Knobcon 2023

video upload by Jeremy Parker

"My first Knobcon! What took me so long? It's about way more than just modular, and I simply had a great time. People were so nice, whether they were faces to names I knew online, or complete strangers that I just talked to randomly. This isn't a comprehensive view of everything the con has to offer, but it was a glimpse into my experience. So many people to thank and acknowledge below:

Knobcon 2: Hungry Rat DIY workshop!

video upload by Synth Diy Guy

Hungry Rat 2hp distortion - opamp comparison

video upload by John Schussler

"Welcome to the niche-y-est of all niche-y eurorack videos. The focus of this video is on tiny differences (or not so tiny) between opamps (operational amplifiers) in the Hungry Rat distortion, a 2hp module made by Modular for the Masses and inspired by the ProCo Rat.

To be fair, you'll still get a good intro to the Hungry Rat, which is a very nice use of 2hp. So if you're not opamp obsessed, skip around and just get the flavor.

If you are interested in opamp contributions to the sound, in this video you'll get to hear 4 different options. The 'bog standard' TL072, which everybody uses for everything; the TLC2262, which I gather is 'special'; the NE5532P; and the B072A.

VCO is a Doepfer A-111 sequenced by Intellijel Metropolix.

Amen Bass -- hardware challenge

juanito moore

"This weekend's hardware jams challenge was to incorporate the world-famous Amen Break, a 7-second snippet of a drum solo that's become the most played drum loop in history. The drummer, a Black man named Gregory Coleman, never got rich or famous from his work. Surprise.

I've been working on creating a usable module that can play the Amen Break (and any other sample) for YEARS, and just a few months ago built one. It's still very lo-fi, and difficult to use, but it... functions... if you try hard enough. It's got an ISD1820 voice recorder chip inside it that I put the Amen Break on.

I tried to get 'foghorn' bass. I designed a VCO with two wavefolders built in, putting that signal through two VCFs and a THIRD wavefolder, and then a reverb effect module. If I had enough hands to twist all the knobs, I could probably get a pretty convincing foghorn bass sound out of that signal path... but time is slipping away."

Three New Modules

juanito moore

"Last week's hardware challenge was to use new hardware, so JUST IN TIME for last weekend, here's my three newest modules.

The 'clouds' sound and some of the chord sounds are coming from my new Mutable Instruments Braids (very DIY) modules. The blinking lights create that weird chirping noise, and of course there's goofy reverb goodness going on too.

Here's the Razmasynth Super Warp Generator that inspired my seven-LED chirper module: https://www.razmasynth.com/io/SuperWa..."

Leap Day's Random Hardware Challenge

Published on Feb 29, 2020 juanito moore

"This weekend, the challenge was to feature random elements in your music. A couple years ago I designed and built a module, early on in my quest to design a CV sequencer, that can algorithmically generate CV sequences. The module is very hard to use, not intuitive at all, and the sequences it spits out are not always very good. And when it comes up with a good one, there's no way to get it back.

Pair that with my latest module, the most DIY Mutable Instruments Braids ever, and I played something I'm pretty happy with."

"Weekend hardware jam challenge for the first weekend in November, 2019.

For the first time maybe EVER I managed to stay away from a recognizable beat or meter. Seriously. Not even a kick drum was used. Bonkers."

Dialing the Apocalypse

Published on Oct 27, 2019 juanito moore

"Hardware Jams weekend challenge! This weekend's challenge was to take inspiration from a photo of a burned out sound booth in a burned out amphitheater. So minor modality, filtered noise, distorted bassline, plenty of reverb and delay, that's what I'm going with!"

Overview of Modular For The Masses "My Favorite Reverb" module

Published on Sep 22, 2019 juanito moore

"This is the reverb module I made in the instructional video on my channel.

There are three adjustments I made after this video: 1) I reduced the signal levels going into the effects circuit, 2) tweaked the voltage-controlled clock circuitry, making the initial clock speed faster, 3) trimmed the gain of the signals coming out of the effects circuit to make them about level with the "dry" signal.

If you are tempted to build this module without the wet/dry fader, don't. I still have the first one I built in my synth, which doesn't have a wet/dry fader, and almost all of the effects really need some dry signal to get through. One of the effects, for instance, is a short slapback-style single delay. With zero dry signal, this is not really an effect at all, it's just a delay of the input. The reverb effects obliterate the dry signal in a lovely wash of lush reverb, which can be useful to turn arpeggios into heavenly sustained chords, but isn't terribly useful otherwise.

