´t you noticed that?
Modular synth size is proportional to the size of their stomach and probably inversely proportional to the size of their "friend"...

  13. If I had a modular like this, it would be in the living room, not the office/studio... I'd invite friends over & we'd play the mother together :)

  14. ahh... one thing we can all agree on is that the mega modular systems bring out the best in everyone. I love it when these post's get down and dirty.

  15. A salesman at a Steinway dealer once told me that at least 95% of the $50K+ Steinway pianos they sell are purchased by people who rarely, if ever, play them. Most are purchased as status symbols - expensive pieces of furniture that are seldom used in the manner which the manufacturer intended. Meanwhile, the world is populated by countless talented pianists practicing on crappy old uprights with bad actions.

    Such is life.

  16. so I guess what your saying is even if they suck, credit should be given for trying to use their big modulars, lack of talent not withstanding?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Let's hear YOUR modular demos, complainers. Put out or shut up.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Most of the resident critics here don't have modulars, hence their lack of knowledge on subject. Unfortunately they feel the need to lash out at what they could only dream to posses.

  20. How come people who are posting synth demo videos to youtube cannot record the audio directly to the PC instead of over $2 webcam microphones?

If you're willing to drop $2,000 on a synth, please stop by radio shack and buy something to patch it directly into your PC if you're going to do demos.

  21. like i've said in earlier posts, there are three kinds of synth enthusiasts: collectors, noise makers and musicians

  22. Don't forget synthesists. : )

  23. Wow, nice Venom folks. Well done trolls.

I give anyone credit who takes an interest in the subject and supports MOTM, Cynthia, etc. by buying their product.

You had to learn too, and if you think back I bet you had some of the best times when you were just learning. When was the first time you learned how to hook an analog sequencer up? Do you even now know that a quantizer isn't just something in a menu?

  24. The internet is an awesome tool because it allows people to share their art (and/or whatever) with much of the planet. And those countless millions out in cyberspace have the ability to comment back.

I've been putting original music online since 1994. It takes thick skin at times.

If you're going to put something out there, you might want to put some care and thought into practice, preparation, and presentation. It's only the whole world that's listening, after all.

  25. What You Patch Is What You Get!

Plexus, there is four kinds of synth enthusiasts ;) : Collectors, Noisemakers, Musicians...and Copycats! Copycats spend a lot of money in huge systems just to make Tangerine Dream-like sequences with it.

  26. Keyboardwrd, it's trolling. It happens about once a month here, and then I just start deleting all Anonymous trolls. Just deleted one actually. The way I figure it, there is a difference between constructive criticism and just "taking the piss" as the saying goes. If you don't want to risk your trolls being removed, sign up for an account. Why does this make a difference? Because it's a lot easier to put up multiple posts pretending your are different people posting with the "Anonymous" account. You can't really do this if you sign up for an account. You could sign up for multiple accounts to do this, but then we all know how much work you went through do do this, only to risk me deleting your work. : )

  27. Re: the comment about people who shoud "put up or shut up"

Ive messed with friends modulars and within 15 minutes I had the sickest industrial rhythms going. Its all about general synthesis knowledge, after working in max/msp for 6 years, I know in depth what each component in a modular system is good for, and how to use it in experimental but useful ways. I would have loved to record that jam, but I was so deeply into it that the thought of grabbing my tiny little camera and recording a clip of us turning knobs never crossed my mind. Trust me one of these days Im going to upload some synth demos to blow your minds.

I guess the reason I posted this in the first place is that I really do go through youtube when Im bored and watch every modular vid I can find, and 90% suck or are just people showing off what "this effect does when you put a drum loop through it"

Im just jealous in the end, cause if I had that setup, I woudl be making the most amazing shit with it all day and night. One day, one day.
