New product reveal: A physical control surface for MIDISID.

video upload by MIDI IN

"Nobody likes menu-diving, right? This is an add-on for MIDISID which gives you physical controls (analogue pots and sliders plus prophet-style buttons) for most of MIDISID's functionality.
This is an expensive thing to build, and I don't know how many to plan to make. Therefore, I'll be running a 'threshold pre-order campaign' over the next couple of weeks.

Walkthrough : creating a chiptune track, rendered by dual SIDs

video upload by MIDI IN

"This week I've made this tune, which I'm very happy with. Rather than just post the music I thought I'd break it down and explain this particular technique for creating this kind of music using my DAW. The music is rendered using two modern replacement SIDs in my MIDISID."

midiphy zetaSID plays "Electric Jesus" by Intensity (C64 ASID)

video upload by midiphy

A masterpiece SID track made by Arman Behdad of Intensity in 2006.

This can also be played back on an original C64:
https://csdb.dk/release/?id=45023

Here, we're using quadchained midiphy zetaSIDs with hardware unison detune to slightly thicken the mix :). The MIDI ASID signal is provided by a midiphy nexusMIDI expander connected to an Elektron TM-1 MIDI Interface.

Visualization support by a tiny six inch Sony PVM 6041QM CRT.

Thanks for watching and listening!
Best regards,
Peter/Hawkeye

Using the New Public Domain SIDs in MIDISID

video upload by MIDI IN

"This is the new Public Domain SID or PDSID by Matthias. I hope to be able to make and supply these with MIDISID. In the mean time, they're available direct from him and can easily be fitted.

X1L3 - ALLEYKAT - DEV - ALL SYSTEMS OK - 8580sid - 3 voice test demo

video upload by X1L3

"ALL SYSTEMS OK ! ! ! !

The last one until it's a module.

Everything is in place. It's time to draw up the boards for it and submit it to fab for a test run 🔥🔥🔥

No denying that it's quite capable of recreating the sound of the C64........

X1L3 - ALLEYKAT - DEV - GOATED - 8580sid - all parameters brought to the front

video upload by X1L3

"Quick control voltage+gate read / register write test before moving on. And a quick look at the module front panel...

Apart from ring/sync on voice A, which i have no room for on the module design, all parameters of the 3 voices of the chip are now broken out to the user interface.

Voice A juggles the tune and drum work. Voice B is hard synced to voice 1 for the gnarly 'pro1' sound. Noise is strobed over pwm on voice 1 for the 'snare' hits.

ALL SYSTEMS GO - As 80s Williams arcade games would have said 🔥🔥🔥

There are likely a few minor bugs in the code that i'll spot as the module comes to life. But all that remains to be coded is the hooking up of some shift registers to get control of the 28 leds.

Given that this is technically a single voice demo. I'm fairly confident this machine will be capable of sounding quite authentic to the Commodore 64 and the world that moved on when it's complete and has some nice compositions made for it 🙂

GOATED ! ! !

PlantsSystem-SIDTRAX

video upload by plantssystem

"Combining the Rebirth RB-338 with SidStation Mod 2.0 (Mods), we've reimagined the classic SID sound for a modern era.

This hybrid track combines a distinctive retro feel with groovy acid lines, creating a chiptune-analog electro mix.

This track, 'SIDTRAX,' combines:

The gritty waveforms characteristic of the SID chip
Rebirth's signature TB-303/TR-808-inspired phrases
The multi-layered, aggressive synth textures provided by the Mods
to create a nostalgic yet dance-floor-friendly worldview."

The tuning of SID chips and modern replacements

video upload by MIDI IN

"An interesting question came up this week about the tuning of SIDs. I'll be adding calibration tuning to MIDISID's menu which will solve any issues and also allow tuning to other non-tunable things, but I've spent the day testing the tuning of real SIDs and replacements, and looking at what affects their tuning and documented all of that here."

X1L3 - ARMALYTE - 8580 SID - 3 voice test

video upload by X1L3

"Progress on the SID chip module i've been working on in my spare time.
8580 SID in circuit.

Took a bit of trial and error making the different write routines needed to do the shared register kinds of things with the filter and stuff. But it's moved on from a single voice proof of concept to an almost fully functioning SID module now.

If you were there when the C64 was a thing, you'll know how good this thing is becoming at pretending to be the chip inside the C64 based on this tune that i knocked up quickly for it. It is pretty much doing what a SID can do in a C64. A nostalgic sound. Especially towards the end where the chip chord trills come in.

The test tune shows the different wave forms and how they sound. It confirms that the absolute ton of continuous data coming in isn't a problem. It shows the ultra fast voice multiplexing to do things like the mellow snare sound after the first four bars, and the not so fast switching in tonal variations later on. It also tells me that the click generated by using the sustain register as a voice volume control is a trivial flaw that can't even be heard here.

Tuning is a bit shabby as i don't have a precision Vref on the breaboard. It's close enough slumming it with the running hot 5v regulator for a proof of concept demo though."

Metropolix Solo Jam with Therapsid, MEGAfm & Meris FX | Hardware Jam

video upload by Bobo makes music

"I put the Metropolix Solo up for sale but wanted to give it some playtime since it’s been a while. Now I’m not so sure I want to let it go… the life of loving music gear can be tough sometimes 😅

In this jam I’m using the Metropolix Solo with the Therapsid and the MEGAfm, plus effects from the Meris LVX and Mercury X."

Sailing the Styx : dual SID chiptune composed in DAW

video upload by MIDI IN

"I decided to use MIDISID in a mode that I don't use so often, to drive the 6 SID voices directly from my DAW with some automation of parameters using CC messages. Since the CC control is hidden unless you've read the manual thoroughly, I've made a little tutorial after the track.

Improvising chiptune music using 2 SIDs and a looper

video upload by MIDI IN

"I realised that I haven't recently tried using the looper in MIDIPan with MIDISID, and that's actually a lot easier now that the new version of MIDISID allows you to plug in a USB MIDI controller. Power and data with a single lead. I chose a slow laid back beat, and used a lot of portamento, or glide. I'm using the Beebop minor scale for some interesting licks."

MIDISID 4 : 'Morpheus' : Demonstration of new features

video upload by MIDI IN

"the SID is the sound chip that was used in the Commodore 64 8-bit home computer, it's a synthesizer on a chip with 3 voices. This has two of those, or modern recreations of, for a total of 6 voices. It has MIDI in so that you can control it from a keyboard, DAW, or anything else that produces MIDI

Elektron Sidstation

via this Reverb listing

"The legendary SID Station is a powerful synth that uses two of the famous SID chips (of Commodore 64 fame) to produce complex and rich sounds that range from what you would expect from chiptunes to more sonically adventurous modular style sounds. A very unique sound to add to the toolkit, for sure!"

Midibox MB6582 Maxed Out with Eight SID 8580's C64 Chips

via this listing, also on Reverb

"Midibox MB6582 Maxed Out with eight SID 8580's C64 chips, MIDI capable. Includes original C64 power adaptor.

Condition is Used and it is DIY. It's maxed out with eight 8580R5 SIDs. They are noisy. Beautiful blue panel from Julian. LED's though not too bright. A nice illuminated fan on the back with the "overdrive" pots. Loaded with latest firmware. Has the clear custom plexi window to protect the LCD. The encoders do tend to "bounce" but from my understanding it's normal, and totally manageable if you don't twist too quickly. Sold as is. Sid heaven! Why build your own when you can buy this one?"
