Serge 5u Tones and Timbres

video upload by Rhythmicons

"These are 5u Serge circuits by Ken Stone/Catgirl Synth and Elby designs, assembled and paneled by by Lower West Side studios. The Dual Universal Slope Generators are the sound sources going into the STG Soundlabs mixer before heading into the Resonant EQ and '73 Filter. From there the signal is going to a Roland RE-301 Chorus Echo, a Roland DC-50, and an AKG BX-10. With this program I tried to capture what it is like to try to maintain a smile while feeling awful inside. I began with the desire to create something beautiful with the Serge, but the pull towards the experimental is sometimes far too great to resist."

New Lower West Side Studio CGS85 Serge Triple Wave Shaper

Product Demonstrationvideo by Lower West Side Studio

"Lower West Side Studio demonstrates the Cat Girl Synthesizers CGS85 Serge Triple Wave Shaper.

3 independent wave shapers can be used individually or combined to mutate incoming signals into something wonderful

For more information visit lowerwestsidestudio.com"

via Lower West Side Studio

"This module is Ken Stone’s variation on the 1973 Classic Serge Triple Wave Shaper module.

To quote the 1982 catalog: The Triple Wave Shaper (TWS) is a non-linear modifier which can transform a sawtooth wave into a sine wave. This module incorporates three independent wave shapers for modifying synthesizer waveforms or for processing signals from preamplified instruments. Although originally designed as a wave shaper for our early oscillators, this module has been found to be a excellent modifier of electronic and acoustic sounds, and is highly recommended for subtle timbrel modifications beyond the range of simple oscillator/filter patches.

Each of the 3 channels supports a signal input with an attenuator. There are 2 control voltage inputs and both AC and DC outputs.

A Join switch connects the outputs of channels 2 and 3 back into channel 1 for some bizarre wave shaping potential. Each individual output is still simultaneously available.

The CGS85 Serge Triple Wave Shaper comes in a 1U width.

The module operates at +/- 15V and comes with a MOTM style power connector. Included is an MOTM to Synthesizers.com power connector adapter."

Messssy mess

Published on Sep 21, 2019 juanito moore

"This weekend's hardware challenge was basically 'Make it Messy!' so this is messssssy. I ran patches between oscillators, sequencers, filters and effects without any concern for anything that made sense, just on whims. The result is pretty unpleasant, but hopefully at least slightly interesting.

No voting this weekend, which encourages lack of polish!

Modules used:
Atari Punk Console x1.5
TH-555 VCOs
Ken Stone's Psycho LFO
Thomas Henry's VCF-1s
303-based transistor ladder VCF
MS20 VCFs
808 kick/snare/hat
909 ride cymbal
Three cheap Chinese reverb circuits built into modules. See my other videos coming soon for how to build one they are AMAZING."

Serge CGS BOG / Random*Source Edelweiss

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Two-panel Serge CGS/Random*Source system. Professionally built and maintained (not by me) in 2008 (BOG) and 2015 (Edelweiss). Includes power supply, adapter, cable, 10 12” unbranded banana cables, 15 8” Pomona banana cables, and 4 shorting bars. Literally plug and play. The enclosures for both panels are bolted together but can be separated. The power supply powers both panels. There is a low-output 1/4” balanced mono output installed on the side of the BOG enclosure (resistors can be easily swapped if higher output/less attenuation is desired).

Both panels and power supply very recently serviced by professional builder in Chicago. Surface of enclosures show minor scuffing and scratches; merely cosmetic."

New Triadex Muse Converter Proto

Published on Sep 15, 2018 otherunicorn

"Second generation of the Triadex Muse converter during development. A collaboration between Nathan Thompson and Ken Stone. [Ken Stone of Cat Girl Synth/CGS]

Basic test only: 3 VCOS, one following the octave slider, one following the standard output of the Muse and one controlled by the slide pots, each being selected by the 3 bit address generated by the note sliders on the muse. Slider tuning is slightly off - a hazard of all analog sequencers.

