THE MISSING LINK 2-way OSC/MIDI demo

YouTube via armatronix | February 16, 2011 |

Testing out OSC-MIDI and MIDI-OSC using the Missing Link connected directly to a Yamaha O1V mixer's MIDI IN and MIDI OUT (no laptop needed).

The iPhone is sending OSC to the Missing Link, which is converting it to MIDI CCs to control the mixer. The reverse happens when I move the mixer's faders.

Now the next time Golden Ears tells you how to run your mix, you can just hand him your phone and let him do it."

  1. Matrix, I like your recent focus on the immense capabilities of the iphone/ipad touch interface for synth control. I agree with you that it will carve out a key role in synthesizer interfaces.

I have to say, though: in my opinon, I really like physical controls more than anything else. touchscreens are certainly a huge improvement over menu/slider and button/slider interfaces, but if I compare it to any good full knobby, especially direct analog like a pro-one or mini, it's 2nd place.

maybe when I buy my ipad later this year I'll change my mind, though ;)

  2. Think supplemental not replacement for synths that are already knob laded. Check out konkreet performer for example. Something like that would only enhance how you can interact with knob laden synths. You can also jump settings which you can't do with knobs. So, enhancement, not replacement. Also you can use it as a remote. This probably wouldn't apply to a Pro-One though as it just supports note on and off over MIDI.

  3. I wholeheartedly agree - nothing beats a good, solid knob or slider or joystick. Physical controls are definitely where it's at IMO.

But for accessing parameters that may be buried under multiple layers of sub-menus in a piece of hardware, or as a replacement for a mouse or laptop touchpad, or even as a nice, big x-y pad to control two parameters, I think you'll find that vortual controls on the iPad make things a lot nicer.
