"Amazing all-analog piece of history! (Pre-MIDI) Drum machine (CR78-ish) and synth-bass (VERY TB303 sounding!) module. Also has a great organ drone and rhythmic piano synth, with separate outputs for each (there are also separate synth waveform outputs). You can bring, in and out, all the different drums and instruments via the front panel, not to mention the ability to tweak the the bass cutoff,res and decay.

This one has the extremely rare, 16r Expansion Memory box, that gives you 4 variations to each preset beat!"

"OK - here's a vintage 1970's drum machine with toms, cymbal, snare and cowbell - lots of presets there from waltz tempo to funky time - variable beat. It comes with a keyboard pedal for organ and piano - and it appears that pedal activates the bass too. There's a lot of things to play with on this and they all work - every button and knob. -- It's missing one button cover on the pedal - a piano note - but it works. -- The volume pedal works but someone has screwed on a piece of wood at the end of it - so it defaults to full volume - when tilted back the volume decreases but not quite all the way to mute - doesn't matter because the start / stop button is on the pedal too and finishes any fade out."

"MTI 16R Auto Orchestra drum machine w foot pedal and foot keyboard. This item has been thoroughly cleaned and tested. Full set of rhythms, settings, expansion card, killer bass & filter and accompaniment voices work great, intermittent clicks with tom sounds, however. Improved with contact cleaning but still occasional. The LED cursor flashes with tempo, but number wavers and does not reflect bpm (I believe this applies to both model MTIs). Foot Keyboard works perfectly. Foot pedal in poor condition, will start/stop rhythms and diminish chords only. All outputs work correctly. This unit has been racked in an enclosed cabinet, free from dust, etc. Solid life left in this rare drum machine!"

"This is so much more than a rhythm machine or an electric drum kit. All analog (pre MIDI) drum machine (think CR78) and synth-bass (think TB303) module! It has a great organ drone and rhythm piano synth, with separate outputs for each - there are also separate synth waveform outputs! One of the coolest instruments I've ever had the pleasure of test playing. It's rackmountable, and includes the bass foot controller, and drum hand controller."

"These are very rare but unfortunately this one is in rough shape cosmetically & functionally. First off, it works when it wants too. The unit is intermittent & takes a little bit of tinkering with each function to get it to work properly. I would say that it is %50 functional as it’s always a gamble to get something out of it though. It will need to be serviced to be a reliable fully functioning unit."

"Early 1980's MTI Auto Orchestra 16R analog synth, percussion machine and rhythm bank in Good Condition. Serial Number: 548 by MTI Technologies, NY, USA This is a complete system with the ADL 100 String Ensemble unit and 2 foot pedals. Unit is fully functional and fully intact except for one missing button cover on the ADL unit. Over the top analog gem with every feature imaginable." Anyone confirm these are analog?

"First and foremost, the drum machine section of the unit DOES FUNCTION along with the tempo and volume knobs, every rhythm button, the variation switch and all 'break' buttons, allowing you to cancel different drum hits while the rhythm is playing. HOWEVER, there is a hum that drones, whether or not the rhythm is playing, when the 'drum' on/off button is pressed. I am not sure what is causing this hum. It does come from all three outputs (MAIN, BASS and STRINGS). This hum does NOT sound when the BASS, CHORDS or STRINGS on/off buttons are pressed. However, to my knowledge, you need the MTI footboard accessory to use the BASS, CHORDS or STRINGS function. As a sidenote and a warning, the MTI Auto Orchestra 16R accessories (footboard and volume pedal) are NOT compatible with the AO-1. Although, a youtube search will lead to certain homemade electronics guys that can build MTI keyboard accessories..." via the Strangler in the comments of this post.

"The 16R is a rare analog drum machine with a built in bass synthesizer (often compared to a TB-303, though I think the MTI sounds more raw) and chord accompaniment. This unit has the memory expander, providing four times the number of stock rhythms. Check out some of the rhythm names--the odd translations and misspellings provide almost as much entertainment as the sounds that come from the box. As a drum machine, the MTI is nice and flexible; it has cancels and rolls and a volume mixer. Sounds very cool."
