Mellotron NAMM 2009 part 2
"The classic Mellotron revised and reworked - seems a little bit DIY still though.
And is it really worth having all those tape loops when you can use a sampler?"

Yes it is worth it.

ReplyDeleteYou can never go too far with retro fetishism
There's definitely a market for outdated unreliable technology
Nothing sounds like real tape, just like nothing sounds like real oscillators.
ReplyDeleteExcept that an oscillator is a dynamic sound generator
ReplyDeleteA tape is just the reproduction of a sound
Within a mix, whether you're listening to the tape or the accurate sample of the tape makes little difference
Of course, I don't doubt many "purists" (shudder) will pretend they can make the difference, but that's another story
I love the slap bass in the background. Apparently NAMM is like Guitar Center x 1000000.
ReplyDeleteThere certainly is a difference between using a Mellotron instead of a digital sample. With a real Mellotron, the sound quality varies depending on how firmly you press the individual keys. The sound is also dependent on how you adjust the action screws. Do you need a real Mellotron? It depends on your appreciation (or lack thereof) for her lovely idiosyncrasies.