So to sum up: include the wet/dry fader!!! You can omit the clock speed mod, although I'm seriously going to love this module's CV controllable clock!

Search AliExpress or Ebay for '100 kinds effect reverberation' and you'll find the reverb module I'm using. They're cheap -- less than $20 shipped."

Messssy mess

Published on Sep 21, 2019 juanito moore

"This weekend's hardware challenge was basically 'Make it Messy!' so this is messssssy. I ran patches between oscillators, sequencers, filters and effects without any concern for anything that made sense, just on whims. The result is pretty unpleasant, but hopefully at least slightly interesting.

No voting this weekend, which encourages lack of polish!

Modules used:
Atari Punk Console x1.5
TH-555 VCOs
Ken Stone's Psycho LFO
Thomas Henry's VCF-1s
303-based transistor ladder VCF
MS20 VCFs
808 kick/snare/hat
909 ride cymbal
Three cheap Chinese reverb circuits built into modules. See my other videos coming soon for how to build one they are AMAZING."

DIY voltage controlled Xtal replacement

Published on Sep 19, 2019 juanito moore

Some DIY with Modular for the Masses.

"This is an optional part of the Modular For The Masses reverb module. This adds a voltage-controlled clock to the cheap Chinese digital reverb/effects circuit. With this modification, the reverb effects module can do vibrato, tape-wobble, all the crazy modulation you might want to do.

You can build it!!!

You will need:
PT2399 chip
Ceramic disc 100nF capacitors (get lots they're CHEAP)
Resistors (get a kit or buy 100 each of the most common values)
10uF capacitors
a 5V regulator (the 78L05 I use here isn't powerful enough to run the whole effects module I'm building, so in the final project I'll be using a larger 7805 regulator)
a 100K potentiometer
one NPN transistor, I'm using a 2N3904 (whoops, I accidentally wrote 2N3906 in the video LOL)"

Hardware Challenge entry: Dorian Glassed

Published on Aug 31, 2019 juanito moore / Modular for the Masses

"The Hardware Challenge this weekend was to explore a particular mode. Ionic, Dorian, Phrygian, Mixolydian... I built a module a while time ago for my ribbon controller that DOES some modes, so this little jam is based on the Dorian mode. The rest of the arpeggios and the bass line are just sequencers playing notes tuned to the notes my ribbon controller could do."

Chock Full o' Filters

Published on Aug 25, 2019 juanito moore

Juanito Moore is the man behind Modular for the Masses, and will be part of the speaker line-up at Knobcon this year.

"Hardware Jam weekend challenge. The challenge was to use filters, filters filters FILTERS!!! I used filters as oscillators and as a little bongo drum sound, and of course to modify the drums and keyboard noodling. Now, a high quality filter will self-oscillate in a very pure sine wave, which doesn't have any harmonics for a 2nd filter to work with, so I needed to use a square wave for the "keyboard" part. Square waves have lots of harmonics to filter out in interesting ways. Check out the cheap Chinese reverb effects module -- these modules are SO GOOD. Highly recommended.

You can build this 808 kick drum clone!

Premiered 5 hours ago juanito moore

"Download and print the circuit paper, get the electronic parts, plug in your soldering iron, and build this with me!

This 808 kick drum circuit is functionally identical to the original TR-808 kick with some cool mods. There's a pitch mod for higher and lower kicks. There's a decay mod that will let you get more-than-infinite decay times (it'll just oscillate forever). There's a wave clipper that'll add harmonics to the kick to make it "cut through" the rest of the sounds, which can be useful if you're using small speakers that can't do real bass. Finally, there's lots more *amplitude*.

I have simplified the circuit in a few ways, making it easier to build. You can build a perfect replica with everything exactly as it was from the factory, including obsolete transistors and 5%-precision carbon resistors if that's your thing, but I don't cover that here.

Yes, modules literally in tin cans! :) DIY modular on the cheap - $4 for the oscillator module. That 303 filter does sound good.

"An alternative to the Eurorack format from module maker Modular For The Masses. Its kind of crazy looking but has a certain appeal no?
