SSL/YuSynth Clock Divider Module Works Better With Improved Power Supply
video upload by John L Rice
"I recently finished installing an internal PowerOne PSU to replace the two small external ones I had been using in this system and replaced the DotCom style power harness with an Analog Craftsman acBus distribution board. I had previously moved out the Synthetic Sound Labs / YuSynth clock divider because the The Matrix sequencer from SSL didn’t seem to work with it so I put the SSL V-Gates module in its place, but I missed the playability of the rotary selector switches so I tried it again and now it works! 🥳 Apparently the small MeanWell power bricks could supply enough current or high enough voltage for it to work? 🤷♂️
This was just a quick test to make sure it was working well. Besides the SSL divider and sequencer the other modules used are a Martin Jan Koehler Tidal Modulator (a 5U port of Mutable Instruments Tides), a Noise Engineering Basimilus Iteritas Magnus VCO, and a Digital Utilities module from Free State FX (a 5U port of Ornament and Crime module). Also the case is a modified Synthesizers.com Box11 and the right angle patch cables are from Tendrils Cables. (thanks Dan! 😎🥰)

The Vanishing Night
video upload by davidryle
"Good things happen in pairs sometimes...
Two new Synthetic Sound Labs 1201 TZ-VC Oscillators are the main project center. I sent the lower tuned sine wave (modulator) to the higher tuned (carrier) phase modulation input. I routed the modifier through a vca with a random S&H amount to give it a little life. The modulator was pitch tracked from one of a pair of Matrix Algorithmic Composer modules from SSL. The carrier was pitch stable. The wave of the carrier is a triangle wave through the Grove Audio G294A LPF. It is the final tuned percussive sound trailing at the end with the drone.
The other paired oscillators were the drone duet played by the STG Soundlabs vco's through a Q107 SVF in low pass. The pair of STG VMS sequencers are the pitch source.
The bass part is a trio of Mos-Lab 901's and an SSL 1200 vco. They are low pass filtered with the LWSS M401 Multimode Filter/Resonator. The upper Q960 step sequencer is the pitch source.
The opening synthetic pan drum sound is a Q106 saw wave and the square wave output of the second Matrix module run through the Oakley Ring Modulator and a Q150 LPF. The Q106 is pitch controlled by taking the Matrix cv through a quantizer and then a S&H to limit the cv range.
The second percussive voice was the PWM output of the modulator 1201 through a Mega Ohm Audio MA20 vcf in high pass then a EHX Grand Canyon reverb and finally stereo phase shifters from the Lexicon MX200.
Snare sound is the SSL Woven Spirits (MI Plaits) and the Kick is the Delptronics LDB-2e. Percussive timings are handled by the Moon Modular 563 Trigger Sequencer.
The drone loop arpeggio is the Dove Audio D900 Mu-Seq into a Q106 saw wave to an EHX Canyon pedal in multi-tapped delay mode."

7/9/23 ElectroComp EML 200 (x2) + STG MooSonics + Synthesizers.com + Synthetic Sound Labs + LWSS CGS
video upload by Cfpp0
"Not sure why this video is framed like this. Most of what I am doing is happening out of frame, up at the top left, on the STG MooSonics Vanilla filter, mixer, and vca envelope modules. And probably quite a few clues to remembering this patch lie out of frame to the right of the EML 200s. This was shot before the SSL 1660, so my guess is that the LWSS CGS01 sub oscillator module is producing the little sequence—fed envelopes from the EML or LFO from Synthesizers.com."

Lunartube Habitat w/ New Synthetic Sound Labs 1201 TZ Oscillator
video upload by davidryle
"Digging in the regolith...
The new Synthetic Sound Labs 1201 TZ Oscillator in 5U format.
https://steamsynth.com/shop/moog-unit...
This production is centered around the new VCO with other modules from SSL as well as a version of the TZVCO from The Bridechamber and Ian Fritz, who is the original gangster.
The theme is the idea of a human habitat on the moon within the lunar pits formed from lava tubes. Personally I would rather stay on Earth than live in a cave, but that's just me."
"Our newest 1201 VCO is based on the superb new SSI2130 chip. The 1201 offers all the features of our original Model 1200 with massively improved range, tracking and stability. We’ve added continuous control of pulse width modulation, and separate linear and exponential FM inputs with convenient input attenuators.
Most importantly – the 1201 offers linear Thru-Zero FM (Frequency Modulation) and PM (Phase Modulation). When paired with a secondary oscillator, these modulation types provide extremely rich harmonic textures. Thru-Zero (or TZ) has proven to be difficult to produce in the analog realm prior to the availability of the SSI2130 chip."

