MATRIXSYNTH: analog VS digital FM

analog VS digital FM

via Tal:
"a couple of years ago I created a track using 64 instances of Native Instruments' FM7 (it was mainly to practice my FM skills) and now I recreated every sound using my analog synths. (I mainly used DSI Evolver, Prophet '08, Roland Jupiter 6 and SH101).

There's a site that lets you play 2 youtube videos at the same time, with a crossfader for the audio, so I uploaded the two tracks and since their timing is identical, you can switch back and fourth to hear the difference between analog and digital. I just thought that it's something that might be suitable for an item on Matrixsynth... check it out"

Anyone know how to launch the two videos in sync?

  1. Call me crazy but I like the FM 7 sounds better then the analog.... not that the analog sounds bad... just different.

  2. My 2 cents is that the analog mix sounds smoother and more musical to my ears, but that it needs some basic mastering, especially some air...
The digital mix is nice as well but a bit stiff and harsh
    Very interesting experiment

  3. Very cool song!
I love analogue version - but FM if also great - sounds like old PC game. I think it would be very cool to record this song with combination of analogue and real FM or LA synth. Keep on good work )

  4. Thanks for the comments guys :)

Khoral: actually the FM version was done without any DAW mixing or plug ins, only raw synth, while the analog needed lots of EQ, compression and reverb to sound as it does.
I guess that the crispy digital highs make the difference in this case, although they do get trashed quite badly by youtube's codec.

  6. Mayeb I should have been more descriptive in my post. I didn't say/imply that just because it has more high end it sounds better. To me these FM7 sounds have more interesting sonic character. It also depends on what you're listening for...if you're listening for which sound has more deeper range low end sound, then it's usually analog. Each person will have their own opinion, of course.

  7. The digi version sounds rhythmically tighter but my ears prefer the analog versions tones for sure!

    Thanks for the demo.

  8. I really enjoy how they sound mixed together. Bright AND thick. Thanks for the comparison.

  9. In any case, it's a lovely tune with good melody work!

  10. Thanks again.

Actually most people I played it to preferred the FM version, despite it being flatter and thinner. Or maybe because of that...
