"Poofster's Invention" - (featuring the MFOS Sound Lab)

Published on Nov 29, 2012 by TimeSynthis

"This electronic instrumental piece was played in one live performance, no overdubs.

All analog synthesizers in this piece: (listed in order as used) Analogue Solutions Red Square (playing the 10 step pattern by c/v beginning the piece), MFOS Sound Lab 1 (Lead Synthesizer), Delfy Creations Square Stepper (playing 7:5 permutations in one section), Monotonic Labs U-73 (making the thermin like sounds). Sequencers used are built by Pieruix Master."

Monotonic Labs U-73 and the "Secret Space Time Quartet"

Published on Oct 18, 2012 by TimeSynthis

"A short electronic piece featuring the theremin like sounds of the Monotonic Labs Type- U-73 (sorry not pictured here yet, but will so in future videos), playing over a scored section of heavy electronic makeshift pizzacato strings by an overdriven string section ("these are not even string patches" but parts played on an Ensoniq SD-1). The lo=fi sounds out of the SD-1 were made intentionally..by no means does it represent what the SD-1 sounds like with it's better patches!

'Scene: (In the year 2054) when the soloist U-73 player rehearses for a gig with a bunch of stuffy white shirt stringonauts on a space station'"

The U-73 is being driven by an ESQ-M. It's the raunchy theremin sound you hear throughout the track. The ESQ-M covers the electric harpsichord type sound at :22 that comes in and out through the track. Everything else is the SD-1.

Monotonic Labs TYPE-U73 Synthesizer Oscillator

via this auction
"Type U-73 synthesizer. The synth is the same size as a standard effectes pedal and has simple 1/4" power (in addition to 9V battery) and 1/4" output to your amp, effects board, or mixing board... The synth is pretty interesting and function more like an oscillator with an x and y axis. Turning the knobs creates a theremin-like sound that can be altered and affected as you "play". This thing is great at adding background drones to recordings or cool affects and noise. Add a tremelo and have a cool-sounding drone similar to an old korg. These were made in small quantities and are a great addition to any studio. Perfect for circuit benders and pro studios alike. Here are the manufacturers details:

'There is no input, only an output (line level quarter inch mono). The Type-U73 synthesizer creates low frequency sweeps, areggiated stepped tones, feedback, thermin noises, etc. There are 2 knobs labeled [x] and f[x]. f[x] serves as the rate for the oscillator, and [x] plays off the position of f[x] doing sweeps, stepped tones, etc. Wherever f[x] is set will determine what [x] sounds like. f[x] also serves as pitch control.'"

monotonic labs Type N38 Synthesizer: Sequencer VCO Analog FM PWM Noise

via these auctions
"Overview
The Type-N38 is the next iteration of the monotonic labs N-Series synthesizers. The N38 is a completely self contained musical instrument featuring a 4-step sequencer and a voltage controlled oscillator (VCO). The sequencer features control voltage (CV) dials for each step, a clock/tempo dial, and a step hold actuator. The VCO features Frequency and Pulse Width Modulation (FM/PWM), as well as a HI/LO octave toggle. The N38 output waveform is square wave (or an infinite sum of sine waves) providing an extremely rich harmonic portrayal of the fundamental. The output can be shaped to other waveforms (sine, triangle, etc.) by applying external filtering circuits to the signal path prior to amplification. The result is a unique and compact device enabling artists to add new dimensions to their musical projects.

How it works
Everything begins with the clock rate control – this determines how fast the sequencer changes steps. Each step of the sequencer has a CV setting which drives the VCO (which can really be thought of as a voltage-to-frequency converter). The more voltage applied to the VCO, the higher the output tone. The sequencer provides a means to program the output sequence of tones from the VCO which can sped up or slowed down with the clock control. The Center Frequency control sets the reference tone on the VCO which CV from the sequencer modulates. For example, if the center frequency on the VCO is set to 440 Hz, applying CV data from the sequencer (i.e. setting any CV dial greater than zero) will proportionally increase the tonal frequency of the VCO above 440 Hz. The Pulse Width control sets the duty cycle of the VCO which creates several interesting effects such as stepped tones and high pass filtering. See demonstration below.

Improvements
Although the N38 is very similar to the N37 synthesizer, it has several improvements. Several N37 users have commented that the Center Frequency (or Frequency Modulation) control is too sensitive. To address this we have broken the Center Frequency control into 2 octaves (switchable by the HI/LO octave toggle) allowing finer tuning of the VCO reference tone. We have also added a step hold actuator to the sequencer which acts as a “pause” button. Internal circuitry improvements include a completely new PCB layout, thicker traces, and a new buffered output stage."

Type-N37 Synthesizer: Sequencer Analog VCO Noise FM PWM

via this auction
"The Type-N37 Synthesizer is a unique device for increasing the sonic dimensionality of your musical project. The simple, yet effective combination of a four step sequencer with the Type-U73 voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) produces amazing results. The operation of the device goes as follows: the sequencer counts from 1 to 4, sending a user defined voltage to the VCO on each count (or step), which is in turn converted to musical tone. The output is high impedance designed for a guitar amp for easy integration into your existing setup. The operation is simple and straight forward requiring no complicated patches or prior knowledge of analog synthesizer architecture. Yet it is capable of creating lush sonic textures comparable to esoteric synthesizers that cost many times more. It is a complete musical instrument with a compact foot print that can literally fit in your pocket.

MONOTONIC LABS LR55 Analog Synth Effects

via this auction
"The Type-LR55 Synthesizer contains a 4-step sequencer and a voltage controlled oscillator. The sequencer can be triggered by internal or external clock sources. The format for external clock sources is an analog metronome or “click” signal; however other signals (like electric guitars) can be used to cause crazy effects. The internal clock is manually controlled with a potentiometer with speeds ranging from the very, very slow, to the extremely fast. The voltage controlled oscillator is similar to the Type U73 synthesizer which can be frequency and pulse width modulated. A unique feature of this circuit is the “stepped tones” that are created when the pulse width exceeds the period of the output allowing the user to play several “notes” with minimal manipulation. We offer a one year factory warranty for parts and labor and will ship world wide. The unit is powered by a 9 volt battery (included) which has a very extensive operating life."
