HD-1 High Definition Synthesizer Flagship PCM, sampling and Wave Sequencing sound engine We named the HD-1“High Definition” because of its superior sound, starting with Korg’s proprietary low-aliasing sample playback oscillators, full-bandwidth multimode resonant filters, and extraordinarily fast & smooth envelopes and LFOs. Once again, our SSD and Virtual Memory Technology (VMT) gives the HD-1 access to a larger sample set – gigabytes in size – than could be normally stored using internal memory. The HD-1 covers all of the essential sounds in exquisite detail, from orchestral to classic rock to hip-hop, all instantly available. Wave Sequencing First introduced on the Korg WAVESTATION, and used here as part of the HD-1, Wave Sequences play a series of samples over time, creating distinctive rhythmic timbres or smooth, complex evolving sounds. Additionally, step-sequencer modulation outputs allow Wave Sequences to control any modulate-able Program parameter. Ambient Drums The HD-1 sound engine also includes our "Ambient Drums." MS-20EX Legacy Analog Collection Analog modeling sound engine Debuting in 1978, the MS-20 unified a 37-note keyboard with a vertically oriented control panel, and was easily obtainable by those smitten by expensive and gigantic furniture-sized synthesizers. With a thick and solid sound, aggressive filters, and patching that opened up limitless potential for creating sounds, the MS-20's rich personality captivated countless synth freaks. Using Korg’s CMT (Component Modeling Technology) the MS-20EX faithfully reproduces the MS-20 while dramatically expanding its patch panel functionality. Modulate filters with audio-rate oscillators; turn audio inputs into control signals; control all of the original knobs with mod sources including additional envelopes, LFOs, and real-time controllers. It’s a tweaker’s dream, but even without the patch panel, the MS-20EX would make waves with its unique, aggressive tone—due in large part to its signature filters, which are completely different from those in either the AL-1 or the PolysixEX. And of course the KRONOS version is now majorly polyphonic.

PolysixEX Legacy Analog Collection Analog modeling sound engine The Polysix first appeared in 1981, offering six-voice polyphony, program memory, and a surprisingly competitive price tag. With its self-oscillating four-pole filter, smooth analog oscillator and sub-oscillator, plus a lush Chorus/Ensemble effect, the PolysixEX extends the abilities of the original in many creative ways. The strings and pads that were such a major feature of the Polysix will be invaluable when you need the sounds of the early '80s. The classic arpeggiator built into the original Polysix is also provided. We’ve added modulation of every control on the front panel, for a world of sounds impossible on the original. It’s also very well-suited to hands-on control via the KRONOS’ Tone Adjust; with a knob, slider, or switch for almost all of the original Polysix controls. As a bonus, it’s also capable of extremely high polyphony.

MOD-7 Waveshaping VPM Synthesizer VPM/Waveshaping/PCM processing sound engine Combine Variable Phase Modulation (VPM), wave-shaping, ring modulation, samples, and subtractive synthesis, plus a modular patch-panel system, and you have the MOD-7. Exceptionally versatile, it offers everything from classic FM keyboards, bells and basses (including the ability to import sounds from vintage DX synths) to rhythmic soundscapes and sparkling, epic pads. “Vast” sample-mangling capabilities, with incredible flexibility and power, let you create intensely rich processing environments: combine multiple stages of filtering, waveshaping, and ring modulation – even use samples as FM modulators – all patched together however you like.

STR-1 Plucked String Synthesizer Physical modeling sound engine Based on the physical modeling know-how Korg developed over the course of many years, this struck/plucked-string physical modeling sound engine takes advantage of cutting-edge technology. The STR-1 begins with highly playable sounds whose tone responds to your touch in ways that are difficult for a PCM sound engine to replicate. These include acoustic guitar, electric guitar, harpsichord, clavinet, harps, bells, and ethnic instruments. Then the STR-1 goes beyond, allowing the creation of sounds that obey physical laws, but that don’t exist in reality. Play harmonics on a metal bar “plucked” by a piano or sing into a guitar string; with the STR-1, it’s all possible. You can also process samples and live audio input through the physical model—including audio feedback from any of the KRONOS effects! While some of the KRONOS engines look back in time, this a sound engine of the future, one that allows the synthesizer programmer to construct truly new sounds.

  8. Forgive my workstation naivete here, but where does it fall? Between Oasys and M3? Maybe like Oasys if it was launched in 2011 and cut the fat? Why (at least) 3 pretty expensive keyboards with multiple sound generating facilities? I guess its for producers/Rodan Rudess-types only, right?

    Can someone breakdown the Oasys, M3, and Kronos in ONE SENTENCE?
    Not that it matters.

    My workstation is a Yamaha SK-20. Google it. ha.

  12. Oh what a phenomenal yawn fest. Quick somebody call the Boredom Police because a major crime has been committed. Yet another incomprehensible mega synth stuffed to the gills with also ran technology that software can do just as well if not better. Korg, I am amazed but not in the way you'd intended.

