Landscape Noon 1 Year Review

video upload by Bata

"It's been a little over a year of using the Landscape Fm Noon so I figured I would do a review video. There ends up being not that much reviewing done. I just show how I've been using it lately. It's very hard to remember what does what on this thing. Overall I rate the Noon at like a 1/10 or 8/10 depending on what type of synthesist you are. If the parameters for each channel were able to be CV controlled I would rate it a 9/10. It's very fun but challenging and frustrating at times. I view it as equal parts puzzle, game, and instrument. The passive nature of the machine means that you either need to use a lot of mixer/audio interface channels for the separate outs or deal with the signal robbing and channel bleed that comes with the passive mixing to main outs on the unit. As for the price of the unit I think it's somewhat overpriced as you end up needing a lot of other gear to fully use the thing. You can use it with just a 9V battery or basic CV sequencer but it really shines when used with a considerable amount of other equipment. I wouldn't recommend this to synth beginners or people who are sensitive to abrasive sounds but someone with an open mind for electronic experimentation might find it very fulfilling. Thanks for reading/watching!

Best Ambient Synth Shootout #138: cre8audio West Pest - Song 2

video upload by Christian's Sonic Spaces

"This is the second song recording with the West Pest. It's a monophonic semimodular analog synthesizer based on the Buchla philosophy using a wavefolder to create overtones to the VCO sound.

I used for the recording the following FX pedals:
Behringer Bode Frequency Shifter 1630, Line 6 DL4 MkII, Pigtronix Echolution² Deluxe, GFI System Specular Reverb², OTO Boum.
Depending on the recorded track some FX are deactivated.

The signal went through a Presonus StudioLive 16.0.2 into the PC via USB for recording. To create the complete song I recorded consecutively several stereo tracks. On some tracks Compressor and EQ where added in Cubase 13. The final song was then mastered using iZotope Ozone.

Well, I decided to go back to the basics, but at the same time make something useful for the synth community and do a kind of competition (I like competitions;-). What's my best synth for ambient music :-)"

Stylophone Beat, East Beast, Kawai K1m Jam

video upload by ChrisLody

"Full Disclosure: I occasionally take on freelance work at Dubreq (they make Stylophones) on an hourly rate producing video content. This video wasn't paid for directly but as a result of my work with Dubreq it is marked as Paid Promotion

Right time for a weird jam! I've been ridiculously busy recently with my day job and music related work so can barely justify taking time off to make this (this is product endorsement which is about as close as I can get to time off at the moment 😅), but I risk my channel turning into wall to wall Sonicware news (more of that to come) so I'm trying to find time for a bit of silliness like this!

Dubreq sent me the Stylophone Beat a few weeks back and I've been having some fun with it. For such an inexpensive machine it has surprisingly features. It can play 4 different kits, 4 different bass sound, 4x 32 step patterns, has some realtime playback effects like a filter sweep and pattern length (think stutter mode), patterns can be copied, elements muted etc, the stock sounds are well chosen, really quite good. There are limitations of course, the volume of each sound is fixed, there's no sync capability (although technically the LED flashes at 1ppq so it could be hacked) and the memory is wiped when it's powered down so make sure you record you work. One saving grace in that regard is that it goes into standby quite quickly so this Beat was left on all night with my rhythm programmed in so was still there the next day for me to continue work on. One small caveat is that the drum sequencer supports 16th note resolution but it seems the bass sequencer doesn't, you'll get 8th note recordings. It does support glide though as you may be able to tell from what I've made here. So all in all a fun little machine!

I also bought a Cre8audio East Beast recently and haven't had the chance to use it, so here it is used in the laziest way imaginable with the Stylophone Gen X-1 as a delay effect. It's a very capable little semi modular but I'm not using those features here. I also bought a Kawai K1 which used to belong to former Sonicware staff member Evan Sirchuk, so here's that too playing one of it's presets. That's a really bright sounding bit of kit and I wasn't sure what to use it for at first but it fits in nicely here. I don't even think I've used that Korg NanoKEY2 for anything yet either and I've had that for years!