If only the original Muse had sounded like this...."

ESK- Piano Sample with Modular Effects

Published on May 30, 2018 Metunar

"In this video i am testing my effect modular case. I used only the mono piano from the Sledge synth as tonal source.
I used modules from DIY Ken Stone Real Ring Modulator, Doepfer Sampler A-112 and A-127 VCRF, Mutable Instruments Clouds and Ears, DIY Diodeclipper, Grendel Formantfilter, ...

I didn't put much effort in the piano playing and sadly also not in the correct focusing of the camera."

DIY analog synth project (Steiner Parker "Type" VCF The Final Tweak)

Published on Nov 7, 2017 Adamski Ajull

"Hey guys back again with yet another modified Stiener Parker type 12db per oct VCF, this based on a mashup of Ken stone and Yves Ussons schematics.
I have increased the diode ladder from 10-12, and also the size of the capacitors in the ladder and also my own tailored trimming for keyboard tracking.
There is also a trimmerble diode pair in the resonance network , which can at some points sound like a nice distortion pedal and tames the wild resonance. i have also changed values in the Freq Cut and Res potentiometers resistance to ground to compensate for the bigger change in top end content.
PLEASE USE HEADPHONES OR SPEAKERS TO CATCH THE LOW END PROPERLY ;-).
Again many thanks to Yves Usson and Ken Stone for their inspirational circuits."

Soundplex Synth Demo

"Inspired by the recent Serge DSG thread. . .
www.muffwiggler.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=132548

My colleague, Eden Mononym and I are exploring building a single panel DIY synth, for our own delight, that capitalizes on Serge style DSGs (Ken Stone kits). With 6 SGs at the heart of the system one could have 6 oscillators and, of course, any combination of all the amazing functions of the DSG.

In an effort to test the viability of our little vision I have mocked up some self-generating patches using my old Serge system. All snippets are live, no overdubbing, no editing. Occasionally, I sparingly use other modules (RM, SSG, Noise, VQFCF, VCA, DP and TKB) along with some knob twiddling and sometimes some Ableton fx.

Here, for your delectation, are the fruits of the last few days"

And a short 3 minute addendum:

New DIY Synthesizer Documentary in The Works

via Dmitri Sfc on The Muff Wigglers Facebook:

"Just got the OK from Ray Wilson for an interview as well., Traveling to Australia to interview Ken Stone !... Can't travel everywhere so this is a call to please send video of your self & your DIY rig. Send me a PM here on FB to start the convo. Film ETA is late 2014."

This was the first time I heard of the upcoming film so I followed up with Dmitri Sfc.  It turns out it will be a documentary focused on the makers of Synth DIY.  He is looking for video entries per above as he will likely not be able to travel everywhere.  If you have something to share, reach out to him on Facebook via the link above. Per Dmitri: "SDIYers are encouraged to send me video to be included in the film. the doc will go to Sundance , will be feature length, With a sound track release."

A little bit of trivia, Dmitri was in the 2000 documentary "Groove" (IMDB | Wikipedia) which focused on the San Francisco underground rave scene. That's him on the cover.  His music was also featured in BEND: A Circuit Bending Documentary.

And of course he knows Synth DIY. His work with COA-Modular and Serge designs have been featured here on MATRIXSYNTH numerous times.

Silver Triangles In An Unfiltered Sky

Published on Jul 14, 2013 davidryle·117 videos

"Triangle waveforms without any filters.

Okay maybe the Kaoss pad JET filter on the ribbon controller sound.

The project used 12 vco's, three 5 Pulser wave folders and two Analog Shift registers. I also used three step sequencers and a Ken Stone CGS01 Harmonic Sequencer for the modular synth parts. The keyboard parts are FM7 Mordor patch and the ribbon part is the modular synth with my custom Arduino controller module.

At the end of this video is a primer on the various elements used to create the sound scape."
