CGS (Serge) 8 Step Programmer Sequencer Demo.AVI

YouTube Published on Aug 23, 2012 by Richarius Molindarius

"And here we are boys and girl! :D Finally 8 months after buying the 9 PCBs, did I start putting this guy together, this past Monday. The 8 daughterboards went together in just over 3 hours, building them in the 'assembly line' format. The wiring to the mother board and the front panel combined though, took 2 more days along with a bit of bug solving yesterday and finishing it, this morning. She's working beauty! :D
If you don't have one and you want a very powerful configurable sequencer / programmer, get to ordering from Ken! :D It can be as short as 1 step, or as many steps as you like! :D Forwards, backwards, jumping to and fro between all of the steps. Manually triggerable as well as the ability to use each step to trigger external things. And 4 channels of Control Voltages! 1 pot for each step, for each channel. The amount of things that can be done with this thing, are scary! :o :D

Hope you enjoy! :D"

Quick note: Moving forward I will be using the Richarius Molindarius label for these rather than the old dolphinicus label.

July 21st Serge Negative Slew Workshop at Robotspeak

"Directly across the street from where the original Serge Modular Music Systems store was on Haight st. in the 70s and 80s Robotspeak is celebrating its 10th year anniversary as a store and independant center for music technology learning. With encouragement from Ken Stone and Serge him self the second official Serge module building workshop at Robotspeak will focus on the Serge 1973 Negative Slew. One of Serge Tcherepinin's many contributions to the art of music and synthesis. The Negative Slew is the perfect example of a multi use Serge module. The predecessor and the back bone to what became west coast synthesis. It can be an Envelope Generator, an Envelope Follower, a Voltage Controlled Oscillator, an LFO and a Slope Generator. This multi functional approach to producing modules was an integral part in the design of the circuits being built at robotspeak. An innovation made 40 years ago by Serge Tcherepinin's and celebrated today with Ken Stone's recent re-release of the original 1970s circuit on PCB. The monthly organized group of builders at Robotspeak affectionately named The Church Of The Super Serge are dedicated to the preservation of the lower haight area's rich synthesizer history and the revival of the modular synth hey day in the district. Catch one of these workshops any 3rd saturday 589 1/2 Haight Street San Francisco, CA"

The Completion

YouTube Published on May 2, 2012 by davidryle "A generative real-time recording of the modular synthesizer and Kontakt5. The synthesizers.com Q172 quantizer Aid module is sending midi pitch data back into my DAW (Steinberg's Cubase 6) and I'm routing it to Kontakt 5 with an instance of Sonic Couture's "Bowed Piano" sample sets. I also routed the midi through to the Yamaha TX816 with 8 modules playing a superb piano rendering. Days worth of patching on the modular for everything else. Some modules of note are the Ken Stone BiNTic filter/oscillator, J.Haible Tau "Pipe" phaser, Ian Fritz ChaQuO and 5 Pulser, two CGS01 sub oscillators and one CGS01 in Harmonic Sequencer mode. The HS mode is generating the pitch data for the formerly described piano patches and the high pitched sliding sounds in the background. The dotcom sequencers and STG sequencers are producing voltages for the BiNTic dark ambient industrial sounds in the background. A final white noise to the Q107 filter, Sputnik VCS, Cynthia QLPG, SSL digital delay and Oakley Deep Equinoxe phaser and STG signal amps round out the sound voices."

"this patch has a little oompa-woompa goin on.

Sorry for all the BACK. Nothing like a little BACK to watch..

Anyway, If you can sit through this 5 minutes it develops quite nicely..
I like making chance tonality.. if that makes sense..

techtalk---
a 40106 oscillator is clocking a 4040 divider of which /2 is then clocking a perf board version of the logic from Ken Stone's CGS Master DIvider. those outs are then triggering 4 DS8 drum clones, as well as 3 Oscillators through VCAs. There are also some LFO cutoff controlled filters with different pitched 40106 Osc. all running to mixers then on to a Roland JC-50. Recorded directly through iphone via 8mm app."

SergeDUSG1.AVI [Serge / CGS Universal Slope Generators]

YouTube Uploaded by dolphinicus on Jan 8, 2012

"This is a short vid. showing off my 2 x Serge / CGS Universal Slope Generators that I'd just completed yesterday. Thankfully, Serge Tcherepnin who had started Serge Modular Synthesizers in 1973, has licensed a few of his modules to the wonderful Ken Stone - owner of CGS Synths, so that he may produce PCBs of some of Serge Tcherepnin's wonderful modules.
The Serge USG is capable of operating as an Attack/Decay EG; Attack/Sustain/Release EG; LFO; VCLFO; VCO; VCF; Envelope Follower; Pitch Tracker; Slew Genereator (Portamento) as well as allowing the Rising and Falling wave shapes to change linearly or logarithmically.
In my 20+ years of working with and building modular synthesizers, I have never seen anyone else create a module as powerful, as this one.
I hope you enjoy the couple of fiddly bits that I've done with the 2 of them in this 9 minute video. As always, there'll be more coming! :D"

"I used the DIY Layout Creator to plan my perfboard and a 6HP Makenoise blank as faceplate. This was the first time I'd made a parallel board, which meant using wire connections for the jacks etc. However, the benefit of this was I didn't have to be totally accurate when drilling holes. "

Synthwerks FSR-1N

Some pics of my newly acquired Synthwerks FSR-1N. This one was an early birthday present from George Mattson of Mattson Mini Modular during my last visit checking out his monster EML modular. Thank you George!