Anyway, I don't know how I ended making such an odd sounding jam 😁"

Don't Sleep On This Incredibly Affordable Analog Oscillator

video upload by Patchwerks

"In today's stream we are going to take a brief look at the Capt'n BIG-O, an all analog oscillator from Cre8audio.

Capt'n BIG-O is a meticulously crafted module designed for those with a deep appreciation for the raw beauty of analog waveforms. This module offers a pure analog signal path, eschewing chip-based oscillators to deliver a pristine and warm sonic experience.

In a collaborative effort with Pittsburgh Modular Synthesizers, we embarked on a mission to encapsulate the essence of massive analog sound within a voltage-controlled oscillator module. This endeavor was met with initial skepticism, but Pittsburgh Modular eventually recognized the value of our vision.

Key Features of Capt'n BIG-O:
- Pure Analog, Original Design: This module boasts a fully analog signal path, ensuring the authenticity and warmth of your sound.
-Diverse Waveforms: Capt'n BIG-O offers a selection of essential waveforms, including sine, triangle, saw, and square, allowing for versatile sound sculpting.
- Flexible Wave Folding: The wave folder/waveshaper is thoughtfully designed to default to sine but can be patched to any waveform or external source, granting you creative control.
- High-Intensity Drive Circuit: Experience a robust 75x overdriven VCA with a potent 5V output, providing dynamic sonic possibilities.
- Linear and Exponential Frequency Modulation (FM): Explore a range of modulation options with both linear and exponential FM capabilities.
- Hard Sync: Achieve precise synchronization of your waveforms for tight and controlled audio synthesis.
- Pulsewidth Modulation: Fine-tune your wave's pulsewidth to attain nuanced tonal variations.

Capt'n BIG-O is your gateway to the world of analog audio exploration. Immerse yourself in the pure, unadulterated world of analog waveforms and elevate your sound to new heights. It's analog synthesis, redefined.

Musicalizing Brontë: West Pest, Solaria, and More

video upload by the machine in the botanical garden

"Join me on a musical journey through the poignant musicalization of Emily Brontë's poem titled 'Between Distress and Pleasure'. At the heart of this interpretation lies the semi-modular analog synthesizer, West Pest, a creation by cre8audio, breathing life into the sounds that complement this unique experience.

Vocal interpretation is handled by Solaria (Eclipsed Sounds & Dreamtonics), who harmonizes with my electric guitars, a string quartet, percussion, and trombones, all working in tandem with the machine's sequence.

Throughout this journey, you'll be delighted by simple animated depictions of the instruments, enriching the visual experience to complement the music.

This performance is part of my second album, within the project 'The Machine in the Botanical Garden', where we explore the fusion of human creativity with cutting-edge technology, blending the new with the traditional.

I hope you enjoy this musical voyage as much as I did creating it. Feel free to leave your comments and share your thoughts! Your participation is invaluable to me."

Bad Gear - cre8audio West Pest

video upload by AudioPilz

"Welcome to Bad Gear, the show about the world's most hated audio tools. Today we are going to talk about the cre8audio West Pest. Is this affordable semi modular analog synthesizer and hommage to Don Buchla 's West Coast synthesis The Pest? Can it keep up with competitors like the Korg Volca Modular, is it worth it without adding even more Eurorack modules and can it create the strange sounds of the antithesis to Bob Moog 's East Coast synthesis? Should I get the cre8audio East Beast instead?"

East Beast Patching With Bata

video uploads by Bata

"Grabbed the West Pest a few weeks ago and was quite happy with it so decided to try it's sibling as well. Overall I think it's good although the way some of the knobs are scaled is a little peculiar and hard to use. Setting the right amount of vibrato or a subtle attack amount can be quite tricky even for experienced synth rats. The filter, oscillator, and VCA all sound really good though. Audio-rate modulation of the VCO pulse width and vca level sound particularly good on this synth."
