Quarantine - Justin Hurwitz - cover by Randy George - theremin

"Quarantine. Challenging times. I feel that performers have a responsibility to perform even if live in public is not an option. Music can help us navigate the haze of isolation and uncertainty.

Here is one of the rare works from a major motion picture score in the last few years that prominently features the theremin. Quarantine, composed by Justin Hurwitz, is a track from the film score to First Man, directed by Damien Chazelle, starring Ryan Gosling and Claire Foy.

In case you have been waiting for years to hear what progress I’ve made with the theremin… the wait is over. In upcoming videos I’ll have a lot more technology to share, but I’ll keep it simple for now with this theremin and modeled harp duet.

If you would like to learn more about how the music is the product of years of evolution, please subscribe. I will make an overview video or post it in an article soon.

List of hardware used in the performance and software used during production:

Moog Etherwave Pro (theremin)
Haken ContinuuMini (MPE synth)
Radial Pro D2 (passive DI box)
Presonus Studio 68c (audio interface)
Ableton Live 10 Suite (digital audio workstation)
Z Prism MIDI Merlin (real-time audio to MPE MIDI)
Modartt Pianoteq 6 Stage (modeled harp)
Polyverse Comet (very nice reverb)"
