XV5080 Demos by CoolColJ
"At the start is a flanged pad I made yesterday on the Roland XV5080.
It uses 2 different detuned sawtooth on each side to create a PWM tone, and then flanged, with 2nd wheel/breath controller to flange rate
Then I load up raw JP8 string and later sawtooth waves - 2 variants on a single tone. On the XV5080 some waves have an A, B and C variants, some are just stereo versions of each other, at different phases, others are inverted to create PWM effects when detuned.
I dial in some Analog feel function which creates a detune and makes it all nice and stereo - remind me of my Jupiter 8 in dual mode :)
This is done using 1 of the 4 tones in a patch - each tone can hold up to 2 different waves!
So you don't to waste 2 tones to create a stereo effect or detune
Going through the different filter types with some LFO modulation - bliss!
----
At first I didn't quite like the sound of the unit, with the presets and all, but now that I've fiddled with it, it's a keeper me thinks :)
128 voice polyphony, good effects and filters and can load samples for a decent price.
Once my SRX-07 expansion board arrives with more waves and all, it's gonna be even more fun!"
"Loaded a sample that I use to benchmark all my samplers, hardware and software into my XV5080, from a Smartmedia card. Just dropped a wav file into the Roland directory in Windows
and loaded it up on the XV5080
Sounds good, but you only get a 2 octave range on either side of the original key.
Filter is decent, as beefy as the one on my old S-550 at the bottom end, but cleaner, smoother and more refined sounding. And you get way more filter types and can use stereo samples.
Low pass, band pass, high pass and peak - plus in some structures you can use dual filters
Definitely sounds better than the filters in a soft sampler
This 1.5mb sample took 10 seconds to load via Smartmedia - only took 1 second to save on Windows though.... Might be faster via SCSI with a SCSI to Card reader with a 8GB Compact Flash Card
Sounddiver doesn't support the samples you load in unfortunately, well you can't select them from SD. But when I use the Roland XV editor to assign them to a patch, and then have SD request the edit buffer they show up.
So that is one way around it, using both editors togther. I don't like the Roland one much, but it supports everything and is fast so I use it as a remote control of the XV5080 - especially for selecting patches :)
Clip was limited due to the massive volume fluctuations"
"Testing my own drum samples loaded via Smart Media - Recorded via XV5080's digital output
808 kick, sanre and 909 kick, loop and a synthesised kick from Stomper.
Testing out drum samples on the XV5080. I mapped them across the keyboard in a single patch, and the filters get turned on and off. You can use 4 tones/samples in a patch in such a manner, while still retaining the synthesis features.
The 808 kick and snare uses the FXM trick as shown here to add "life" to the static samples
http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/nov03/articles/xvjvmasterclass.htm?session=f9f7e5e0282848d9a0f7cd70cc04cd63
I trimmed the sounds right at the very start of the attack snap, and I can't detect the transient being cut off. A problem with the Roland samplers in the past like the S550 and S760!
The XV5080 engine could make a nice stand alone sampler.... if they still existed...
I wonder how the Fantom compares?"

"My Minimoog sequenced by a modified X0XB0X TB-303 clone, and then run into it's filter and VCA.
Quite interesting sounding - the Moog oscillators still sound like a Moog even after all that :)"

A6 does the sequenced thing, JP8 the weird lead"

Roland MKS80 (rev 5) getting the triple resonator treatment
Roland MKS80 (rev 5) getting the triple resonator treatment by CoolColJ
"Ever since I heard those swirling sounds from on a Korg PS3100 and Orb songs, I've wanted to get that sound.
Today I received my REZ-30 - vactoral triple resonantor filter analog magic!
I don't think anything else can allow you to hold done a steady set of notes
and still enjoy it :)"

Alesis Andromeda - Andro CS pad by CoolColJ
"This time with 2 VCOs, 1 postive saw, and one negative - an old trick from the Minimoog to create a phase cancellation and make it sound like Pulse Width Modulation. Some white noise
12db SEM Low pass filter, and a little Band pass filter into the 24db Moog filter at 12 Khz Then the VCO sine waves mixed in post filter ala Yamaha CS synths"

Roland SH2 and Silent Way VST LFO & v1.6.7 Released
Roland SH2 and Silent Way VST LFO by CoolColJ
"I currently don't have a CV/midi interface
Anyway I came across Silent Way VST CV/Gate/modulation thingie, and decided to give it a shot with my modded Roland SH2.
I had a tech add in VCA and VCF CV inputs10 years ago, but I never got around to testing it :)
The Silent Way site doesn't list the Focusrite Saffire Pro 24 DSP as DC coupled audio interface that will work with it, but from a quick try with the LFO module into my SH2's VCA and VCF CV inputs, it sure works!
Sweet!!! :D
It also just adds onto the SH2's existing modulation, or subtract I guess, if I use negative polarity"
---
I went to grab a link to the Expert Sleepers site for this post and see they posted an update today:
"Silent Way v1.6.7 released
21/04/11 12:17 Filed in: software updates
Silent Way v1.6.7 is released. This version adds an ‘output configuration’ option to the VST versions of the Silent Way Voice Controller plug-in (Mac OS X and Windows), allowing the plug-in’s outputs to be presented to the host as either a 6-channel bus, three stereo busses or six mono busses.
Download now from the downloads page. Note that there is an updated version of the user manual for this release."

