Nonlinearcircuits MACRAME | LOGORRHEA | VCF 1

video upload by cirtcele

"Macrame is a 6 channel mixer with voltage controlled level and panning. It uses two SSI2190 chips to do all the work.

You can use the SET pots to operate the level and pan manually, or use CV to get things moving around and up and down.

It has two synth level outputs, two line level ¼” jack outputs and a stereo line output (which works fine with most headphones too).

For some reason, probably because I was slightly askew on post-op painkillers when designing this, the panel is 21HP. I guess this means I need to release more odd HP modules to avoid gaps in cases."

LOGORRHEA

video upload by cirtcele

"Logorrhea is kind of a vocal filter; basically it is the back half of a vocoder crammed into 8HP. There are two inputs, 10 filter channels, a white noise channel and a thru channel, to feed thru the original signal(s). It uses two SSI2190 chips to do all the work.

There are no knobs.

To use, patch in one or two audio signals. Ones with lots of harmonics sound best, pulses, squares or wave-folder outputs, not sinewaves.

Patch in a bunch of CVs to set up your sounds, it expects 0-5V CV signals.

OUT is all channels mixed together.

OUT A is thru, LP (low pass), BP2, BP4, BP6 and BP8 (BP = bandpass).

OUT B is noise, BP1, BP3, BP5, BP7 and HP (high pass).

Using OUT A and OUT B in a stereo mixer (such as NLC Macramé) is nice with panning to move the sounds around."

FAST AND BULBOUS VCF
video upload by cirtcele

"This module uses the SSI2140 chip which is based on the SSM2040 VCF, tho with a few updates.

My first thought when I read the datasheets was that it would be great to design a module that could switch between a phaser and a VCF. Looking back at old SSM2040 designs, it seems most of the usual suspects (T. Henry, J. Blacet, C. Anderton et al) had much the same idea.

This module is based on Anderton’s design in Device 1-6 (yes, I spotted the error) with modifications to suit the SSI2140 and Eurorack.

There are 4 switches, one for each OTA stage, to select between (all pass (phaser) and low pass filter mode. You can have quite a lot of fun with 2-3 switches in one mode and 1-2 in the other.

There is a dry mix pot to mix the incoming signals into the OUT signal, which is taken from the 4th OTA stage. This is probably more commonly used in Phaser mode, but there are no rules, so do whatever you like.

POLES is a weighted mix of the outputs of each pole, it is a bit shy when all switches are turned to Low Pass but perks up very nicely when one or more switches turned to Phaser.

The SSI chip is a bit tight to solder, have your bottle of flux ready, otherwise it is a pretty easy build."

Thomas Henry VCF-1 State Variable Filter.

video upload by EdEditz

"A test and demonstration of the Thomas Henry VCF-1 State Variable VCF which I built on stripboard. It's an absolutely beautiful sounding filter with three output modes which you can use at the same time. Lowpass, Highpass and Bandpass.
In this test I did not have the 1 Volt per Octave input connected.
You can find full instructions for building this filter (and over 50 other synthesizer DIY projects) for stripboard on my website: https://www.eddybergman.com"

DIY Quad Mega Percussive Synthesizer

video upload by Àlex

via this auction

"4 MPS (Mega Percussive Synthesizer, by Thomas Henry):

- 4 equal percussion voices. Each one is 1 MPS.

- Individual trigger and CV (for shell pitch) inputs.

- Independent outputs for each channel.

- Output on the rear panel with the mix of the 4 channels.

It's a DIY project from a few years ago, maybe 10. I haven't used it almost at all. Although the condition of the panel is not the best (it has some scratches, the silkscreen is lost at some point, etc.), in terms of sound and control it is perfect. Unique sound, you won't find anything like it on the market (unless you buy 4 MPS and put them in a Eurorack case.)"

dual octaver

video upload by e j

via Optotronics

"The octaver is a great addition to the dual CEM VCO module (the square wave output should be routed to the pulse input).

It's based on the original Thomas Henry's VCO Maximus. It is a perfect tool for generating additional musical fifth or suboctave tones. Moreover octaver 2 input is connected to the output of the octaver 1 for additional divisions! Of course you can use them separately as well. The great thing is that this module allows you to create very interesting soundwaves and rhytms...

According to Thomas Henry : 'The pulse signal is routed to an XOR/flip-flop arrangement which generates an additional musical fifth or suboctave tone added in. You can think of this in terms of harmonics, or if you wish, as a definite harmony playing in tandem, e.g., a C note with a G note mixed in.

The pulse output from the CEM3340 is sent to Schmitt trigger to sharpen up the signal a bit. The firmed up pulse then goes to switch 'interval' which lets you choose between the addition of a fifth or an octave derived pitch. If numbers are your bag, then think of these as divide-by-1.5 and divide-by-2, respectively. On the far end, switch 'octave select' can further halve things to divide-by-3 and divide-by-6, i.e., a fifth and an octave one octave lower yet.

Polarity switch lets you add or subtract the subdivided signal from the original pulse, effectively doubling the number of waveforms possible. The output of the flip-flops is sent to one side of the blend pot, while the other side t is fed by an isolated version of the original pulse.'"

This is very old school as it uses the extremely hard to find SN76477 IC which was very popular in 1970s and 80s video games (think space invaders). Messssy mess

Published on Sep 21, 2019 juanito moore

"This weekend's hardware challenge was basically 'Make it Messy!' so this is messssssy. I ran patches between oscillators, sequencers, filters and effects without any concern for anything that made sense, just on whims. The result is pretty unpleasant, but hopefully at least slightly interesting.

No voting this weekend, which encourages lack of polish!

Modules used:
Atari Punk Console x1.5
TH-555 VCOs
Ken Stone's Psycho LFO
Thomas Henry's VCF-1s
303-based transistor ladder VCF
MS20 VCFs
808 kick/snare/hat
909 ride cymbal
Three cheap Chinese reverb circuits built into modules. See my other videos coming soon for how to build one they are AMAZING."

Synth DIY - Wiring the Thomas Henry Quad Bass++

Published on Jul 27, 2019 Sergio Gonzalez

"This is an update video at about halfway through the process. At this point its common for fatigue to set in, but hopefully you'll get some encouragement from this video to keep at it. In a project like this you're likely to find situations that the instructions have no advice for, like how to connect all the ground wires together properly, or connecting a capacitor across two pots without a PCB for structure. It's easy to get stuck at this point and give up on the project, but try to just use what techniques you do know to find a solution and move forward."

Fonitronik 4U ADC Sequencer (Proof of Life)

Published on Aug 18, 2016 fonitronik

"This is just a short proof of life of my 4U ADC Pattern Sequencer in Serge format. It runs in it's basic mode.
1st step is set to always ON, whereas steps 2-7 are controlled by the ADC. The ADC gets a voltage from the DUSG (LFO) and converts it to an 8-bit word that corresponds with the 8 steps (=pattern). The ADCs 8-bit pattern is loaded by a latch (triggered by a division of the clock signal).

The sequencer is controlling a Thomas Henry VCO 555 (CV) and a LPG 292C (trigger), whereas the DUSG (LFO) is changing the PW of the clock as well.

BTW the clock is PWM'd, and the trigger output of the sequencer follows the clock signals pulse width, this the changes in the LPGs opening times ;P"
