No bad for live, but please tell me this guy didn't "treat" his room with egg cartons? The oldest recording myth in the book!

I still use the grey aurelex foam, are these completely outdated?
ReplyDeleteAuralex is better than egg cartons, but not by much. The most important thing is acoustics is Bass Trapping (which Auralex does poorly). They are a marketing/gimmicky company. Think of them as the "Monster Cable" of acoustics.
ReplyDeleteSeriously, the most effective acoustic treatments are imexpensive DIY with Owens Corning 703 panels (do a search for this). Build a wood frame. Use 4" thick (2X2" panels stacked on top of each other) for bass trapping in the corners. Use 2" thick for absorption above/beside your mix position. Maybe some diffusion at the rear. (Diffusor DIY seen here: http://www.pmerecords.com/Diffusor.cfm )
Then simply throw away your Auralex and you're done.
I've always been afraid of the Aurelex foam out-gassing, as you get a burst of "new foam smell" when you set them up in your studio... the slap back did subside, but the bass traps the sell dont do much at all...
ReplyDeleteMy room is incredibly bassy near the back where the sofa is, but normal near where the monitor speakers (Mackie 824's) are positioned... thank god I dont monitor a mix from the sofa!!!
thanks for info, I see the DIY traps use rockwool too, is this as good as the corning panels? -- they have them at home depot? do they out-gas also?

I think you're missing the point. In some cases, brightness and hard reflection are worse in a control room. If you're MEASURING, yes, bass "wobbles" show up as multi-dB changes in room level. But sonically and mentally - bright hard surfaces give a nasty echo to things.
ReplyDeleteEgg crates, sonex, blankets, books - all these things make simple diffusors to fix that problem.
