Modor DR-2 tutorial Part 1: Getting started

video upload by Richard DeHove

"The Modor DR-2 is one of what I consider the 'Big Five' in the drum machine world. There's the DR-2, Perkons, Pulsar-23, Rtym MkII and the Alpha Base.

This is not a sound design video, nor do I go through the many sound models and parameter options, that's for later videos. This one is a guide to the DR-2's basic operations, although of course there's plenty of hits along the way. The intention is to explore the many functions of the DR-2 in an ongoing tutorial series.

I've admired this machine for a couple of years and am excited to have got this one on loan from Modor. So it was very cheeky of me to switch out all the knobs for big black grippy ones from Erica Synths, but, well, it just looked too sweet and clean and my Big Box of Knobs is always looking for opportunities.

Soundwise there is a limiter on the output just to avoid any surprises and my voice is damping the drum machine level whenever I speak, which should explain any volume fluctuations.

Stanford CCRMA open house, day 1

video upload by SynthAddict

The above is a walkthrough of a Stanford CCRMA open house from Thursday the 16th by supporing member SynthAddict. Take a look at what he walks into when he enters the building. A Yamaha GS1 with working voice programmer. The GS1 was the first commercial FM synthesizer released in 1980, three years prior to the DX7. John Chowning, discoverer of FM synthesis performed that night. According to SynthAddict: "The Chowning curated show last night was very eye opening - so much cool electronic music even going back to the 60s and it was digital."

And below :) "Today I got a shot of the Yamaha power synth stack in the lobby, with the best baseball cap on top. 😀"

Update: looks like the stream was here: https://ccrma.stanford.edu/live/. It's not working for me at the moment, but feel free to check and comment if it works for you.

Evaton Technologies Is Moving

via Evaton Technologies

"Evaton Technologies is relocating from Pittsburgh, USA, to Ilha da Madeira, Portugal, in 2024.

Here's what's going on:

We will be relocating to Ilha da Madeira
We've begun the process of tearing down and packing up our home / HQ

We expect to begin the move in July 2024

Evaton Technologies will be closed during the transition

What This Means For Customers:

We will attempt to ship all remaining backorders before we leave. Presently, that consists of a handful of our µCVC Haken Continuum-to-CV converter modules, and some Link case bridge modules.

We are not accepting new orders at this time.

Technical support is still available via email during this time.

We hope to re-open for business in Fall of 2024, but that may be subject to events beyond our control.

What This Means For Future Products:
The future is brighter now than ever!

Once settled in, Russ will no longer have a full-time 'day job'.

This means more time for module development and production.

Proximity to Europe will mean better service for European customers.

Shipments to USA dealers will take a little longer.

There are lots of exciting new designs coming; soon there will be more time available to bring them to you, Evaton's amazing customers!

Muito Obrigado!

That means 'Thanks very much!' in Portuguese. Thank you so much, to all of our customers. Without you, this journey could not have happened. Meeting customers at trade shows, concerts, and conventions has been the highlight of this engineer's life. Looking forward to new adventures!"

5 Things with Univer Inter MIDI-to-CV module from Noise Engineering

2:15 MPE Support
3:04 Chaining

More about Univer Inter: https://bit.ly/42SarJl
Watch the official Univer Inter demo video: [posted here]

Describing Univer Inter as merely a MIDI-to-CV module falls short of its immense potential. It serves as an all-encompassing MIDI-to-any-format converter, elegantly packed into a compact 6 HP unit. Connect to your gear via USB B or TRS MIDI, or use the included adapter to plug straight into those 5-pin DIN connecters we all know and love. Whether you’re looking to map clock, note, CC, CC14, aftertouch, MPE, or something else that MIDI can encode, UI can do it: we built in over 20 settings for each of the 8 outputs.

Want to control a pair of monophonic voices, complete with velocity and aftertouch? No problem. How about a polyphonic setup, with gate and pitch per voice? Easy. Need to synchronize an in-the-rack sequencer with your DAW or a MIDI clock? UI has you covered."

Rhodonea: Radical Futures Performance Piece

video upload by John C.S. Keston

"On Wednesday, May 8, I debuted a performance piece titled Rhodonea at the Radical Futures conference at University College Cork, Ireland. At the concert I had the privilege of sharing the bill with Brian Bridges, Cárthach Ó Nuanáin, Robin Parmar, and Liz Quirke.

Rhodonea is a series of audiovisual etudes performed as a model of how we might collaborate with near future synthetic entities. Software feeds automated, algorithmic, projected visual cues, tempi, and low frequency oscillations to improvising electronic musicians. The compelling visuals, based on Maurer Roses, suggest melodic, harmonic, and percussive gestures that are modulated by data streaming from the generative animations. Throughout the piece artists adapt to the familiar yet unpredictable graphic scores and corresponding signals. The end result is an impression of how humans might interact with AI in a collaborative and experimental way.

I chose to perform Rhodonea as a soloist although it can be performed by an ensemble of up to four musicians. The generative and improvisational aspects mean that every performance is different than the next, but the piece has a consistent signature that leads the music. This includes modulation corresponding to each rhodonea that is translated into MIDI data and fed to parameters that effect the timbre and other aspects of the instruments. I captured the video below the day after the performance, which illustrates the characteristics of the piece.

For this international performance I used four instruments inside Ableton Live 12 to minimize the gear I needed to travel with. The Ableton instruments I used were Drift, two instances of Meld (a macrosynth new in Live 12), and Collision. In the video below you can see how the generative graphics are manipulating the filter in Drift.

System 55 - Sequencer as Waveshaper

video upload by O.Z. Hall

"This video looks at using a sequencer, running at audio rates, as a waveshaper. Some sequencers, like the MOOG 960 have a voltage controlled oscillator for a clock. A keyboard control voltage (or another sequencer) can be used to control the clock. Other sequencers require an external VCO to clock them with a reliable pitch control."
