The built-in AI assistant, voice input, a live connection for external coding agents and phone control reach the public build for the first time. Building by copy and paste still needs no API key.

Artists in DSP released on 10 September the public beta of Amorph 1.0, a free plugin for macOS and Windows that builds audio instruments and effects from a written description. The release brings the built-in AI assistant, voice input, support for external coding agents and phone control to the public build for the first time, after two months of closed testing with the company's Discord community.

Instruments and effects built inside Amorph are called patches. To build one, the user describes it in plain language. Amorph writes the DSP code, generates an interface and compiles it on the track while the session is playing. The result is a working patch with editable source that plays offline and saves with the session.

Artists in DSP builds Amorph on one idea: musicians should be able to make their own tools. Almost every instrument in a studio was designed by someone else and arrived finished. Amorph hands the musician the design step, so the tool becomes part of the work: a sound nobody else has, an effect built for one track, an algorithm tried in an afternoon, and no compiler to set up first. One of the patches in the release, Modular Town, was built by a community member, Bungle Society. It is a working synthesizer drawn as a village: the player scrolls through the town, the filter sits on a factory, the bass synth in a ramen shop, and every knob and sequencer is mounted on a building. It is the kind of instrument no company would have made.

The person has the idea, describes it, listens, changes what is wrong and decides when it sounds right; the assistant proposes each change and the user applies or discards it. What comes out is the creator's: the source is theirs to read and edit, and under the licence the patch is theirs to keep, share or sell. Amorph makes the instrument; the musician makes the music.

Amorph installs as three plugins, Amorph Instrument, Amorph FX and Amorph MIDI, and a user loads, builds and swaps patches inside each one without installing anything new. The release includes more than 40 free patches from the team and the community, ready to play from the Explore tab, each credited to its creator and each open as readable Cmajor source that can be edited and kept.

New in this release

The assistant runs inside the plugin. It reads and edits the code, compiles it and presents the change to apply or discard, in Ask, Plan or Agent mode. It runs on the user's own API key and is labelled beta.
Voice input. Push-to-talk in the assistant, and a prompt bar in Play where the user says the sound they want and the controls move.
External coding agents over MCP. Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code, Claude Desktop and Windsurf can connect to the running plugin and read, edit, compile and test the patch inside the DAW.
Phone control. A QR code in Settings opens the loaded patch's controls on a phone or tablet on the same Wi-Fi network. The audio stays on the computer.
Sharing by link or by file. A link installs the patch from inside Amorph. An exported .amorph file needs no account at either end.
Source locking. A creator can password-encrypt the source so the patch can be played but not read.
No API key required

None of the four routes is required.

Play. The included patches, with no AI involved.
Copy and paste. Amorph packages the description and the technical context into a prompt for any AI chat, including free ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini accounts, and the code is pasted back. No key, no account.
In Amorph. The built-in assistant runs that loop on the user's own key. OpenRouter is recommended; OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini and DeepSeek keys work directly. The user pays the provider, and Artists in DSP takes no cut.
Live via MCP. An external coding agent works from the user's editor. Recommended for heavier builds.
Amorph is free on all four, with no subscription. An account is needed only to share by link.

Adoption

Amorph is used in 145 countries, about 1,300 producers are in the company's Discord, and the plugin holds a 4.9 out of 5 rating on Gumroad.

Beta status and known limitations

The Windows installer is not code-signed. Windows warns on first install; the safe route is More info, then Run anyway. Machines with Smart App Control, or a policy that removes Run anyway, cannot install this beta. The macOS installer is signed.
The public library is curated. Users cannot list their own patches in Explore yet. Sharing is by link and by file.
