XpandrLink, a native Mac/Windows editor and DAW plugin for Xpander/Matrix-12 (beta)



This one came in on the xpantastic Oberheim Matrix-12 and Xpander list. Details from the creator follow:

"I'm Jake, a Matrix-12 & Xpander owner and synth repair tech. For the past few months I've been building something that has gotten a lot of use in my studio: XpandrLink, a from-scratch C++/JUCE editor for these synths built using XplorerEditor's protocol and design as reference, with standalone, AU, and VST3 builds for both macOS and Windows. I've been really enjoying having this tool for my own purposes and wanted to share it with the community if anyone else might also find it useful.

First, the part that matters most to me. Like many of you, I've used XplorerEditor for years. It's a big reason these synths are still practical to own and play, and this project only exists because of the groundwork it laid. I started down this road after reading a note more than a year ago in the XplorerEditor README: the developer had no time to add new features but welcomed forks and PRs, and recommended a long-term JUCE port for a more modern cross-platform foundation.

I wanted two things for my own studio: a Mac-native editor, and one that runs as a plugin in my DAW. That second part turned out to be the hard one. Live only handles SysEx through Max for Live, which means Suite or the add-on, and bi-directional flow needs two devices on two separate tracks. XpandrLink sidesteps all of that by opening its own MIDI connection straight to the synth, independent of the DAW's MIDI routing. So I took the challenge and started building. From there I kept iterating, borrowing ideas from other editors and building out patch library management and generative patch creation features.

Before announcing it here, I reached out to the XplorerEditor developer to introduce the project, and appreciated a thoughtful reply. Everything in XpandrLink is GPL-3.0, same as the original, and we plan to stay in touch on protocol and hardware specifics going forward.

What it does:

Full real-time editing of every parameter: all 5 LFOs, 5 envelopes, 3 tracking generators, 4 ramps, the 15-mode filter, and the full 20-slot mod matrix, with true bi-directional sync. Turn a knob on the synth and the editor follows. Edit in the app and the synth updates instantly.


Runs natively on macOS (Apple Silicon and Intel) and Windows, as a standalone app or as an AU/VST3 plugin in your DAW. Record automation or draw it in, and it streams straight to the synth over its own MIDI connection, independent of the DAW's MIDI routing.

A patch librarian: import years of stray .syx files and bank dumps, auto-detect duplicates, audition patches with the arrow keys.

A randomizer with musical-safety guardrails, so a roll never leaves you with silence or a stuck note.

Live tone morphing between two patches, plus a 2-D "Timbre Space" view for navigating and blending patches spatially.

Zero-config MIDI: it auto-detects the synth's input port and device ID, and usually the output too.

Patch safety was a big focus. Every load, audition, and randomizer roll gets redirected to memory slot 99 on the hardware as a scratchpad, so nothing in your actual patch memory (slots 0-98) gets touched unless you explicitly choose to store something.

XpandrLink is currently at v1.0.0-beta.2. I've hardware-tested it extensively on both Xpander and Matrix-12, but I'd appreciate more eyes and ears on it before calling it 1.0, especially from anyone whose setup or workflow differs from mine.