Synthetic Sound Labs Announces Soleil String Synth Pod & Modulation Orgy 2.0
Details on each follow. Check with the dealers on the right for availability.
TABLE-TOP MIDI STRING SYNTH POD ANNOUNCED
Inspired by the early vintage synths of the ‘70s such as the Elka Rhapsody and ARP Solina, the Soleil POD is a tiny low-cost Lo-Fi MIDI String Synth table-top box.
Capable of playing 4 paraphonic notes with 2 oscillator ranks per note. Waveforms are continuously variable from thick sawtooth thru variable pulse widths for more reedy sounds. The second rank is detunable for lush pads and honky-tonk riffs.
The Soleil contains built-in modulation / vibrato LFO, the depth of which can be controlled by MIDI. Attack and release envelope times are individually adjustable and share a single VCA making this a “paraphonic” instrument. A gate output jack allows convenient triggering of external effects and synth equipment, and its state is displayed by an LED.
MIDI is input via a 3.5mm TRS Type “A” jack, and responds to keyboard running status as well as pitch bend and modulation. An LED MIDI displays MIDI activity.
MIDI channel defaults to channel 1 but can be easily reset to other channels using a unique sequence from your controller keyboard at power-up, which is retained in non- volatile memory.
A fine tune control allows accurate tuning to other instruments, and an output volume control is provided. MIDI, Gate Out and Audio Out are standard 3.5mm (1/8”) jacks.
Power is supplied from a user provided +8 to +18 VDC 2.1mm coaxial jack, center positive power source, and draws extremely low current.
Quality, solder masked, fiberglass-epoxy printed circuit boards and meticulous hand- crafted assembly assure years of trouble-free service.
Synthetic Sound Labs has been in the analog synthesizer business since 1973. The Soleil Pod is the newest in SSL’s continuing line of outstanding analog synthesizer devices.
Pricing is $179.95 US and is available off-the-shelf from SSL and Distributors Worldwide.
UPDATED LFO MODULE ANNOUNCED
Just over 10 years after the release of its popular original 2260 Modulation Orgy LFO, Synthetic Sound Labs have recently released an updated and improved version.
The new 2261 Modulation Orgy has completely reimagined firmware that includes improvements such as waveform morphing and random wave slew. The new module width is now only 8 HP (half the width of its 16 HP predecessor) and is available with either black or silver faced panels.
DETAILS
The 2261 Modulation Orgy is a unique Low Frequency Oscillator (LFO) that offers unmatched modulation flexibility. It features both manual and external voltage control over LFO Tempo (speed), tempo Multiplier, Waveform and Waveform Distortion.
Eight Waveforms are produced, including Sawtooth, Ramp, Rectangle, Triangle, Sine, Sweep, Lumps and Random with morphing between adjacent waves. Waveforms may be further modified using the Wave Distort controls.
A front panel button or external Sync input allow synchronization to precise multiples of the musical beat permitting timed vibratos, tremolos, and clocking of external sequencers and sample & hold type devices. Multiple 2261s may also be cascaded to provide complex polyrhythmic modulation patterns, which is aided by use of the Clock output jack. The Clock output also serves as a powerful input clock multiplier.
In conjunction with the Multiplier controls, LFO Tempo (frequency) is adjustable from approximately 0.1Hz to about 50Hz in six overlapping tempo ranges.
The external Level CV input responds linearly and is normalled internally to +5V so that with no input, the 2261 outputs are at maximum. This convenient input can frequently save a separate VCA when doing voltage-controlled modulation depth.
A panel LED / push button shows the LFO output rate. Knobs are conveniently placed and top quality 1/8” jacks permit smooth, effortless patching.
Quality, solder masked, fiberglass-epoxy printed circuit boards and meticulous hand- crafted assembly assure years of trouble-free service.
Synthetic Sound Labs has been in the analog synthesizer business since 1973. The 2261 is the newest in SSL’s continuing line of outstanding analog synthesizer modules.
Pricing is $250 US and is available off-the-shelf from SSL and Distributors Worldwide. Silver panel – Model 2261S. Black panel – Model 2261B

