"This is the very rare MTI Auto Orchestra AO-1 drum machine / bass synth / strings / chords accompaniment unit + bass pedals, volume pedal, stand and cover for the front of the box.
This thing is pretty insane. The Drum machine sound is off the hook!
Here is a video I took of this actual machine - VIDEO. In the video, the unit is connected straight to my iPhone using an iRig adapter with no pre amp or anything in between.
A lil about the MTI AO-1 - It has many different drum presets and each preset button has 2 variations. Each drum voice has its own cancel button (!) so you can choose whatever elements of the beat you want (say just kick drum, kick + snare, cancel the cymbal, cancel conga, etc.) so the combinations are pretty much endless.
Very powerful bass sound. reminiscent of the TB 303. Strings section and chords section.
When no drum preset is chosen, you can play the bass and strings manually using the pedals. When a preset is chosen, the pedals will determine the chord.
The volume pedal is not the original pedal. It is a modified Crybaby pedal. In the original pedal, you were able to switch between major and minor. With this pedal you can only control the volume.
The volume knobs of the different sections can be pulled for constant signal. When they are pulled, the volume pedal no longer controls the volume.
Also included is the original stand and the cover for the box.

The unit is fully functional. It has a little bit of hiss as expected from a 30-40 years old unit."

"This is the MTI Auto Orchestra. The coolest drum machine I have ever seen, and with FULL ACCOMPANIMENT! (Strings, Bass, Chords). This machine works beautifully! You can play the bass manually with a String bass or Synth Bass sound (or both), or it will automatically play simple or complex bass patterns for you! There are also many options for the string and cord accompaniment.

This listing includes the main unit, the stand for the main unit, the bass pedals, and the volume pedal with controls. This one has one small hiccup - that is the strings only come out of the strings output and not the main output as well. I can almost guaranty that the 1/4" switching jack for the strings is dirty. Otherwise, it functions 100%. It is also missing the lid for the main unit, and the previous owner mounted the bass pedals to a piece of mdf to make them sturdier. I left it like that, but you could certainly remove it. There is also some electrical tape on the cable from the bass pedals to the main unit, this looks like minor reinforcement rather than a major repair. Not the prettiest job, but it all looks very solid..."

"First and foremost, the drum machine section of the unit DOES FUNCTION along with the tempo and volume knobs, every rhythm button, the variation switch and all 'break' buttons, allowing you to cancel different drum hits while the rhythm is playing. HOWEVER, there is a hum that drones, whether or not the rhythm is playing, when the 'drum' on/off button is pressed. I am not sure what is causing this hum. It does come from all three outputs (MAIN, BASS and STRINGS). This hum does NOT sound when the BASS, CHORDS or STRINGS on/off buttons are pressed. However, to my knowledge, you need the MTI footboard accessory to use the BASS, CHORDS or STRINGS function. As a sidenote and a warning, the MTI Auto Orchestra 16R accessories (footboard and volume pedal) are NOT compatible with the AO-1. Although, a youtube search will lead to certain homemade electronics guys that can build MTI keyboard accessories..." via the Strangler in the comments of this post.

"Here's an MTI model AO-1 Auto-Orchestra. Back in the day this was intended to be sort of an all purpose accompaniment machine. It included drum beats, plus accompaniments consisting of bass, strings and sort of organ chording. The bass, string and chord tones run from a set of bass foot pedals (similar to a Moog Taurus). The chords play automatically and are pattern synched to the drum beats. The bass notes can either be played fully "manually" with the pedals, or can be set to be sort of semi-arpeggiated, also synched to the drums. There was also a volume pedal that could be selected to control one or a few of the different sounds...

One other thing that I'm not too sure about -- you can see in the pictures below there's a line of switches at the bottom of the machine marked Drums, Chords, Bass and Strings. The last 3 of these are latching toggles that turn the respective sounds on and off. The Drums switch, though, doesn't latch and doesn't seem to do anything that I can determine. It's normally in the "out" position, which should be (according to the standard of the other 3 switches) drums off rather than drums on, but the drums are definitely on. So I don't don't know if it's broken or it's been modified or if that switch is intended to do something I'm not understanding. In any case, you can turn the drums off by pushing the "Start/Stop" button or by turning down (or pushing in) the drum volume control. If anybody is familiar with these machines and knows whether the Drums button is suppose to latch or what it's supposed to do, if you message me I'd love to post any information you might have here.

As far as the bass pedals go, the machine uses a very simple scheme. One of the pins on the keyboard connector is +5 volts, and each of the other pins represents one note. Just connect the 5 volts to whichever note you want to sound. You could wire this up to some yanked organ pedals like I had planned to do, or you could just put a line of momentary stomp box switches on a panel or who knows what else. I bought a male connector for the keyboard port -- it's not pictured here, but I still have it and I'll include it if you want it..."

"It is being listed for parts or repair, please read the auction fully before bidding. No returns on this item. The major issue is that does power on, but I am unable to get any sounds out of it but some noise. I tried all the different outputs and nothing. So without getting any sound I am unable to test the unit any further...
Right above that tempo knob you can see a little jack for plugging in a rhythm module. I've seen a few different versions of this machine, and this is the one with that module jack so if you have or can find any of those rare rhythm cartridges, you can plug it in and access additional rhythms! I do not have any rhythm cartridges, but they do occasionally pop up here on eBay.

There is a sheet stapled to the inside that has some schematics and diagrams on how to calibrate the sounds on the boards. It will certainly come in handy for anyone who picks this up to restore."

MTI 16R Auto Orchestra

via this auction

"The 16R is a rare analog drum machine with a built in bass synthesizer (often compared to a TB-303, though I think the MTI sounds more raw) and chord accompaniment. This unit has the memory expander, providing four times the number of stock rhythms. Check out some of the rhythm names--the odd translations and misspellings provide almost as much entertainment as the sounds that come from the box. As a drum machine, the MTI is nice and flexible; it has cancels and rolls and a volume mixer. Sounds very cool."
