"Hardwire Mod by A.S.M.O.
asmo23.wordpress.com
This is a hardwire mod of the Dirty Carter Experimental Sound Generating Instrument, a post card sized hand held touch controlled instrument, designed by John Richards (Dirty Electronics) and Chris Carter ( Throbbing Gristle, Carter Tutti). It was originally produced for a special performance by Carter and the 25 strong Dirty Electronics Ensemble in 2010. Chris’ artwork is etched into the PCB and forms part of the circuit.
The instrument is mounted on a custom built wooden case with aluminium face plate is covered with black leatherette.
On this mod all the touch points are wired up to pots, with rotary switches to select clock range and feedback input, giving more precise control and predictability. The mix tilt switch is disabled and rerouted to a toggle switch. The original speaker is removed and a ¼ audio out socket added. Also added is a low pass filter with resonance and cutoff controls with an LFO for modulation and CV in. At full resonance the filter self oscillates.
The original instrument and additional circuitry are powered from a 9v PP3 battery
The Instrument uses a dual 4-stage shift register. Each register is controlled independently. Two oscillators are used per register: one as a clock, the other as input data that is cascaded through the four stages. The outputs from the stages are mixed together. A fast clock rate produces a crude form of wavetable synthesis, whilst a slow clock rate creates audible pulses and clicks. Sound from both the 4-stage shift registers can be mixed together. Glitchy noise, deep drones and percussive peeps!"

Dirty Electronics Mute Synth Mod by A.S.M.O.

"This is my first hardwired mod of the Dirty Electronics Mute Synth. The Mute Synth was originally commissioned by Mute Records for the Mute Short Circuit weekend at the Roundhouse, London in May 2011. This mod is the precursor to a more extensive mod I later built for Daniel Miller, this version has all the touch panels wired to pots for precise pitch and pulser / sequencer control. The Mute logo is etched into the copper of the Mute synth. Also added is a single LFO with speed and depth controls which can be switched to modulate either of the 2 oscillators or feedback. Whilst not as extensive of my later mod it still packs a punch, I've used it in many of my solo live performances and also with the Dirty Electronics Ensemble, I'm selling it to make space for an even more heavily modded version I'm working on, such is progress :) The pictures and video below [posted here] were taken when I originally built it, I've slightly modified it since, the filter switch has been removed and replaced with an LED to indicate the LFO speed (as can be seen in the main listing photo) and the LFO itself has been tweaked. The copper has also oxidised with use since, so is not as shiny as it is in these pictures. The Soundcloud recording above is as it sounds now.
Signed on the base by me A.S.M.O.

Dirty Carter Hardwire Mod by A.S.M.O.
YouTube Published on Sep 13, 2012 by eddie23a
"The Dirty Carter Electronic Sound Generating Instrument was designed by John Richards (Dirty Electronics) and Chris Carter from legendary Industrial pioneers Throbbing Gristle. It was produced for a special performance by Carter and the 25 strong Dirty Electronics Ensemble in 2010. It was originally designed as a touch controlled instrument with the player's skin resistance completing the circuit. This hard wired modification by A.S.M.O. gives more control and predictability by wiring all to the touch contacts to pots and switches. An additional low pass resonant filter has been added, LFO and an external CV socket for filter modulation. The case is made of stained ply and the front panel is covered with black leatherette."
