Ben Pringle (The Rentals) Repairs the Pro-One

YouTube via TheRentalsDotCom. Sent my way via Sean.
"a quick "how-to" on fixing a problematic key or two on the Sequential Circuits Pro-One"
Note there is also a j-wire version of the Pro-One. I picked one up for $125 due to a sticky note. I popped it open, bent the j-wire back in place and it was fine.

Update via the comments:
"hmmmm.that's more of a rig than a fix.... next time, use a pencil erases on the back of the membrane and on the metal contact on the PCB, it will actually "fix" it instead of introducing foreign materials like tape that will only make it work temporarily and then probably melt and gum up your control board and make things worse."

  5. While I liked the sound of my Pro-One (bought it as a high school graduation present to myself in 1981), I always had the problem of it breaking down constantly. By the end, the keyboard rubber thingies all disintegrated, the kbd wires had to be cleaned constantly, switches had to be operated by hlding them to the side in just the right way, pots were mysteriously working only part of the time. All on a synthesizer that never left my house. Eventually, I sold it after Hurricane Katrina for $100 so we could pay the rent that month (my job having evaporated after the storm). Anyway, I figured I'd try to get the VST version, because even after all that, I really miss it...

  6. can we stop the name calling, ethnic slurs socio political editorial content character assasination and general anonymous backbiting, matrix? if one of these so called experts wants to weigh in with their undoubtedly perfect OPINION on something as largely irrelevant as j-wire vs. membrane--- i suggest you also do, in fact, exercise your IMHO more reliable editorial ability. i voted against 'nay' when you asked before but either this has got to stop or something. it ruins the experience here for me. thats what admins do...

  7. "consummately vague"....chill out, what are you talking about? I read all the comments, and none fit the description you gave... I simply said you should use a pencil eraser instead of tape, and the other guy just called him an idiot...something I would call anyone trying to put tape in a pro one. we didn't pretend to have "perfect opinions", we just happen to know this "fix" is a bad idea and since this site is all about synthesizers, we both figured we'd make the point that, while potentially amusing to some, the video in question doesn't contain any valid advice for repairing a synth.... I guess you could say it would be good in a pinch, but even then, I would think an eraser would be easier to find than gaffer's tape.

  9. ha. i just came across these comments. at some point on tour i did go looking for pencils. i must have gotten some in a drug store, but they were hell to cut the right amount for the keyboard. it was fun trying though! -bp
