Hexdrums: First Noodle (No talk, no drive)

video upload by Richard DeHove

"You want easy? Hexdrums is easy. The sounds are whatever the knobs are on. There are no hidden extra sound controls. The sequencer is wonderfully straightforward yet has the options to create long and complex passages on a single pattern.

This is my first pattern with Hexdrums and I created it to learn the options, so it contains a little bit of everything. Voices 1, 3 and 6 run for 24 steps; most of the others are 16 or 64; there's shuffle on voices 3 and 4; and about half the steps on voice 4 have some microtiming. Many voices use the 'play once in 4' or similar settings applied to various steps and I activated the option for those to affect the last time around rather than the first. Various voices also have accents on different steps. I replaced the cymbal samples with my own samples which is what you hear on voices 9 and 10.

I used the individual outs on the back to send the snare to the Echolocator and the low boom sample on voice 9 to the Nightverb. MIDI out on the Hexdrums controls the Echolocator clock. By that stage it was all feeling full so I didn't want to artificially squeeze in the hats so I left them for next time. Many people like to immediately apply loads of drive to the sound. I love drive, saturation, dirt, gain and distortion. But there's none here. Another thing for next time. Likewise only a tiny touch of compression. With me applying 'test amounts' of all these options, usually at random, it's a miracle it sounds as coherent as it does. Even so rolls and hits do appear at odd intervals, the result of the 24 vs 16 step interplay and the 1-in-4 steps.

Not surprisingly then I thought it best to leave the knobs alone and concentrate on muting parts to create this little demo. Obviously it's all a single take and has not been enhanced, edited or remixed in the DAW. Stupidly I had a loose cable going into the Echolocator which created a bit of hum which I did try to eliminate in the DAW.

My one sentence review so far: Hexdrums is incredibly easy to use with loads of effortless thump and a deep sequencer.

Many thanks to my kind patrons who keep this channel ad-free

PlantsSystem-Duos&Prophet-5

video upload by plantssystem

"This video work captures the unpredictable changes in sound that occur when the analog circuits of a Sequential Prophet-5 and a Hikari Instruments Duos are feedback-connected and interfere with each other.
The Prophet-5's rich polyphonic sound stimulates the Duos's sharp circuit response, responding sensitively to even the slightest touches, creating an organic, tense acoustic space.
This experimental work captures, through both sound and video, the moment of feedback, which oscillates between control and rampage.

PlantsSystem-Prophet-5&PolySeq

video upload by plantssystem

"PlantsSystem performed live in the intimate space of a single room using the Prophet-5 and Poly-Seq.

Performer and audience shared the same space, and in a seamless environment, the Prophet-5's rich analog tone and the Poly-Seq's quietly pulsating sequences resonated with each other.

The act of performing itself blended into the living space, resulting in an intimate and immersive performance where the listener could experience the sound-creation process in its entirety.

PlantsSystem-Duos&PolySeq ChaosSync

video upload by plantssystem

"PlantsSystem performed using Hikari Instruments' Duos and Sequential's Poly-Sequencer, linked via ChaosSync.

The multiple sequencers interact and influence each other, generating music through a struggle between regularity and chance. The delicate yet sharp modulations of the Duos and the phrase changes made by the Poly-Sequencer overlap, keeping the development constantly fluid.

This experimental live performance, unique to PlantsSystem, showcases the process in which intention and chance emerge simultaneously."

Press release follows:

Noise Engineering announces Granulita Versio, a granular chord resynthesizer and shimmering reverb.

Contact: kris@noiseengineering.us

Los Angeles, CA — Noise Engineering, known for their innovative platform modules, has released Granulita Versio, a granular chord resynthesizer and shimmering reverb.

Granulita Versio offers a simple solution to a complex modular problem. Chords, while beautiful, are difficult and resource-heavy to patch in a Eurorack system. Granulita solves this by generating harmonies for any input signal using a unique granular process. The Chord and Voice parameters allow the user to choose a chord and the note that follows the input signal.

The unquantized Pitch parameter adds an extra layer of harmonic options via transposition, detuning or vibrato.

For fans of granular processing, the Count and Length parameters will be familiar, Granulita can generate any number of grains from zero to 32, and grains can be 16 milliseconds to four seconds long. A modal trigger input and manual button add to the granular fun: freeze grains, sync their playback to an external clock or tap tempo, or use a trigger sequence to manually fire off grain playback.

No granular module would be complete without some atmospheric effects, so Granulita also adds the simple Verb parameter to add in some space. Below noon, small echoes put a patch in a realistic space – but turn up the parameter to add in shimmering octave overtones and feedback into infinity.

Part of the flexible Versio platform, Granulita will be available as an alternate firmware for all Versio owners, completely free, at the Noise Engineering firmware app. However, Granulita breaks the mold with a limited-edition hardware release: only 100 Granulita Versios with exclusive art will be produced, the perfect purchase for collectors or, perhaps, as a holiday gift for the granular enthusiast in your life.

Granulita Versio’s limited run starts December 11th at https://noiseengineering.us and at retailers globally.

Features
● Turn a monophonic signal into a full chord with ease
● Easily create gentle or ominous timbres from any input
● Modulate between 16 resynthesized chord shapes using the CV-controllable Chord and Voice parameters

● Add subtle atmosphere or shimmering, infinite reverb with the Verb parameter
● Create massive soundscapes or use external triggers to fire or freeze grains
● Play grains forwards, backwards, or in random directions

California's Shortest State Highway! State Route 153 (Gold Country)

video upload by CatSynth TV

"We take a quick ride along 'California's shortest state highway', State Route 153. It runs a half mile in total from a junction with CA 49 in Coloma, California to Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park. The park commemorates the discovery of gold by James W. Marshall at Sutter's Mill in 1848, which sparked the California Gold Rush, and features a large monument and statue of Marshall.

Although CA 153 is labeled as the 'shortest', there are a few routes that are de facto shorter, such as CA 77 in Oakland and CA 275 in Sacramento.

The accompanying music features the following instruments:
iOptigan, with 'Bluegrass Banjo' sound set
Cherry Audio Mercury 8
Arturia Piano V and Stage 73 V
EastWest Fab Four and Stormdrum 2
BFD Drums v3"