  13. Interested in the sonic possibilities, more than a little disappointed in the interface. To paraphrase Bob Moog - isn't this what we agreed, wasn't enough? Going to try and reserve judgment until I play it, but I was really hoping to see the resurrected MS-20 true analog filter, incorporated into a substantial instrument. Have to agree, I'm not seeing anything here that can't already be done with software/controller/Mainstage, and it does look awfully '90s. This has a strong 'more is less' feel to it; but to the positive, 'Rodan Rudess' has just become classic :)

  14. First off, the Prophet VS and the Korg Wavestation are the only two synths capable of wavesequencing. Hell, Korg took the technology over from Sequential prior to the 1991 release of wavestation. To use both that and the NOD 7 onboard a single synth is damn awesome. Korg is trying to bridge the gap between what is hardware and what is software. As a keyboardist latency is still an issue whether core audio, DSI, or ASIO. Most controllers have no sounds of their own any way. So with a Karma 3rd gen, vector synth, MS20 and polysix engines on top of the AL1 and legacy cell engine this will be a beast.

  15. Having used the Oasys live, It is an HD version of an M3 with a hard disk recorder and cd drive on board. The Kronos may not have the cd drive, but what it does have is the capacity to not only reproduce, but layer all the sounds based on each engine together as a combination. 16 Voices to a combi by the way. Those sounds will be rich and with a smooth transition feature the ployphony remains at least 128 voices or higher. This thing may look 90s but there is nothing 90s about it. Hell it even has the wavestation joystick .

  16. Hell I hate taking three interfaces (usb and midi) two controllers, and two laptops to gigs. I have fixed that with my Open Labs Neko XXL. But I still yearn for a quality hardware keyboard. Roland pushed the envelope with Fantom G8. Yamaha has come damn close with the XF6. Korg needed to step its game up from m3. M3 did not boast the same potential as the earlier trinity or tritons. Kronos bridges that gap with an HD1 chip-the Oasys chip. And they now put the best of nine worlds on one board. Awesome.

  17. Another digital toy... So where's the Polytron ? Maybe they're holding it back for Musikmesse in Frankfurt ? Who would have thought that they would release yet another workstation after admitting the concept to the world of consumer keyboards (Microstation) last year ? Every serious synthesist in the world has been screaming ANALOG for a whole year. What are they - deaf ?

  18. Ok, it *does* do wavesequencing; that's cool. And the built in set-list/notes is nice too. One of the things on my list to do before next gig is to buy a Rolodex (do they still make those??) for notes on my various pieces.

  20. @grissom, I guess it depends on your gig, and how you like to work and to create? Based on your comments and needs, it sounds as if this instrument represents a very viable solution for you. The video demo, confirms for me that this is not for me personally. I've been a full-time music & production professional for over 20 years, have never had a single issue with latency as a keyboardist (sorry!) or needed more than one laptop at a time, except perhaps as a redundant backup; again, perhaps our needs are different? By the way, you can also use a PolyEvolver to great effect, for wavesequencing-type stuff ;) And demoing the instrument with a quickly-played distorted guitar patch or Jordan's (for whom I have enormous respect) speedy piano runs, has become kind of meaningless to me after 20 years of the same thing. As far as looking '90s, to be candid it's a turnoff for me personally - it looks cookie-cutter, and aesthetics in a musical instrument are pretty significant to me - but if you like it, please enjoy! I'll stand by my original remarks, I see nothing here (I'll qualify by saying 'useful for me') that can't be accomplished with a controller, MB Pro & Logic/Mainstage. Believe me, I wanted to be excited by this, but I'm simply not. But again, best wishes, enjoy your Kronos and make great music…

  21. The analog section sounds weak. It sounded way to perfect. Even an AN200 sounds more convincing an costs 200.00. Now that they got the flagship product out of the way hopefully they make another real analog toy.

  22. Kudos for Korg in implementing what was already on my Alesis QS 6.1 and K2000, seamless transitions.
    >3000€ for what Mainstage does. I'd rather get a MBP + Mainstage + some CME or master controller with integrated interface and even do something more than sound layering.
    Anyway someone had the hint OASYS wasn't by far a competitive product with its price tag, so here you go with the update. Had I bought an OASYS I'd be furious by now.

  24. Sliders, a joystick, a ribbon, and a touch-screen; 73 weighted keys; sampling, ROMpler, and VA synthesis; quality piano sounds...I'm very excited. I'll wait until I hear it in something other than a low-quality internet video before I judge its sound.

    And I COULD NOT BE HAPPIER that black is back. White and silver synths look like toys.

  26. It's horses for courses, of course. But this thing has a massive piano, multiple synth engines and a shitload of flash sample RAM for your own libraries. Let's not burn them at the stake until we HEAR it. That is the ultimate test. I am concerned that these instruments are getting in the 3,000+ range. That is not what I call an affordable instrument.

    We would expect to see them in the studios of middle aged businessmen who dabble. And of course Rodan the Flying Endorser will have a free one. Or several free ones.

    Nick at SonicState heard it and said it sounded fabulous. I don't care if it is a black slab. We could have some proto-humans dancing around it while discovering how to kill pigs with the leg bone of a zebra while listening to Also Sprach Zarathustra...

  29. So seeing this as just an update to the current lineup, let's pop some initial pros and cons together.


    Finally a great looking case that looks solid to boot. Kinda reminds me of how the Wavestation was put together.

    Gonna have an amazing sound with that type of storage. 8 layered piano, modeling tech, etc...

    Love the keybed itself, but would have liked to see the 73 have the synth action as well. I think Korg's M3 has the best feeling synth action I have ever played.

    Screen is gonna make life easier for us that do everything from one machine.


    The wonderful pad scenario is missing for the Karma technology. Why skimp?

    Hammered action on the 73 model. Yes it gives piano players a more mobile platform, but will those type of people even want that?

    Controls may be a little too small for performers. It obviously has more room for something like the Oasys has.

    Price. Come on!
