  1. Am I alone in thinking the synth babes tag is derogatory, sexist and unnecessary? That, plus the obligatory 'hot stuff' comments...

After the recent Mostly post, I was going to say I respected Tara Bush because she doesn't feel compelled to take her clothes off for self-promotional reasons. Then I figured I should probably be a bit more diligent about this, so I visited her site.

Nope. She takes her clothes off.

(cue sound of thousands of matrix readers rushing to her site)

  2. That's funny stretta...coming from someone that has an abstract picture of testicles and a penis as an avatar. I think all labeling has good and bad aspects, whether it's describing someone's appearance or the manufacturer of a certain type of synthesizer. Would it be better if we labeled all the posts with pictures of guys "synth hunks" - think of all the men that would be offended if they were labeled a hunk.

  3. LOL. About my avatar

But, yeah, now that I look at it, I can see what you're talking about.

  4. Call me crazy, but I choose to be flattered by the term...I cannot speak for all the other "synth babes", but, in my mind, synth babes are just people that compose all their own music, produce and love synths & machines & music....as far as the nudity (*gasp!!*) I was portraying a character written into one of my songs. I think nudity, as well as violence (if relevant ) has its rightful place, otherwise we'd be left with a very mediocre world, with decent percentage of our greatest movies, pop videos, lyrics etc gone.
But wait...this "synth hunk" idea sounds interesting.....

    PS ...Dear Stretta,
Nice avatar. I loved Rickki Tikki Tavi when I was little.

  5. I think Tara nailed it - it's in how you interpret the tag. If I interpreted it the way Stretta does, I'm sure I would find it offensive as well.

The term "Synth Babe" doesn't have to mean a sexually attractive woman. If you click on the label and scroll through the posts you will see that it doesn't always mean that. There actually are guys in there although not many because the post really has to stand out for that label considering how many guys come up on synth posts. That in itself does make the tag somewhat interesting. I also had posts featuring children labeled with the tag. Now if you are going to interpret the tag offensively in that case then in my book you are a vile human being and are not welcome here. I stopped with the children posts because some a-hole actually questioned it. I was tempted to continue with the label in protest but I realized what ultimately mattered to me was the parent showing the post to their child and saying, "Look! Youa are on the Internet!" followed by checking out the comments. Adult women? I'm not too worried about. To me, removing the label would be the equivalent of telling all women they should watch what they wear and watch their behaviour because someone might interpret it in the wrong way.

For what it's worth, I would love to be labeled a babe. I asked my wife if she would be offended being called a babe, and she said no, she would be flattered. My wife can be rather conservative and I show her everything that goes up. Every now and then she does squirm, but if she's not offended I know I'm ok. I can't define your bar for you, but in my world, my wife and my daughter are my bar.