Test after moving the Noise Engineering BIM VCO into this folding modular case. I like it!
video upload by John L Rice
"The gate out of the SSL The Matrix sequencer is patched to the SSL/YuSynth clock divider with one output going to the Basimilus Iteritas Magnus and the other two outputs triggering State FX Dual Trigger Processor (5U Mutable Instruments Peaks) envelopes that are modulating the audio out of The Matrix via a Happy Nerding Fun VCF and Grove Audio quad VCA. (the audio out of the Matrix also goes to the quad VCA and its level is just manually controlled) All four outputs of the Martin Jan Koehler Tidal Modulator (5U Mutable Instruments Tides) go to a Moon Modular 525 quandary attenuator and then to various inputs of the Noise Engineering BIM to vary the sound. #modularsynth #sequencer #electronicmusic"

"Call it a stiff swing thing. An alternate take from the version previously posted on 7/22/23 (captioned as 'swing thing') [posted here]. This sequence is the same, but sounds very different because the filter remains more open and isn’t quieting notes as much or fluctuating the focus through dynamics."

8/9/23 .com Q123 (440Hz) SSL 1660 (gate rest) 1310 + LWSS + MooSonics + Zerosum Inertia (oscillate)
video upload by Cfpp0
"Same SSL 1660 sequence (except for the D slider position) as in the previous video, but with the 1660 gate set to rest, so that it deviates from steady 1/8th notes (the SSL 1310 is swinging them into 16ths). The Synthesizers.com Q123 Standards module (which has an oscillator that produces 440Hz to reference for tuning) runs into Zerosum Inertia The Destructor Beam, but self-oscillating and tuned higher than 440Hz. So flipping the 440Hz switch on or off selects either 440Hz or tube feedback and provides two tones to drone against the SSL 1660 sequence."

The Matrix to Vanilla Envelope VCA to Low pass in on CGS35. The soft drone towards the end is when Q123 Standards drops a 440Hz A note into the CGS35 band pass in. Flipping the switch to negative on Standards accentuates the tone and the Matrix CV out wavers it all."

7/31/23 Metasonix RK8 Filterwall + SSL 1660 + MooSonics Vanilla VCA/Envelope + PCM 70 (gated plate)
video upload by Cfpp0
"A maiden voyage into the latest glory hole from Metasonix."
via Metasonix
"The RK8 contains six bandpass filters, which use vacuum tubes. They are simple 'twin T' designs. Each filter is about one octave lower in range than the one to the left—treble on the left, bass on the right.
Each filter may be manually swept with its own separate tuning knob, over approximately one and one-half octaves. Or ALL the filters may be swept together, using either the 'MANUAL TUNE' knob, or the CV input, which overrides the knob when a patch cable is inserted. Although it is capable of some conventional swept-filter effects, the RK8 is more useful as a complex equalization system or for unique special effects.
Resonance is separately adjustable for each filter. Usually the treble filters will resonate strongly and oscillate under some settings. The bass filters might not. It’s a strange monster.
Inputs and outputs are compatible with all Eurorack and other modular synthesizer equipment. The output peak voltage is limited to the supply rails and can’t damage other modules.
Don’t assume you know what you are getting here—the RK8 is unlike anything else ever marketed. Also don’t expect it to track VCOs. Its voltage-to-frequency curve is 'more or less' hertz-per-volt but can’t really be guaranteed. The six vactrols in each RK8 were hand-matched, but can’t be expected to remain matched, or to track together perfectly.
Again, everything about the RK8 is abnormal. It is not perfectly 'clean' and perfectly 'distortionless', and it cannot be made so. Because it uses vacuum tubes.
It is something you have NEVER seen before. It can NOT be compared to any other product, ever made, PERIOD. Do not walk into this with 'preconceptions'.
Specs: 32HP width Eurorack module, with circuits protruding about 1.5″ or 38mm behind panel. The RK8 uses six 5702 subminiature pentodes, all Raytheon US military surplus from the 1980s. Power supply required is about 600 mA after warmup and 1.4 amps when started cold from +12v, and 10 mA from -12v. Low-cost power supplies are NOT recommended. A spare tube is included, although soldering equipment is needed to replace any of the tubes. They are run very conservatively and will last many, many years."

"Metasonix RK8 Filterwall prototype demo - video 1.
Modules used: Hexinverter Mutant BD9, Mutant Snare, WMD Crater and Kraken, Moog DFAM, and some live percussion samples from the 1010 music Bitbox.
This is an un-edited 13 minute session of experimentation with direct audio recording to showcase the tonality of the prototype as it processes these sounds. When audio stops and comes back in that is me bringing up a separate mixer channel of the raw audio unfiltered as a comparison, which is then muted out and the RK8 direct channel is brought back in."
