MIDIPan improvisation using sounds from Alchemy

video upload by MIDI IN

"Originally inspired by thinking about what sounds certain silent things might make, this turned into a MIDIPan looping exercise and then a more fleshed-out production.

New product reveal: A physical control surface for MIDISID.

video upload by MIDI IN

"Nobody likes menu-diving, right? This is an add-on for MIDISID which gives you physical controls (analogue pots and sliders plus prophet-style buttons) for most of MIDISID's functionality.
This is an expensive thing to build, and I don't know how many to plan to make. Therefore, I'll be running a 'threshold pre-order campaign' over the next couple of weeks.

Walkthrough : creating a chiptune track, rendered by dual SIDs

video upload by MIDI IN

"This week I've made this tune, which I'm very happy with. Rather than just post the music I thought I'd break it down and explain this particular technique for creating this kind of music using my DAW. The music is rendered using two modern replacement SIDs in my MIDISID."

Demonstrating some e-ther Advance features accompanied by MIDIKalimba's looper

video upload by MIDI IN

"The quantisation in e-ther Advance really does make it possible to play more tunefully, particularly when you can see the current note on the display. Here I demonstrate these features using the MIDI output along with a backing provided by MIDIKalimba's looper.

MIDIPan Jam and feature reveals

video upload by MIDI IN

"This feature has been a long time coming. I hope I'm getting it right and that others will find it as useful as I will. In this short video I talk about it and demo it with a little improv."

Using the New Public Domain SIDs in MIDISID

video upload by MIDI IN

"This is the new Public Domain SID or PDSID by Matthias. I hope to be able to make and supply these with MIDISID. In the mean time, they're available direct from him and can easily be fitted.

Music for falling asleep to : 6

video upload by MIDI IN

"This is one of many ideas of this type that I have in progress and it's the first that I feel is ready to use. It has developed from last week's jam using MIDIPan and MIDISID.

I played the marimba part on a keyboard, all other parts are programmed manually.

I've started bat-watching but I haven't seen/heard my first of this year yet. I have enjoyed seeing both our moon and Jupiter in a clear sky though. The mysterioso nature of this piece seems to go well with this image of the moon.

Lie back, close your eyes, let go of the world around you and if you fall asleep them my work is done.

MIDISID enhancements and a Mimijam using MIDIPan with MIDISID

video upload by MIDI IN

"There are some MIDISID enhancements that I'd like to tell you about and demonstrate - improvements to pulse width modulation (PWM) and a visualiser for general MIDI mode. It's an excuse to have a jam using MIDIPan's looper and MIDI output plugged into MIDISID for those sweet sweet SID chip sounds.

Ashoken Farewell again, this time using the new Haxocorder

video upload by MIDI IN

"I've been keeping a vlog on my 'second channel' about building my dream wind instrument, the Haxocorder, based on the open-source Haxophone. I now have a usable Haxocorder although it still needs some refinements,
Here's a link to pt 3 in the series:"

Anubis - Amiga version

video upload by MIDI IN

"The music here was captured directly from the back of the Amiga. For the video, I had trouble with capturing the monitor output and composite looked terrible, so I pointed a camera at the little telly and it seems fine.

The .mod file (actually .med) should play on a variety of players but your mileage may vary. It'll sound best using Octamed Player. It sounds good to me in Hippo, but not so good in Eagle (distorted, for reasons I don't understand). It also plays on modern computers in players such as VLC, but it does seem that that's not respecting the proper volume attenuations that I've set for each instrument.

Discovering Music Mouse by Laurie Spiegel on the Amiga

video upload by MIDI IN

"'Music created by Music Mouse by Laurie Spiegel', I'm obliged to say, as you'll see on the intro screen. I'm very happy to give credit, it's a fun and original musical interface. I've been able to make use of real Amigas, my MIDI adaptor and MIDISID."

"This is new and still a little experimental but I've found that it completely transforms my experience with the pan. The coloured lights make for a visual as well as aural experience."

The tuning of SID chips and modern replacements

video upload by MIDI IN

"An interesting question came up this week about the tuning of SIDs. I'll be adding calibration tuning to MIDISID's menu which will solve any issues and also allow tuning to other non-tunable things, but I've spent the day testing the tuning of real SIDs and replacements, and looking at what affects their tuning and documented all of that here."

A soundscape using MIDISID and MIDIPan

video upload by MIDI IN

"Inspired by my trip to the Ambient Garden, I've made a soundscape from sounds including a bass drone made with the 'bowed glass' preset in MIDISID, 'strings' made using MIDISID's "synth voice" polyphonic sound, one of the audio MIDIPan's built-in tongue-drum sounds and my tube trumpet!"

Sailing the Styx : dual SID chiptune composed in DAW

video upload by MIDI IN

"I decided to use MIDISID in a mode that I don't use so often, to drive the 6 SID voices directly from my DAW with some automation of parameters using CC messages. Since the CC control is hidden unless you've read the manual thoroughly, I've made a little tutorial after the track.