Jupiter 8 Dual mode layer noodling
Jupiter 8 Dual mode layer noodling by CoolColJ
"I haven't tried the dual/split modes on the Jupiter 8 much in the 10 years I've owned it! :)
So I decided to try it out today, and man does it sound silky, rich and lush!
Hard to believe it's vintage analog sometimes, it's so refined sounding.
I'm guessing this is what Roland is going for in the Jupiter 80...."

Alesis Andromeda - Osc FilterFM
"I had both oscillators turned off at the mixer, and the filter is up, but no resonance.
But a sound is still made when you route VCO1 to modulate Filter FM.
VCO1 modulated by the Sample and Hold, via a slow random LFO
:O"

MKS-80 processed by Mutine1 VST
"Just trying this free VST out on my Roland MKS-80 rev 5.
Mutine is apparently modelled on a Mutronics Mutator
http://mokafix.chez-alice.fr/vst/Mutine_gb.html
Even though it only has 2 filters and 2 LFOs, it sounds quite a bit like the vactrol triple resonator on the old Korg PS 3100"

Ensoniq SQ-80 poly aftertouch demo
Ensoniq SQ-80 poly aftertouch demo by CoolColJ
"Showing the joys of Polyphonic or Key Aftetouch on the Ensoniq SQ-80 synth.
It really does make it so much better
Gotta love them analog filters :)"
For those not familiar with poly-aftertouch, it allows you to apply aftertouch to an individual key so only that note has the effect while all other notes being played do not. On most synths if you press one key down harder all notes heard will have the effect.

Alesis Andromeda plucked string and wind instrument sounds
Alesis Andromeda plucked string and wind instrument sounds by CoolColJ
"Attempting some Physcial Modelling sounds :)
just some Lexicon chamber reverb to add space
Bare in mind they are very basic - not much modulation going one for expressions etc
But they serve as a nice template for further experimentation
That hard sync sound of the A6 can do a lot - I used it for these patches and some piano emulations
I own a Yamaha VL-1 although I haven't done too much on it
Although I think the analog tone of the Andromeda feels a bit more cosy :D
The click/thump on the string attack is a bit annoying, I can't seem to remove it no matter what I do Slower engine optimiser settings don't help much"
Update via CoolColJ: "Here are the patches in Sysex format
Midiox is a good program to use to send them to the Andromeda
Plucked string and hi wind
http://www.mediafire.com/?i2tb1otqmi1vq
If someone improve on them, please pass on the goods :)"

CoolColJ Alesis Andromeda A6 Roland Samples
I was recently chatting with Mr. Array of Ocean Orbit about the Andromeda A6. I remembered some samples by Co0lColJ that did an amazing job at emulating classic Roland sounds. The A6 has two filters, one modeled on the classic Moog and one modeled on the Oberheim SEM. You might not expect the A6 to be capable of Roland timbres. You can the find samples here. Note all drum sounds are the Andromeda as well.

Moog Minimoog fart around - basslines and stuff
YouTube via CoolColJ
"Just mucking about on my Moog Minimoog analog mono-synth. One of the many old and newer analog synths I have lying around here
This Minimoog is one of the earlier models. Key contacts need cleaning...hence the swooping notes
sorry about the crap audio - the camera's mic doesn't capture bass very well, and the Minimoog has a ton of bass :)
Should have recorded a direct feed... "

x0xb0x
303 DIY clone. Via CoolColJ's the gas station thread started way back on May 28. I swear his threads always seem to last forever. I think his Andromeda A6 thread was the longest running except for maybe the Olde Oberheim Abbey thread. Those were good times, btw. I still wonder what ever happened to Seldom Seen Slim. : )
Title link takes you to the main x0x0b0x site with more pictures and samples. Check out this little diddy.
"The x0xb0x is not just another MIDI-controlled TB-303 clone. x0xb0x is a full reproduction of the original Roland synthesizer, with fully functional sequencer. The sequencer can be programmed just like the original 303 (ok its actually a little easier, we think) and can be used to control other synthesizers via any of its various output formats. 128 banks of track memory and 64 banks of pattern memory are stored in onboard EEPROM, no battery-backup is needed!"
