  2. come on man. You mean you wouldn't play good money to watch him move sliders on a big stadium tour?

  3. And where's the live part? this video is the best example of why I hated so much electronic music till 1998, when I started to use synths and sequences, incorporated to a real live instrument playing act... I found out you could do way more than push a button and move a slider.

Programming sequences can have a great merit, but it isn't and won't be live no matter how hard anyone is trying to sell it.

"Live mix" would be a better title, and that goes for all those "live act" laptop and dj acts around the world too ;)

  5. Give that man a trip to IKEA, good grief.

Amen to the live part. A certain club trip last October there were three acts of guys with Pioneer CDJ units looking like robots, and one psytrance duo (Imajica) eager to smile and dance and wave arms around behind laptop and Behringer BCR-2000. Somehow, Imajica rocked the most of all acts that night :)

When I finish my concept "album" and take it to the stage, I'll be the guy with the traditional synth and rack setup, Tama Techstar tom pads and improv KP3 beatbox+singing+harmonica segments, sweating more than the entire dancefloor.

  6. The idea of live has many meanings, now if any of you would like to contact me for the notation, I can give you the drum patterns, synth lines and arrangement details. Then if any one person can play this piece of music in the "live" sense that is being argued here, then I would be very interested to watch the video. But as it is an impossible task, then I think I may have to keep the title of "LIVE JAM" on the videos. If you really want to be pedantic, then call it "Micro-bot conducting".

The whole piece of music did not get written by the machines shown here, I conciously programed each unit and then decided it was worth recording and filmed it. I have been doing this for around 20 years and have played in many clubs, squats and fields over this time and can say that when you are banging it out on a 20k rig and distorting the 18" bass drivers with kick drums, then it makes people feel alive.

  7. Another point of view.

With so many electronic musical instruments in one setup, you could class the whole lot as a musical instrument. To play this musical instrument "live" is as rewarding as playing say an acoustic guitar and takes as much or if not more time and dedication to be able to achieve the results that you want.

Techno is a form of music that relies on sequencers and drum machines and would not have the same attitude or precise timing if played on traditional instruments, so the term "live techno" is an art form that many will not understand.

Also if a guitarist uses distortion, wah and delay, would this then be considered to be machine music? I think not!

  8. From the point of view of a traditional instrument musician turned into electronic music:

Hi Arron, lucky for us, machines suck at creating music and at the same time, beat some guys at playing.

You are right, one person can't possibly play live all those nice drum patterns, sequences, etc. hey, it's even hard if not impossible for a lot of bands to perform tied to a sequence and make it sound right, but some have enough talent and practice to do it.

On the other side, you are missing a point, you don't need to perform with traditional instruments to call an act "live", an electric drum kit, synths, guitar or bass equipped with synth driver pickups and for that matter any electronic instrument played in real time instead of being sequenced would cut it, of course you need more than one person but it's more fun and engaging to play live an instrument even if you are trying to play it like a machine... picture a sequenced theremin... nah!

About the guitarist analogy, tweaking knobs and faders is just half of the job, try to sequence a guitar so you can just tweak the dist, wah and delay controls... impossible, right?. I have done it the other way around though, sequencing all the effects changes to focus only on the playing, not as fun as I thought it would be heeehe.

Just for the record, I do like your jams, could be a little more live if you changed patterns by hand on the fly while tweaking knobs and faders... or playing with a modular synth tweaking knobs and changing wires, but then it would be experimental, not techno :)