Click on each pic for the super size shot. I also found a new use for my OTO Biscuit - mood lighting for synth pics! :) No disrespect to the Biscuit, I absolutely love mine. You can also see a Division 6 Filtare SEIII, Tiptop Audio Z8000 Sequencer, and the bottom of an Elby Designs - Ken Stone CGS735 Synthacon Filter, all in a snake skin Monorocket case.

The focus of course is on the Synthwerks FSR-1N. The FSR-1N is a single channel "Force Sensing Resistor." In short, it's a touch sensor module with two outputs, one that transmits pressure (aftertouch) and one Gate. Each output has a knob to set the amount of CV output. You can plug either into whatever CV input in your modular or hardware synths. Route it to a filter's cutoff, resonance, VCO pitch, or use it to trigger envelopes that modulate different things. Anything you can modulate can be patched with this, and you can hook it up to a mixer or mult and patch multiple things at the same time. If you have a switched mixer, you can drop things in and out. Just one FSR-1 can be surprisingly versatile.

One thing that stands out with Synthwerks' FSR modules is that they are actually pressure sensitive and not capacitive, meaning you don't have to make skin contact with them to work. You can use drum sticks on these - you can even cut out a piece of a mouse pad to make a nice pad for them. It's not needed though, the sensor feels fine and is very responsive. It doesn't act like a simple on/off switch. The harder you press or hit the sensor, the more the modulation is applied. You don't have to over press either. It is extremely sensitive and you can adjust the amount of the effect with the knobs. Of course you can press quickly to get max output instantly.

The FSR-1N takes up little space as you can see and is a great way to fill out any gap in your modular system. You can of course get one module with four sensors with the FSR-4 or large size pads with the FSR-4C. See http://synthwerks.com for more including other controller and utility modules.

Dual Cyndustries Zeroscillator

YouTube Uploaded by dwenius on Mar 27, 2011

"WATCH YOUR EARS AND SPEAKERS. There are big volume jumps and some sounds clip the poor little FlipHD microphone. Please be careful, I'm not sure the YT encoding is going to limit that stuff and clean it up. This is my first patch with this setup, just screwing around. Through zero FM and Wave Folding from a Metalbox-built CGS Wave Multiplier, through a Thomas White LPG clone and with help from a Topp 281 Function Generator and Fonik Attenuverter. 2nd ZO is in LFO mode and sending CV to every interesting input on the other modules. Noisy! Spooky! Fun!"

Dual Zeroscillator, take 2

Uploaded by dwenius on Mar 27, 2011

"WATCH YOUR EARS AND SPEAKERS. Unpredictable volume fluctuations and very low frequencies. YouTube's compression algorithm has NO IDEA what to do with this. I mean, it's supposed to be noisy and weird but...not that much. Similar patch as take 1, except with a faster envelope for the typical pinging FM sounds. No "Buchla bongos", though. Still the first bit of noodli9ng with this little lunchbox of doom. Careful viewers will spot the point where I turn a knob with nothing connected to it. Oops. Helps to use your eyes. Thanks to Cynthia, Mike at Metalbox, Thomas White, Toppobrillo, Fonik, Ken Stone, and Todd Fletcher for helping make these modules possible."

via Muff's:
"First patch with the ZOWI and associated new DIY and custom Wiard format modules. Completely random noisy noodling; watch for the spot in the 2nd video where I turn a knob with nothing attached to it d'oh! I had an hour with nobody in the house and figured I'd provide the promised videos; more to come for sure. CAUTION: particularly in the first video, there are some big volume jumps and a resonant screech or two. Watch your ears and speakers! The resonance on the Thomas White RLPG is no joke!

Basic patch is: ZO sin output -> CGS Wave Multiplier "Folds" section -> RLPG. 2nd ZO is in LFO mode, one pair of quadrature outs goes to folds CV and Offset CV, the Folds CV is also multed to control the LPG freq. 2nd pair of quadrature outs go to the Attack and Decay CV of a cycling 281 envelope. One Attenuverting output is used as an offset to the v/Oct in of the LFO speed ZO, providing crude manual control of event timing smile Slight delay and too much nasty reverb from a Boss RE-20 in the FX loop of the MFOS stereo mixer that's just offscreen in the Euro rig."

Mono-Poly - Ani Tsalagi Svnoyihi

"205 Recordings proudly presents:
205REC-897 Mono-Poly – Ani Tsalagi Svnoyihi
All recordings are self playing patches. No ambient album this time (there is 1 space track) But mainly rythmic tracks with lots of lowpassgate bongo action. about 80% is Malekko (100% sound) but i used some Doepfer mixers, atentiators.. and ofcourse the amazing slope detectors by Ken Stone. There's also a vintage rythmace drummachine featured on some tracks.

The album will "officially" be out April 12, and if you are in the US you will be able to buy a copy from Malignant Records (exclusive distro of all 205 releases in the US). At the moment there is no distribution in the EU/ROW, but I think mono-poly will have some for sale later on."
